Dearnevale, rated outstanding by the CQC in March 2020, is a friendly 40-bed complex needs care home in Grimethorpe, Barnsley, which supports people living with complex physical disabilities, neuro-disabilities, high dependency nursing needs and long term conditions.

The home also has a four-bed OneCare service which provides specialist nursing care in a domestic living environment, ideal for those who benefit from living alone.

Dearnevale is part of Exemplar Health Care, a specialist care provider for adults living with complex and high acuity needs.

The team at Dearnevale includes Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Therapy Assistants and Life Skills/Activities Coordinators. They provide person-centred care and rehabilitation that supports people on their journey from being in hospital to living in the community, as well as longer-term support for those living with degenerative or life-limiting illnesses.

The care at Dearnevale focuses on supporting people to live as fulfilled lives as possible by maximising their independence and building their everyday living skills.

Dearnevale has 40 large bedrooms, each with an en-suite, across four units. The home also has communal dining and living spaces, as well as a cinema room, sensory room, therapy kitchen, physiotherapy room and a large accessible garden.

The home also has a OneCare service which includes two dual occupancy houses over the road from the main come. It’s ideal for adults living with complex needs, and whose needs require that they live alone or in a low stimulus environment.

After my mum's journey through her appalling and disgusting care home, mum is now in Dearnvale Grimethorpe, very settled, care-free and loved with dignity and respect. We can now sleep at night with rest.

Since my mum left her family home, she has she has been treated with a lack of respect from a number of care homes, and hospitals, which I will not discuss on this form:- Dearnevale Grimethorpe, my mum's last home is 100% and cares for my mum's needs. She is cared for and loved by all workers, and
mum is settled, beautifully, and has made lovely friends; nothing is too much to ask for. My mums family are very welcome.

Visit quite often to see my father-in-law on any basis and can categorically say we are truly overwhelmed with the care that's provided. The staff are second to none and deserve a commendation for their skills and politeness towards him and his family. The home is very clean and all times and pleasant
odour too. A huge thank you to be given to each individual working at Dearnevale.

My husband has been in Dearnevale for 7 + years and from the moment he came he has thrived. He settled so well and slept in a bed for the first time in 3 years. So relaxed, this is down to the hard work, dedication and love from the staff. They treat everyone with dignity, love and respect its, not
a care home its a home full of family. They know my husband inside and out. I am so thankful for the love and care they show him and myself. He has been poorly lately and they have gone above and beyond. Excellent doesn't due them justice. They are "Angels"

Dearnvale is just a fantastic place for my daughter, the staff are amazing and nothing is too much. My daughter is so happy at Dearnevale and with all the attention and care she receives I am not surprised. The care she receives is not just her personal care but she gets pampered and is always doing

My daughter has been a resident at Dearneval for 2 years and has been happy here. The staff are very compassionate towards her and all her needs are met to a high standard. We as a family are made welcome, and the home accommodated her 3 children to have 'tea ' with mum. All the staff are approachable
and friendly. She has recently moved rooms to one that is better suited for her - after we were asked if this would be better for her.

On visits to Dearnevale you are welcomed as soon as you approach the doors until you leave. All the facilities available for use are fantastic. All the staff I have much appreciation for all they do for my son and all who reside at Dearnevale. All staff are really helpful and welcoming. Everything is
kept so clean and tidy it's always a pleasure to visit not only my son but to see the staff too.
Dearnvale is a wonderful facility I would recommend to anyone.

My cousin is thriving living at Dearnevale. He loves it, he is very settled and the care he receives is outstanding. The staff are amazing and treat my cousin with care and dignity. Unfortunately, we cannot get to visit as much as we would like but when we do visit we are made to feel very welcome by

Excellent care given to my relative, he has progressed physically and mentally and his quality of life has improved significantly. Due to Covid, family have had only minimal contact and his development is down to the excellent care given to meet his diverse, individual needs.

Hi, I’m Helen and I’m the Registered Manager at Dearnevale in Grimethorpe, Barnsley.


I qualified as a Nurse in 1986 after completing my training at the Sheffield School of Nursing. My ambition from the age of three was always to be a Nurse, and I’m so proud that I achieved it!


After qualifying, I worked at Lodge Moor Hospital in the infectious disease unit, and then in general medicine before joining the British Army and serving in the Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps.


Following my time in the Army, I worked for the Ministry of Defence in Germany.


When I returned to England, I started working in elderly care and general rehabilitation, including in a specialist stroke rehabilitation unit.


I joined Dearnevale, part of Exemplar Health Care, in February 2008 working as a Nurse.


In the summer of 2008, I became Unit Manager in Darbyshire Unit at the home, and in 2010, I became Clinical Nurse Manager.


Five years later I moved into the Home Manager role. I’ve loved that my whole career with Exemplar Health Care has been spent at Dearnevale – it’s my second home and family!
