Birkdale Park is a delightfully converted Edwardian property set within beautifully maintained grounds. Established in 1988 it is only a short walk away from the shops of Lord Street, the trees of Victoria Park or the sands of Southport Beach and Promenade.

The home provides 24 hour care for geriatric, stroke, convalescent and terminally ill patients, including: residential, respite, nursing and advance palliative care.

Through a planned programme of care, in partnership with the service user, Birkdale Park will endeavour to cater for each person's individual needs, ensure freedom of choice, preserve dignity, promote independence, encourage autonomy and, with health and safety taken into consideration, continue care in a setting as near as possible to their normal home environment.

All staff are highly trained and are rigorously selected including a comprehensive police check with the DBS.

My mum has been in Birkdale Park for a few months now, and I must say her care has been really good. The staff are caring and have got to know Mum personally. I can visit anytime and can ask the staff any questions I might have about Mum's care. I would definitely recommend Birkdale Park to anyone looking
for a caring, well-run nursing home.

I would like to take the time to praise the work of and staff at Birkdale Park Nursing Home specifically in relation to the loving care provided to my mum, Sybil.
My mum has been a resident for over 8 years now and the love and attention that she receives is outstanding.

My mother has been a resident at Birkdale Park Nursing Home since February and I am very satisfied with the home. The staff are all friendly and helpful from the ladies at reception on first entering to all the care and domestic staff (the lovely ladies in the kitchen always make us a brew), and we
feel my mum is very well looked after. The nurses are all approachable and very happy to speak to me to discuss any concerns or questions I may have relating to her care and make a point of ringing me to advise of any issues or medical-related points. The entertainment lady does an excellent job and the residents look forward to the fab quiz which goes down well on a Wednesday! My mum really enjoys the opportunity to have a bath as her mobility is extremely limited and loves having her hair done by the excellent hairdressers. One of her highlights is being taken out for a drive in the wheelchair-adapted van or having a walk into town or around the lake. To sum up, I feel she is happy and settled.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time to express your views. Your comments give confidence to those who may be considering moving their loved one into care such as ours. May I thank you so much for mentioning all the departments, I will ensure they are all informed of your views and comments. Thank you again. Yours Jonathan

This is a very well run nursing home with a fabulous team of staff who are all exceptional at their jobs, they really care for their residents (and families) and nothing is ever too much trouble.
I have peace of mind that my dad who has been here since February is in very safe hands and well cared

My partner was discharged to Birkdale Park from hospital following a severe stroke. The staff are excellent, always caring and friendly and happy to answer all my questions. They take great care to find out what his likes and dislikes are in food, drink, music or anything that makes him happy, particularly
as he is currently nonverbal. I feel they make an extra effort as he has this difficulty in communication. The facilities at the home are excellent too and visitors are made very welcome at any time of the day. As a relative I find the link to the Relatives Gateway very informative, I can see when he eats, how much he drinks when he has his medication, if he uses his buzzer and how his night was, all reassuring to know at any time. In my opinion, he is in the best possible place for his current needs.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind heartfelt comments. It is very much appreciated. It is a delight to see you both. It is wonderful to see his improvement. The reception team are fabulous at welcoming our guests and visitors and the system is terrific at keeping relatives informed on their loved ones' welfare in live time. Thank you again Annette for taking the time to express your views. I'll ensure the staff are made aware. Yours Jonathan.

Birkdale Park Nursing Home manages so well to combine great friendly care and kindness with high standards of competence in nursing. Such a combination gave me all the confidence and assurance I needed so badly to recover from acute surgery. The demands of sufficient staffing levels, generosity under
pressure at times of high residents' demands and disciplined doctoring by nursing professionals - they do all this so well in a family feeling.

My aunt arrived here 6 months ago in a very poor state; lost a lot of weight, anxious, depressed and generally very frail. She has put on 7 kg, good food is so important. She is now walking a few steps, with help, and enjoys life. Lots of in home activities and she gets taken out in a wheelchair for
'walks' window shopping, ice cream on the seafront and admiring the flowerbeds. No member of staff falls short. Magnificent!

My mum had been in Birkdale Park in a step-down bed following a fall in her home in January, she was transferred there from Hospital, she was there until July 10th. I found the home to be quite dated although work is in progress updating. The home was very clean and the food very good. I found the staff
to be friendly and caring towards my Mum. Unfortunately, the only downside was the manager who I found very unprofessional and lacking in communication with the family. Someone uncaring who didn't take the time to get to know his residents. Please don't be fooled by his weekly online videos.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeDear Lorraine, many thanks for taking the time to write a review of your Mother’s care at Birkdale Park. I also welcome the 5 Star reviews you have provided for care, food, dignity, cleanliness etc. I agree aspects of the nursing home appear dated. This is not surprising as a converted Victorian dwelling. It is also equipped with the latest facilities and rooms with views onto our landscaped gardens. I fully sympathise that you were upset that we asked you to find another home for your mum but we were unable to effectively manage her behaviours. I must thank you for recognising that I provide a weekly video update to all relatives. Birkdale Park is one of the few care homes in UK that provide this service. Other families comment and value our effective communication so I must apologise if this was not your experience. I do hope your Mum is now settled in her new home. She was a lovely lady and quite a character. It would be lovely to see you if you are passing. Thank you, Jonathan

Since the very first day my mum has been at Birkdale Park, I feel she has been well looked after and professionally cared for by all members of staff - from the reception, the visitors get to the constant care and vigilance displayed by all other staff. I can tell by the improvement in my mum's demeanour
and appearance this has been a constant and has led to her successfully transitioning to another home where there is less need for nursing care. Thank you.

My family member is quite content at Birkdale Park. She likes the routine of what goes on, especially the days she gets visitors. She is a very social person and loves to chat with the staff and residents. The one thing she finds hard is the limit on how many times she is taken out. Usually about one
and a half hours a week. I know time is limited and I suppose everyone wants to go out but this does affect her. At the moment we rely on the care home for this as my husband works nights, and I myself work full time and have my mum to look after who has Parkinson’s disease.
Other than that she is quite happy and realises she is better off and more cared for than if she had stayed at home.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you Gail for your lovely response and thank you for mentioning the number of times she goes out. We have a full activities team who make it their mission to get around all the lovely residents we have staying with us. Once again many thanks for your lovely comments. We will pass these on to all our amazing staff.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.842)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.842) out of 10 for Birkdale Park Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 36 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 36 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.842 for Birkdale Park Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (361 Excellents x 5) + (61 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 425 Ratings = 4.842
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Birkdale Park Nursing Home is based on 36 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 36 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Care Manager Joined: 2016

Jonathan is the Registered Care Manager and eldest son of the owner Mrs Cunningham. Birkdale Park is very special to Jonathan as it is where he grew up as a child and watched the home convert into a nursing home in the mid 1980s. Room 27 is his old bedroom! Jonathan has had a varied career. He spent 16 years in the Army reaching the rank of Major, he was awarded an MBE in 2010 for operational service and now uses all his leadership skills at Birkdale Park leading his amazing care team. He has been awarded multiple awards for services to social care and is a regular voice and face on radio and TV speaking about his passion for elderly care. He loves his team and his role as a registered care manager. He is the continuity over the care home and provides a calm hand of reassurance to staff, residents and relatives. He describes himself as the 'Captian of the ship' as the buck stops with him. All relatives have his personal mobile number so you have fabulous connection with the home and continual reassurance that your loved one is in good hands.
