Amathea provides residential, dementia and short-stay care for up to 40 residents in a purpose-designed home in the heart of Workington, Cumbria.

Located close to local amenities and countryside, the home offers 40 single en-suite rooms and a dementia-friendly ground floor with direct garden access. Communal spaces include a cinema room, hair salon, quiet lounges, and a popular courtyard garden used for planting, relaxing, and social events with visiting animals.

Meals are freshly prepared by the in-house team using locally sourced ingredients. Menus are shaped by residents and include home comforts, themed international taster days, and seasonal favourites. Afternoon teas, birthday cakes and occasional treats like non-alcoholic prosecco add to the enjoyment.

The home is proudly resident-led, with regular meetings influencing everything from activities to home improvements. Budgies Ant and Dec, therapy pets, and the interactive ‘magic table’ support emotional and sensory wellbeing. Residents also enjoy karaoke, art, and an annual two-week music festival.

Outings to Allonby promenade, local pubs, and garden centres keep residents connected to the wider community, while quiet time in the garden or chapel offers reflection and peace.

At Amathea, care isn’t just about support, it’s about creating a community where residents thrive. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for residential, dementia or short-stay care, the team at Amathea are here to help.

My father has been in this care home now for 6 months. During this time, the staff have been consistently excellent, treating my Dad with kindness, patience, and humanity. It was very difficult personally to accept my Dad was at the stage where he needed to move to a care home, but the outstanding staff
and high quality facilities and support have been an enormous reassurance to me.

My mother, unfortunately, had a brain aneurysm several years ago and is now a resident of the Amathea facility. I now live overseas so visiting the facility can be very infrequent, but I returned back to the UK recently and after visiting my mother in the Amathea facility I left feeling that my mother
could not be better cared for, the relaxed, informal yet professional atmosphere was a delight to experience, with all the staff happy, friendly and supportive.
Please pass on my sincere regards to all.

Reply from Tony Lyons, Home Manager at Amathea

My mother stayed at Amathea after a stay in hospital. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful, the rooms were very nice and clean, the food lovely. Mum ate better than she had for months, visiting was great and we could go any time and as often as we wanted.

Reply from Tony Lyons, Home Manager at Amathea

Following a stay in hospital my Auntie needed somewhere for a respite stay. We were lucky to find Amathea Care Centre. The staff made us all feel welcome and the care my Auntie received was wonderful. With a lovely room and excellent food her stay was as good as it could possibly be. Thanks to everyone.

My dad has recently become a resident here.
He seems settled and happy here. It is a cheerful place, well lit, bright and extremely clean and welcoming. All the staff are friendly and have endless patience and a good attitude to all the residents. The food is well prepared and appetising and varied.
My
dad is well looked after, cleanly shaven and mostly clean and fresh. Nothing is too much trouble and his room is comfy and warm.

For the past few weeks my mam has had some issues with her health and it's been a very worrying time but the carers have made it more bearable due to the excellent way in which they have cared for my mam. A very big thank you.

My sister is well looked after and regards her room as her flat. She is always complimenting the staff in her care especially the kitchen staff whose meals never fail to please her. She has settled in well and never expresses a wish to go out.

We always promised mum we would never put her in a care home and struggled on for a long time trying to care for her ourselves. Having gone through repeated hospital admissions mum was just not safe any longer when we were at work. The decision to let her go was very hard and caused a lot of 'anguish
and heartbreak'. But after many many visits to the Amathea care home, mum has settled really well and is extremely well looked after, is so much more physically well and most importantly she is safe! She has a lovely room and it is kept very clean and so is she. Mum is now in a safe and happy place, part of a big new family and couldn't be better cared for even by me. It has taken all the 'grief' away to see how very much the staff are devoted to the care of 'all' the residents and how they make you feel a big part of the family as well. We really could not have wished for better care for her. A big thank you to ALL THE STAFF every one of you deserves a medal :-)

Current Review Score: 9.0 (8.998)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (8.998) out of 10 for Amathea is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.648 for Amathea is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.648

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.35 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Amathea is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.75

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
