As a family we struggled when mum went into care but Abbey village and the staff have been great . It's tough seeing your loved one in a home but the staff have been lovely and the senior team are open and honest and encourage feedback on anything we are not happy with my mum has been there 6 months
and has been offered lots of entertainment and is supported well . The staff make the difference here , person centred care is well practiced and the home do all they can to ensure my mum is looked after please ensure the team are recognised for the efforts they apply

In general, impressions are good. The residents' common room (the lounge) is too small in size, more space is needed here. Regular health checks for residents done "face to face" examinations, not by video link. Meals ought to be prepared within their own kitchens using fresh ingredients. In conclusion,
relatives' concerns need to be acted upon, this is not simply a P.R exercise. I welcome any dialogue or feedback.
Reply from Andrew Wood, Director at Abbey Care VillageThank you for your review. Abbey Care Village has 4 lounges on our dementia unit and 2 on the residential. To clarify residents are visited by there GP in person not via link (I must add the home would not control this anyway it would be through NHS). Our meals are prepared and served by our kitchen team onsite but the food is sourced via Apetito who are an award winning food supplier and provide the home with a variety of nutritional tools to support our residents. The home holds monthly residents and relative meetings and welcome feedback. Should you have any suggestions your welcome to attend these meetings or contact the home manager directly who would be happy to discuss further.

All staff are really friendly and professional. My mum has never had a bad word to say about the Carer's. Staff are very quick to act if she needs a Dr or medical attention. They have lots of daily activities to keep them entertained and have a social media page where you can see this. I find the staff
treat the residents like family. I recommend Abbey Care 100%

My brother has been a resident at Abbey Care Village for a few weeks. The care and cleanliness of the home is second to none. They are brilliant. He is calmer and happier and gets on very well with the other residents. Such lovely and caring staff.

We moved my father from another care home and I will say it has been the best decision. We wish we'd moved him here a lot earlier. The level of care is above and beyond what we could have hoped for. Thank you.

If I could give the home 0 then I would. My father went in for urgent respite care with a view to longer care as my mum was struggling to care at home. Every time I visited Dad he was sat in the lounge with other residents facing a wall rather than a TV despite the fact I repeatedly told staff he would
be happier in his room listening to music. There was no stimulation or engagement offered at all. Care records showed the activities coordinator visited residents once in 10 days to give them sweets. Some of the staff were rude and unpleasant. He was dirty every time I visited with faeces on his hands and clothes. Staff said they couldn't clean him due to aggression. Care records did not once record staff going back and trying again when Dad got agitated by strangers trying to wash him in an unfamiliar environment. There were no de-escalation techniques or basic dementia communication. The home manager said she didn't know about my dad's 'behaviours' but my dad does not behave the way he did in that home when in the community. He was like a caged animal, unstimulated, ignored, and showed no care. They also put 'DNACPR' next to Dad's name when not discussed with me. He is 75.
Reply from Andrew Wood, Director at Abbey Care VillageThank you for your review and we are sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the care provided. Having looked into this case it appears that the home was provided false information in the pre admission assessment and that the home is not a suitable setting for a resident with such challenging behaviours, had we been provided with the full information it is not an admission we would have allowed. To address some of the areas you have raised the home has a full activity program and full time activities coordinator evidence of the activities taken place can be seen on our website or social media pages. In respect of the DNACPR this is inaccurate and records do not reflect that. Finally staff receive full training on dementia and de escalation techniques.

I cannot praise Abbey Place enough!
Since my 94-year-old Mum came to stay I have noticed a marked improvement in her health and welfare.
She has settled well and I am relieved that she is well looked after.
Staff, including cleaners etc, are all fantastic!

My wife has been in Abbey Place Care Home for almost five years. During that time, my wife (who has dementia) and myself have always been treated with kindness and dignity by both management and staff. The care here is excellent and from my observation, all residents are treated with patience. The staff
treat the residents, not letting their dementia issues override the care they receive.

My husband has settled here very happily and speaks very highly of the staff. I have ticked more good than excellent because I have not been here often enough to judge. But it's good that there is something to aim for - a full house of excellent. My husband has been allowed his independence to go out
with friends and attend church. Catering staff have done their utmost to cook him meals that help his diabetes, many thanks to them. One small criticism that I hope will be accepted as constructive. I noticed on one visit a strong smell of urine in the corridor. Are incontinent residents helped and encouraged to go to the bathroom frequently and to change pads often?

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.428)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.428) out of 10 for Abbey Care Village is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.379 for Abbey Care Village is calculated as follows: ( (72 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (9 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.379
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.049 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbey Care Village is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 78 registered maximum number of service users is 15.6. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 15.6 = 0.449
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
