Following a fall at home, my mother was admitted to the Hampton Wing and will likely be staying for a few weeks while she recovers sufficient strength to move back home. During her stay the staff have been absolutely brilliant, yesterday was mum's 100th Birthday and Gemma and her team made sure it was a memorable day!!!!! The arranged party was just what mum needed, and the singer they hired actually got mum singing and toe tapping!! Can't thank Gemma and her team enough for helping mum through her recovery. Mum feels comfortable and safe at Athorpe, however, her ultimate goal is to return to the home she has lived in for over 70 years.

We couldn't be happier with the care my nan has received at this care home. She has dementia, and it gives our family great peace of mind knowing she is safe, well looked after, and treated with kindness and respect every day. The staff are absolutely brilliant-always welcoming, friendly, and incredibly helpful. They genuinely care about the residents and are always happy to answer any questions or offer support. The food is lovely, with a good variety of meals, and the rooms are always spotlessly clean and tidy. The home has a warm, caring atmosphere that makes it feel like a real home. We would highly recommend this care home to anyone looking for high-quality care for a loved one. Thank you to all the wonderful staff for everything you do.

Moving a loved one into a care home is a heart wrenching process. The staff at this care home are so lovely, from the moment we first visited, they really cared for us all through the process.
The staff took the time to get to know my nan, ensuring her needs, preferences, and routines are respected.
They allowed us to personalise her bedroom, which has really helped my nan settle into a new environment, surrounded by her home comforts.
The team are always responsive and attentive, addressing any concerns or changing needs promptly and with genuine compassion.
Communication has been excellent, providing reassurance that my Nan is receiving the highest standard of care.
There is a great variety of nutritious and appetising meals to suit different tastes and dietary requirements.
The staff always encourage residents to get involved in social activities and the communal spaces are lovely.

It's comforting to know my nan is safe and receiving quality care from lovely people.

Clean and tidy care home. My auntie feels safe here. The receptionist is a breath of fresh air, always welcoming and friendly. The unit manager and carers are very responsive and any concerns I have raised have been dealt with efficiently and effectively. The deputy home manger is also friendly and responsive. I would have given 5 stars had the home manager been more communicative and actually spoke when you entered the home.

Unfortunately my lovely Dad ended up on Balmoral unit after a fall. He stayed there for 6 weeks and he seemed happy. He is now on Clarence unit permanently and appears to be quite settled and we feel that have made the right decision.

I have 2 gripes

1. The phone system at the weekend is dire. You cannot get through at all. I have sent an email to the deputy manager of the home stating my dissatisfaction over a week ago and still not received a response. this in my opinion is unacceptable. As you can imagine it's extremely frustrating not to be able to find out how my Dad is.

2. More importantly there is a distinct lack of staff most of the time. For example my Dad needed the toilet and there was no one available to take him, this happens regularly. I have had to go and look for members of staff. This is extremely worrying as he is very frail and prone to falls.

On a positive note Michelle the receptionist is very helpful and polite.

Mum was made to feel "at home" from the moment that she arrived. She settled in well and with the support and care of the team there has thrived. Everyone refers to Mum by her name and all seem to know her personality well, which is great to see. The fact that we are also known and greeted by name too, just makes it feel like a lovely place to be. The care is good and our Mum feels safe and happy in the environment. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Athorpe Lodge.

My mum has been at Athorpe for two and a half years after a short hospital stay. She really enjoys being part of the Athorpe family and has established lots of positive relationsships with both staff and residents alike.
She is very well cared for and as her needs change her care adapts accordingly. As her daughter I have peace of mind that she is happy and well cared for and as a family we get to enjoy quality family time with her.
Athorpe is a very welcoming environment from the minute you enter reception and are met with a friendly smile, to the amazing carers, cleaners, cooks and office staff.

As a family we are very happy we chose Athorpe for our mum.

Making the decision to put my darling father into long time care has been the hardest thing I've had to do. But Athorpe Lodge have been incredibly supportive and kind! My dad loves it here. The meals are delicious, they encourage family participation at every turn. I've been able to eat with dad, making a difference to his appetite. The food is perfection and healthy, favourite snacks are encouraged, tea/coffee/beverages on tap.

But the staff..you are incredible! So caring, you're on hand at the drop of a hat. Nothing is too much trouble. Staff levels are excellent! Huge special mentions to Louise, Sam, Jo and Michelle on reception who've been my support over the last few days! I'm eternally grateful, but above all else, I know my dad is safe, happy and in the best of hands. Thank you so very much!! I'm not over exaggerating when I say it's like a huge family!

