Ashlea Court is situated on Church Lane in the heart of Waltham Village, All Saints Church situated just down the lane provides residents with a monthly religious service within the home along with communion, if residents wish to partake.

There are well established links with the community and many events are held at the home that local people get involved with. The range of activities available includes quiz nights, pamper sessions, gardening, baking, aerobic exercise, trips to the pub, walks around the village, card games, dominoes and many more.

Residents are encouraged to be as independent and active as they are able to be and to retain interests and hobbies. Ashlea Court is open to suggestions about new activities and actively encourages everyone to come forward with any suggestions or ways in which the service can be improved, during regular committee meetings.

The home uses companies such as Dial-a-Ride who are used to take residents on outings, the favourites being Cleethorpes for an ice-cream or fish and chips on the sea front or to the local garden centre for a coffee and a chat.

Ashlea Court has 43 rooms spread over two floors. Garden rooms are situated on the ground floor in an extended part of the building. They are very spacious and have a good size en-suite as well as their own patio area.

Standard rooms on the ground and first floor have an en-suite and some of these rooms have an enhanced view on to Waltham allotments and surrounding areas.

On the first floor there are three recently refurbished suites which comprise of a sitting room, bedroom, small kitchenette and en-suite.

The hairdresser visits weekly on a Wednesday or a Thursday week dependent and the chiropodist visits regularly to keep on top of residents' footcare.

We had to seek urgent out-of-hours admission and made the phone call on a Sunday evening. From the moment that we took our family member into Ashlea Court, we knew we had made the right choice of urgent respite care for him. The staff on duty at the time were so caring, kind, and very reassuring at
a very traumatic time for the family, and he was looked after immediately and was settled into his room.
We returned the following day and met the day staff and the manager and were so impressed by their dedication, genuine kindness, skills and supportive reassurances to ourselves in what was totally new world to us.
Ashlea Court is a lovely place with genuine warmth and a caring atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff or the manager. Things that seemed so stressful to us were dealt with in a calm and comforting manner, and all the staff are obviously very experienced and skilled in their field. They have all taken so much pressure off us; we are very grateful.

My Mum became a resident at Ashlea Court very recently but I already feel very confident to write a review. From the minute Mum walked in she was made to feel extremely welcome, Mum was very anxious but all the staff are wonderful and she settled in quickly and has a lovely little room that is kept
clean and tidy. She tells me that the food is excellent and plentiful. There are regular activities going on and she can have her hair done weekly. Whatever time of the day I turn up the staff are upbeat. Always smiling and seem to know what Mum has been up to. I also feel strongly that the staff care about the residents' families as well. Upon leaving one day last week I was told to enjoy my weekend and not to worry about a thing - just what I needed! All in all a very caring care home.

Upon visiting my relative most days of the week for nearly 9 weeks, I found the home clean and the staff attentive to service users and visitors. When asked any questions, I am given an answer that satisfies me. My relative has only said twice that she was having a bad day. I personally have worked
in care/dementia homes and have found this home to be one of the good ones.

My very elderly mother was recently admitted to hospital from Ashlea Court. She returned some days later having received treatment and a revised care plan. The staff handled this process extremely well and all is back to normal with the usual attention to my mother's needs. She has been in Ashlea Court
for 8 years and looked after in a very caring and professional way. She is well known to all the staff and treated with dignity, understanding, and respect. From a personal perspective, a highly recommended care home providing excellent services to residents.

My mother has had a difficult time after losing her mobility and moving into Ashlea Court. The staff have been fabulous at trying to keep her moving and attending to her needs. She recently fell ill and was nursed back to health. The staff are constantly trying to stimulate the residents with parties,
games etc. Well done to them all, often under difficult circumstances.

Mum has been in Ashlea Court since February. We couldn't wish for better care for her. Mum has Parkinson's, no mobility and severe dementia. The staff are so caring, treating Mum like their own relative - nothing is too much trouble for them. Different activities are available throughout the week, there
are Sunday services for the religious, and there are visiting professionals offering such services as chiropody, opticians and hairdressers (these are at additional fair charges). Mum's room is kept clean; she has an en suite bathroom and a TV in her room. Mum says the food is nice and there are always seconds if she wants them. Although Mum needs a lot of personal care, it is done in such a caring way to preserve her dignity. I would like to send a massive vote of thanks to all of the staff for making Mums stay a happy, safe and secure one.

