Very happy with the care my grandad is receiving. He is always dressed nice and clean every day. His room is always spotlessly clean. The entertainment is very good for the residents. All staff are nice and polite and always make us feel at ease with my grandad's care. They always stop for a chat with
us and keep us updated on everything.

My grandma has been in Averill House for 2 years or over. She has settled in and loves her bedroom. She loves her carers whom I feel she has a good relationship with. The deputy manager and her staff take very good care of her; she is well looked after, and what I like is that nothing is too much trouble
if we need support. My grandma has a history with pneumonia and both my mum and I know that the deputy manager and team are on it straight away.

My brother has been a resident at Averill House care for the past few months. He was brought here from hospital. When he arrived at April House Care, he wasn't speaking, walking or eating. The difference with him now is amazing. He's doing really well. This is due to staff looking after him. Including
nurses, carers, managers, even cleaning and kitchen staff. They go the extra mile, very welcoming and understanding. Excellent.

My mum has been a resident here at Averill House for 2 years. She is so settled and she is looking a million dollars at the moment. I visit most days and she always seems comfortable. Her bedroom always looks lovely, her clothes are immaculate. She enjoys the food also. The staff always greet me with
a smile. The deputy manager is excellent, as are the seniors and the carers. All in all I'm very happy how she is cared for so thank you.

My wife was referred to Averill House from the hospital for care and assessment.
The home was comfortable and modern and the rooms were clean and pleasant.
I found the staff very friendly and very approachable concerning my wife's care.
The food was good and the puddings were exceptional! Even though
my wife was only here for a couple of months I feel she received excellent care and service.

I visit multiple times a week to see my grandmother and have done so for several months. I was frightened of my grandmother's placement originally on short notice but I've come to find that Averill House is very pleasant. The staff are all brilliant and friendly. It is clear that there is a genuine
level of care and consideration put into this home by the members of staff. From the moment I walk into the door, I see staff helping residents and interacting. It's heartwarming to see. They interact with visitors just as well. It is clean and tidy and nothing is too much trouble for them if you have a concern or request. Recently a manager has also come who has been absolutely brilliant from the start. So welcoming and friendly that I felt it deserved recognition. I want to thank all staff for all that they do on a daily basis for these residents. It has made me feel so much better for my grandmother and I am able to relax with confidence when I am not around. We want to stay!

First visit to the home yesterday to see our brother and was delighted to see how happy and well he is doing since arriving here. The staff we met are amazing and kind not just to my brother but to all the residents. One staff member was so kind and helpful to my brother and both myself and my sister.

My dear mother was a resident there during which time the standard of care was very poor. The treatment my mother received by the nursing staff was questionable and very dangerous. She administered drugs when it was absolutely not needed. I was attacked by a long-term mental health resident and had
to defend myself, after which I was told that this is the way things are there and to remove my mother if I did not comply and accept it. My mother was left alone for long periods of time unattended many times. I had visited to find my mother dangerously falling out of bed, left in her own excrement for long periods of time, lack of encouragement to eat and drink. No support from management to nursing staff on down for family members. Truth of attacks I suffered had been falsified and lies told to cover their own backs. My mother being denied the proper care and treatment she deserved whilst being there. This led to my mother being admitted to the hospital because of it.

Thank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. We are sorry your experience of the home has not been positive. We take our medication management responsibilities very seriously and medications are only administered in line with the prescribers’ instructions. Some medications are prescribed on an ‘as and when required’ basis which has a written protocol giving clear instructions in relation to need, frequency and dosage and is monitored very closely. Due to the needs of the people living in the home there are times when our ladies and gentlemen may present with behaviours that challenge which can be distressing to witness. We are sorry this caused you upset and that you feel you were not offered the appropriate support following this encounter. All staff undertake training to ensure they are competent and confident to support people when they are distressed. HC-One recognises the importance of offering our clients a healthy and balanced diet and the need to encourage people to eat and drink. Where clients are nursed in bed, staff ensure they receive the support they need in a kind and caring manner. Our wellbeing team helps to ensure our clients have access to the activities on offer, even if this is a quiet chat in their room. The Home Manager operates an open-door policy and spends a lot of time talking with residents and families. We encourage relatives to contact the home to discuss any concerns they may have so that we can support to resolve these.

Very poor communication over the phone during Covid.
They couldn’t even transfer a SIM card from one phone to another. I had to go and change the SIM card myself five days later during Covid.
I have found a letter from when my mum was discharged from hospital to Averill House stating what medications
Mum was on. They failed to give the medication to Mum.
When I visited over Covid to see Mum there was a staff member present throughout. Felt like the visit was being assessed throughout.

Thank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. We apologise you have had cause to raise concern about your Mother’s stay with us. Regarding the sim card issue, a member of staff verbally advised of the difficulty we experienced in replacing it due to a required piece of equipment which we do not have. As we did not want to cause damage to the phone, we asked you to swap the sim over for your Mother. We also offered you the use of our mobile landline phone so that you could continue to have regular contact with your Mum. When your Mother arrived at the home, she had medication as detailed by her hospital discharge form produced by the National Health Service and verified by her GP. We are sorry you feel your Mother was not given the correct medication. If you would like to contact the Home Manager, she will be more than happy to investigate this matter further for you. Due to the stringent guidelines in place at the time of your Mother’s stay, the safest way to monitor guidelines were being followed was to have staff support during visits; we sincerely apologise this made you feel uncomfortable. Our aim throughout the pandemic was and remains that we ensure the highest possible infection control measure to ensure the safety of our residents, visitors and colleagues.

Thank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. I hope you will accept our sincere apology that on the occasional visit you have attended, your Mother has been wearing another person’s clothing. We have conducted a robust wardrobe check for each person living in the home to ensure they have their own clothing labelled and available. Should such an incident occur again, please can you bring this immediately to the attention of the nurse in charge or home management so that it can be resolved why it has occurred and by whose actions.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.571)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.571) out of 10 for Averill House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.733 for Averill House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 105 Ratings = 4.733
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.838 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Averill House Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.938
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