18 months ago, we spent a long time looking at, and visiting, many care homes for Mum and Dad. We are so glad that we chose Athorpe lodge. Right from the start, the welcome that they received when we moved them in was so genuine and made them feel instantly at home. The care home bought them a double bed so they could continue to be together day and night and they had a room decorated as a private lounge for them. Nothing felt too much trouble.

Sadly, Dad died 6 weeks after moving in, but the staff at the home were incredibly kind and caring to all of us as a family. Mum has continued living happily at Athorpe lodge since then and and it is lovely that the staff there continue to chat with Mum about Dad. The food is good and plentiful and Mum also enjoys helping herself to the snacks and fruit whenever she fancies anything outside mealtimes. The staff are dedicated and have a lovely manner with all the clients. It is such a relief to know that Mum is so safe and well cared for.

Lovely care home. Person centred care. Fantastic staff. My mum took time to settle the staff are so patient and kind. Ensure residents socialise and maintain daily routines. Our experience as a family with a relative in Athorpe Lodge was a very positive one. I don't think dad would have come home if he hadn't had the care and physiotherapy that he got at Athorpe Lodge. We cannot thank the staff enough for all they did for him, and that goes for the cleaners, the carers, the physios and everyone in between; they were all amazing. My parents are both 92, and although my mom wasn't a patient, the respect and care they were both shown was second to none. I would fully recommend Athorpe to anyone who needs a safe place for their parent or relative to be looked after. I can't think of a negative word to say about my dad's experience in Athorpe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My mum was in Athorpe Lodge for just over 3 months and in that time she received excellent care.
The staff are caring, and compassionate and go above and beyond to help.
As well as supporting my mum the staff were a huge support to me too.
The food was excellent, and the bedrooms were of a high standard and decorated beautifully.
Sadly my mum passed away on the 22nd of November 2023, but I know she was very happy at Athorpe.
I just want to say a huge thank you to 6 members of staff in particular and the other staff for looking after my mum and me.
I will be forever grateful for everything you did for my mum and dad.

I would recommend Athorpe 100%.

Sara LeighJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2026

My name is Sara Leigh, the newly appointed Home Manager at Athorpe Lodge

Being a manager matters because I have the privilege of looking after two incredible groups of people every single day—our residents and our staff.

For Residents

A care home is never just a building; it is a collection of lives, histories, and stories. My role matters because I am here to protect our residents' right to a life full of laughter, comfort, and purpose. Whether it is making sure a favourite meal is served, organising a special activity, or just stopping by for a morning chat, my priority is ensuring our residents don't just live at Athorpe—they thrive at Athorpe.

For Staff

I know how incredibly hard care teams work. Staff face emotional and physical challenges on every single shift. My role matters because I will be the biggest supporter and advocate. I am here to build a culture where you feel listened to, safe, and valued. When you have the right tools and a supportive environment, you can do what you do best: provide outstanding care

What I am striving for
• A Supportive Workplace: I want a workplace where you feel safe, valued, and listened to. If you are stressed or make a mistake, I want you to feel safe speaking up so we can solve it as a team. Your well-being is important.
• Total Resident Choice: We are moving away from rigid routines. Our residents shouldn't have to adapt to our schedules. We want to adapt to theirs
• Smarter Care, Not Harder Work: We are striving to use our digital tools to stay one step ahead and increase our contact time with residents
• An 'Outstanding' Reputation: I want Athorpe Lodge to be a shining light in the local community. When inspectors, families, or doctors walk through our doors, I want them to instantly feel the warmth, safety, and pride that you all put into your work.

Thank you for your dedication to these goals. Every small act of kindness and care brings us closer to achieving them!

I enjoy The Privilege of making a Difference: There is no other job where your daily decisions can instantly brighten someone's day. From seeing a resident smile during a favourite activity to watching a family breathe a sigh of relief knowing their loved one is safe, the job satisfaction is completely unmatched

I live the values
• Dignity First: We treat every resident as an individual with a rich history and a voice. This means knocking before entering, listening to their choices, and never treating their personal care as just a checklist task.
• Kindness & Compassion: Care is a work of the heart. We strive to bring warmth, patience, and a smile to every interaction—especially on the busy or challenging days when a resident or colleague needs it most.
• Total Trust & Honesty: We are a team built on safety. This means being open, transparent, and looking out for one another. If something goes wrong or a mistake happens, we speak up immediately so we can fix it together.

• Pride & Professionalism: We take massive pride in Athorpe Lodge. From the way we document our notes to the way we present ourselves and care for the building, we maintain the highest standards because our residents deserve nothing less.

My time outside work is spent with people I love and care about.