My mum went into Ashlea Court straight from hospital, it took her a couple of days to settle in. She really loved making new friends and the staff got her doing things. They made me and my family welcome. My mum always seemed happy and said she loved all the staff. She wanted to stay there but suddenly
she was taken poorly. The staff are amazing from the start until she passed away. I would recommend this home to everyone. Thank you all so much.

My mum was admitted at short notice for respite after suffering a fall at home, every member of staff was extremely kind and always had a smile for her. Her room was very clean and comfortable and there were no unpleasant smells in the areas we entered. The food was very good and plenty of choice. A
chair in her room for visitors to sit on would have been beneficial and maybe an information leaflet in her room giving meal times and any activities taking place would have been helpful, I wouldn't hesitate in using this care home again if required.

Mum was admitted at very short notice for end of life care. The professional abilities and caring nature of the many staff who looked after Mum was evident from admission through to the end. During her rapid deterioration, Mum was treated with total respect at all times, in a peaceful setting. And the
staff also looked after me in my vigil. Covid safety protocols were in place but did not interfere with care. I was not mixing with the home's residents but from what I could see through windows they appeared happy. The building is light and airy, and well maintained. Mum's room was of a good size and nicely furnished and decorated. This is a good place.

I would like to share our family's experience with this care home during my nana's final months here with us. While I fully understand that due to Covid, restrictions were in place, and rightly so to protect the residents and staff.
My nana had suffered two strokes while in hospital and was left unable
to care for herself and requiring end of life care.
Sadly we lost my nana early November, I can't really rate the care she received as despite being at end of life we were not permitted to visit at any point. My mum was the only one allowed and that was very limited. It would have been lovely to have had any sort of communication with the home to find out how our nana was and have our minds put at rest that she was in kind and caring hands. Instead, we had to deal with rude and disinterested staff, the home manager was near impossible to get hold of, and not helpful or reassuring at all. We were made to feel like we were a nuisance if we called for an update, absolutely awful attitudes!
Reply from Kelly Hallam, Manager at Ashlea CourtI am very sorry to read your feedback and can assure you we take all concerns seriously. I will discuss your concerns with my team at the next meeting. Here at Ashlea Court we have tried to offer the best support on End Of Life care during this Covid 19 pandemic and have constantly followed the government guidelines closely.

My Dad went in for respite for five days. Yes, they looked after my dad. I would not recommend here because you do not get hardly any of their belongings back. My dad went in with new clothing for five days, his medication and special beaker and glasses. We had to go back and pick up his beaker, his
two asthma inhalers which they had forgotten to give back also half of his clothing was missing and his glasses. We now have to get him a new pair as they are refusing to do anything about them, saying we will look for them. The thing is my dad had not lost them, it was staff as my dad cannot take them off himself, staff do. We were told they would ask around, which is not good enough really as we have to replace the stuff they lost.

Excellent, 5-star, gold service. My family and I are extremely grateful for the kindness and consideration were given to us and my husband. Everyone gives and goes above and beyond their duties, nothing is too much trouble and I think of all staff as part of my extended family. I am personally very
fond of all staff and would award each and every one of them a 'gold star'. I call them my 'angels in shoes'.

Overall, we are happy with the general care our mum is getting, and would not consider moving her. However, we feel that the general cleanliness of her room should be improved. On visits, we have noticed 'wee' smells in her room and on odd occasions, cleaned her bathroom ourselves. We feel the activities
for residents should be improved. Many residents are seen asleep or dozing in their daily chairs. We also feel the management should be more available for discussions. The general staff do have very good verbal interaction with residents. Overall 7/10.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.371)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.371) out of 10 for Ashlea Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 14 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.521 for Ashlea Court is calculated as follows: ( (95 Excellents x 5) + (61 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 165 Ratings = 4.521
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ashlea Court is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
