Birkdale Park is a delightfully converted Edwardian property set within beautifully maintained grounds. Established in 1988 it is only a short walk away from the shops of Lord Street, the trees of Victoria Park or the sands of Southport Beach and Promenade.

The home provides 24 hour care for geriatric, stroke, convalescent and terminally ill patients, including: residential, respite, nursing and advance palliative care.

Through a planned programme of care, in partnership with the service user, Birkdale Park will endeavour to cater for each person's individual needs, ensure freedom of choice, preserve dignity, promote independence, encourage autonomy and, with health and safety taken into consideration, continue care in a setting as near as possible to their normal home environment.

All staff are highly trained and are rigorously selected including a comprehensive police check with the DBS.

Mum seems to be well cared for. All the staff are helpful & friendly. Staff are professional. Always asked if we would like a drink.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience.
It means a great deal to all of us at Birkdale Park to know that you feel your mum is well cared for. Our team works very hard to create a warm, professional and welcoming environment for both residents and their families, so it is lovely to hear that this has been reflected in your visits.
We believe that small gestures, like offering a drink and taking time to chat, help make visits more comfortable and homely. Your feedback will be shared with the team, who will be very encouraged to know their kindness and professionalism are appreciated.
Thank you again for your support and trust in us to care for your mum. It is truly a privilege to be part of her care.
Warmest regards,

Mum entered her new home here in Birkdale Park on October 23rd. It was her decision and she embraced everything you need to offer. Mum was becoming more isolated at home, yes she saw family but friendships were few. Very soon she became an active member of the 'Blue Slipper Gang' meeting in the lounge
to enjoy craft, make shortbread and sing and dance with the very full programme of events. Though her stay was relatively short, her life ended with a wonderful quality of care she would never experience anywhere else. I can't thank you enough.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you for sharing such kind words. We're grateful your mum chose to make Birkdale Park her home, and it was a privilege to support her. We're so pleased she found friendship, purpose, and joy in our activities and community. Although her time with us was short, we are honoured to have been part of her journey. Thank you for your trust and kind words. Take care and love to the family. Yours Jonathan

My time here has been better than I ever deemed possible. It could not have been any better had I resided in a five star hotel. My family and I are very greatfull. I cannot recommend highly enough. All of the staff are amazing, so caring and thoughtful as well as ultimate professionals. They cared for my dad for a year. My mum pretty much visited him every day and she was always welcomed and treated as one of the Birkdale Park family. If you are looking for somewhere
for your loved one you would be hard pushed to find a better place. You can be reassured they will be in the best of hands and treated with the utmost care and respect.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind and generous words. It was a true privilege to care for your dad during his time with us, and we were incredibly fond of him. He brought warmth and character to our home, and we all genuinely loved looking after him. Your mum, our beloved Home Matron - became such an integral part of daily life at Birkdale Park. Her presence, compassion, and unwavering love for your dad touched all of us, and we always looked forward to welcoming her each day. She will always be part of the Birkdale Park family. Knowing that you felt your dad was safe, respected, and cared for with dignity means the world to us. It's families like yours that remind us why we do what we do. Thank you again for your trust, and for sharing such a beautiful reflection. Thank you again for taking the time to write your thoughts and feelings. I will inform the staff of your lovely words. This care home is excellent in the care that it provides. Being an old building with extensions, the room facilities are not perfect but the care of the residents far out weighs any negatives in the building. Cleanliness is excellent. Food seems very good and my step mother doesn't complain. Although
she is not keen to participate in activities much they do provide a very varied programme. Staff are excellent and most friendly and welcoming. Management are keen to learn and improve if relatives have any suggestions to offer.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeThank you for your kind review of Birkdale Park Nursing Home. While our building has traditional charm, we ensure it remains warm, homely, and comfortable, complemented by our modern wing. Our outstanding staff go above and beyond to create a welcoming environment, and we're pleased their dedication has stood out. Cleanliness and food quality are priorities, and it's great to hear your stepmother is happy. We offer a varied activities programme, including live music, guest speakers, and school visits, though participation is always a personal choice. Very please with the nursing home helpfull and approachable staff - outstanding to have 2 RGN on site at all times really needed.
Reply from Jonathan Cunningham, Registered Manager at Birkdale Park Nursing HomeDear Dee, Many thanks for your kind comments and review. We have a wonderful team at Birkdale Park, and ensuring that we have two nurses on duty-especially during the day-is a key aspect of our care delivery. In addition, during the day, we have seven carers on shift. We seldom use agency staff, as we prioritise having excellent senior care staff to maintain a high standard of care throughout the day. We are truly honoured to look after these wonderful people at such a vulnerable time in their lives. We also take great pleasure in supporting their families, getting to know them, and ensuring they feel very much a part of the care process. Once again, a huge thank you for taking the time to leave your comments-reviews like yours are invaluable to potential residents and their families. Take care, and many thanks again

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.871)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.871) out of 10 for Birkdale Park Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 35 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.871 for Birkdale Park Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (358 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 410 Ratings = 4.871
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Birkdale Park Nursing Home is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4

Jonathan Cunningham

Job Title: Registered Care Manager Joined: 2016

Jonathan is the Registered Care Manager and eldest son of the owner Mrs Cunningham. Birkdale Park is very special to Jonathan as it is where he grew up as a child and watched the home convert into a nursing home in the mid 1980s. Room 27 is his old bedroom! Jonathan has had a varied career. He spent 16 years in the Army reaching the rank of Major, he was awarded an MBE in 2010 for operational service and now uses all his leadership skills at Birkdale Park leading his amazing care team. He has been awarded multiple awards for services to social care and is a regular voice and face on radio and TV speaking about his passion for elderly care. He loves his team and his role as a registered care manager. He is the continuity over the care home and provides a calm hand of reassurance to staff, residents and relatives. He describes himself as the 'Captian of the ship' as the buck stops with him. All relatives have his personal mobile number so you have fabulous connection with the home and continual reassurance that your loved one is in good hands.
