Amathea provides residential, dementia and short-stay care for up to 40 residents in a purpose-designed home in the heart of Workington, Cumbria.

Located close to local amenities and countryside, the home offers 40 single en-suite rooms and a dementia-friendly ground floor with direct garden access. Communal spaces include a cinema room, hair salon, quiet lounges, and a popular courtyard garden used for planting, relaxing, and social events with visiting animals.

Meals are freshly prepared by the in-house team using locally sourced ingredients. Menus are shaped by residents and include home comforts, themed international taster days, and seasonal favourites. Afternoon teas, birthday cakes and occasional treats like non-alcoholic prosecco add to the enjoyment.

The home is proudly resident-led, with regular meetings influencing everything from activities to home improvements. Budgies Ant and Dec, therapy pets, and the interactive ‘magic table’ support emotional and sensory wellbeing. Residents also enjoy karaoke, art, and an annual two-week music festival.

Outings to Allonby promenade, local pubs, and garden centres keep residents connected to the wider community, while quiet time in the garden or chapel offers reflection and peace.

At Amathea, care isn’t just about support, it’s about creating a community where residents thrive. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for residential, dementia or short-stay care, the team at Amathea are here to help.

Our mother took up residency in Amathea very recently; I found that the management and staff in her new home have treated mother with great care and respect, and much kindness. They have been monitoring Mam's safety and wellbeing-making changes responsively and subtly to enhance her dignity. We are
happy that Mam is safely cared for and in her terms, she has her independence back. We couldn't have asked for better care.

Reply from Cheryl Taylor, Home Manager at Amathea

We are so happy to hear this, our aim is to always empower our residents so they feel valued. We will continue to strive to ensure your mother feels safe and at home here at Amathea, she has quickly become a much loved member of the Amathea community. Thank you for your kind words and we hope to continue building a wonderful relationship with you all.

My mam went into Amathea on 15/4/2025. She has settled in very well and enjoys the company of the other residents. Her room is lovely and clean and we have made it homely for her with personal belongings.
The staff and management are all kind and considerate towards my mam. We as a family are included
in decision making and are notified regularly of any issues or concerns. We couldn't be happier for mam to live in the environment she is in. Amathea is a beautiful home.

Mum went into the Amathea for two weeks of respite care. She was very apprehensive and nervous about her stay. From day one, she settled in very well and has since decided to make her stay permanent. She finds the staff very friendly and is making some new friends.

My 85-year-old mother has been a resident at Amathea for four months now. Five stars. We have found Amathea to be a lovely and caring environment from every member of staff, they are polite and have time for every resident. The whole building is very well maintained. and kept spotlessly clean. Mother's
bedroom was freshly decorated before admission. No offensive odours (unlike many care homes). Excellent food and activity programme.

My mum has been a resident for nearly five years. I have had fantastic relationships with the staff. I am always kept in the loop and the home is extremely welcoming, never too busy to take time for any queries. My mum is very happy there. A huge thank you for the care my mum receives.

It is now four months since my stepmother went into care and we are delighted she has settled in well and is very happy and the quality of her care has been exceptional. There are many numerous things that make the whole time there so outstanding. We feel that the operative work, without doubt, is care.
The whole staff are really, without fail, very caring and attentive and always demonstrate a professional attitude whilst having time to talk to people. We as a family are delighted. Thank you.

The residents always look happy and my Aunt only has good words for the staff and all they do. I've worked in care for over 22 years and fully understand how difficult it can be to motivate individuals with dementia-type illness but these residents are always doing things with enthusiasm.

My mother entered Amathea quite unwell and very depressed following a hospital stay and caching covid in March this year. She is now a totally different lady in terms of positivity and physical strength. The activities provided by the Activity Coordinators are excellent and keep my mum stimulated mentally.
Care for her personal needs is of a high standard and the GP is contacted quickly when needed. I will forever be grateful to Amathea for their support and care of my mum at a particularly low point in her life.

Amathea has the kindest and loveliest staff. They have made my nana feel incredibly welcome at a very difficult time after an injury she sustained. Nothing is too much trouble and myself and my family are confident that my nana is well looked after in a warm and safe environment. We could not recommend
Amathea more. Thank you for everything.

My husband is the happiest he has been for ages. He enjoys all the activities. Since he had Covid, his dementia has got really bad, but all staff treat him lovely and with respect. Staff also ask about my welfare and it is appreciated. I couldn't answer some of the questions because I can't come inside
because of Covid. Many thanks for looking after him so well.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (8.998)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (8.998) out of 10 for Amathea is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.648 for Amathea is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.648

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.35 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Amathea is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.75

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
