Overview

The Review Score of 8.8 (maximum of 10) for Averill House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 10 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Averill House Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.327 for Averill House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (51 Excellents x 5) + (49 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 113 Ratings = 4.327

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.521 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Averill House Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 9.6 positive Reviews (48 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 5 Reviews ÷ 9.6 Target = 0.521

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My mother has been in this care home since September last year. She has previously been in 2 other homes and this one is the best. Although her room and the communal rooms are basic, they are adequate. The general care is usually good. My mother is clean and well dressed and fed.
A criticism is that there are not enough staff to provide stimulation through activities or spending quality time eg. hand holding with Mum and other residents.

Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Averill House Care Home responded to this review on 08 May 2018:

Thank you for your review; we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. Our Wellbeing Co-ordinator arranges activities for the home, providing each Resident with a weekly planner of all forthcoming activities. Your Mother likes to be involved in these activities and is taken in her chair to attend, should she so choose. She also enjoyed our recent Open Day and participated in the sing-along and outdoor activities. Our activities are over when you visit around tea time but please be reassured we do provide one to one pampering regularly. Our care staff pay close attention to the emotional needs of all our Residents, including your Mother, such as holding her hand when she indicates a need for this. Please don’t hesitate to liaise with Home Management should you have any concerns; we are always happy to help

As a relative, I call into the care home on a daily basis, over the past 2 1/2 years my mother has been well looked after and cared for. Staff are polite and understanding and care for the well being of other residents.

My wife has been in the home now for 19 months and I know how she is looked after and I can honestly say she is treated with dignity and respect by all the staff. If me or my family have any problems we can go to any of the staff (I.e. Management and nurses) or any of the carers. I visit nearly every day and have a good relationship with all concerned with my wife. I am very pleased with her care and have no problems. It's not an easy job to look after people with dementia.

I currently have no complaints with the care home. The staff are extremely helpful and approachable. Mum is settling in well with help and support from the carers and the manager.

My mother is in the nursing residential unit and in my view, my mother is well cared for and well looked after. All her needs are catered for and I could not be any happier.

We are generally very pleased with the care my sister is receiving. The only thing is her hearing aid, teeth and glasses can never be found.

HC-One, Careline Team at Averill House Care Home responded to this review on 13 Mar 2017:

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear that you are so pleased with the care your relative is receiving at Averill House. The issue of missing hearing aid, teeth and glasses had not been brought to our attention, however, the home manager and her staff team have been made aware of these concerns and are taking action to ensure they are addressed as a matter of urgency. We encourage relatives to speak to the home manager or person in charge whilst visiting the home if there are any areas of concern so that we can take immediate action.

The staff are all very caring and patient with mum, even though at times she can be very difficult. Averill House care Home is a clean, pleasant environment. It is obvious that the carers who dress mum each day make sure that she looks good. We are happy that mum is being treated with respect and is well fed and looked after.

It was most noticeable on my first visit to Averill House just how peaceful and calm the house really was. These same remarks also apply to the lounge areas where most of the residents appear to spend their time, although it must be said the staff always on duty are very attentive. As well as the lounge areas being so ship-shape and orderly, the bathrooms, corridors, and bedrooms appear to be decorated to a high standard of finish and very well maintained.
The staff are extremely watchful whilst carrying out their duties, but extremely pleasant and courteous in their manner. All in all, a fine care home.
