Located in a beautiful rural setting, with views over Westhill, Pitcairn Lodge is a home which is truly part of the local community. The team, many of whom have been with the home for over 10 years, are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents with activities and experiences which bring them joy.

Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, they also provide respite care breaks. These are ideal for family carers looking after loved ones at home, who would like to plan a short break themselves.

The community are embraced into life in the home, keeping those special connections alive. The team take the residents to churches they have gone to all their lives, as well as welcoming church groups into the home.

Local school and nursery children are regular visitors, joining in with activities and performing for the residents. There is a regular musical memories exercise group, a touring puppet theatre and therapy dogs. And the residents enjoy regular shopping trips, pub lunches and visits to community cafés.

The home has a large garden. This summer the residents have enjoyed growing their own produce in the raised beds, harvesting it for the chef to use in the kitchen.

Mealtimes are a real highlight of the day, with the home’s chef crowned winner of the regional Best Performing Chef award at Sanctuary Care’s MasterChef Conference. From delicious roast dinners with all the trimmings, to freshly baked cakes for afternoon tea.

There are welcoming lounges to enjoy activities and spend time with loved ones, who are welcome at any time. And there’s a private family and friends Facebook group, where families can see what their loved ones have been enjoying doing, even if they can’t be there in person.

A hairdresser visits twice a week for appointments with the residents in the home’s salon. And there are regular pamper sessions, with manicures and hand massages.

My Dad is a recent resident and from the start he has been made welcome and has been well cared for by the staff. He hasn't been the easiest to look after, especially at night but all efforts have been made to ensure his comfort and safety. I very much appreciated a phone call from one of the night
nurses to discuss Dad's usual routine, likes, dislikes etc to try to help him settle as she had not been able to see me in person.
Communication has been good with nursing staff phoning in a timely manner with updates on GP visits etc, chatting about how Dad is on every visit and regular emails keeping me up to date with events and activities coming up.
There were some difficulties in communication with Head Office initially with regards to finance, necessitating several phone calls, but this has been resolved.

Mum was very reluctant to move to a care home but she has really settled into Pitcairn Lodge. The staff have been very supportive and she loves her bright, sunny room. The food is excellent and just to her taste ie. not spicy and how she remembers food from her younger years.
There are lots of activities
on offer which the residents can do as much or as little as they choose.
The building is very clean, modern and all on one level so that has given Mum confidence in moving around.
She is looking forward to spending more time in the lovely gardens when the weather gets warmer.

My dad has been a resident at Pitcairn Lodge Nursing Home for over two years. During this time all his needs have been met with care and attention. Nothing is too much trouble, especially as my dad has a severe food allergy and the kitchen staff go out of their way to prepare food he can enjoy. Laundry
is turned around very quickly, I have never had to go looking for any items of clothing . There are always activities residents can participate in if they wish and seeing photos of them on Facebook enjoying themselves is reassuring. Staff and management are always available for a chat.

My wife, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, has been a resident of Pitcairn for nearly 8 years now and I simply cannot fault the service that she has received throughout this period.
Every aspect of the Home from location, staffing, service provision and facilities, etc is top-notch.
I simply cannot
imagine anywhere else that would be better for her.
My thanks, appreciation and admiration go to all the staff and home management team.

It's now coming up to the Christmas period and from the photos on social media (that are posted very regularly), they show how happy my mum is attending all the events (when she lived at home she never wanted to go out due to anxiety/dementia). There are always events she can take part in e.g. crafting,
baking, the nursery children visiting, going to a panto and rotary Xmas dinner, and it's wonderful to see her enjoying herself. Mum is well-fed (always gets her cup of tea), clean, dressed every day, has a routine and interacts with the staff and other residents in a positive way. Also from a medical perspective, the local GP and staff keep on top of any medical conditions that may arise. I know that she is receiving excellent care. I really want to give a big thank you to the management and staff who make Pitcairn a lovely home for my mum and a welcoming environment for us to visit.
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Pitcairn Lodge Nursing HomeThank you so much for your wonderful review. Thank you for your words of appreciation.

The staff try to engage with the residents throughout the day on a regular basis. Although it can be challenging with residents who have dementia they try to involve them in activities when they can.
Residents are encouraged to spend time in the lounges to avoid isolation by staying in their rooms.
The care home has improved the conditions by painting the lounges and replacing the carpets with flooring that is easier to clean and provides a fresh environment.

Since arriving at Pitcairn both Dad and I have been chuffed to bits with all aspects of this wonderful haven. From staff, food, hygiene, warmth and comfort, first-rate on all counts. The gratitude we both feel towards all concerned, management, nurses, carers, cleaners and aux staff cannot be overstated.
The transformation in Dad now from when he arrived is obvious for all to see, Thank you one and all, your ongoing efforts really do make such a difference.

My sister was admitted to Pitcairn in July 2020 during the Covid restrictions. The first eighteen months were challenging for residents, relatives and staff. My sister's mental health deteriorated fairly rapidly during this time (partly due to the reduced contact with family and friends and partly due
to the staff struggling to cope with restrictions. At the same time, maintaining staff motivation and standards was affected by things like staff sickness and staff leaving and a reduction in activities and staff/resident individual time with residents. There were several changes in the senior management team and admin, staff culminating, in the manager leaving and being replaced. Since the arrival of the new manager, things have started to improve greatly in the areas mentioned above, and there is much more openness to change. I am much happier with the overall care and potential for growth and improvement in standards. It was as if everyone had been suffering from "burnout".
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Pitcairn Lodge Nursing HomeThank you for your review. Our highly experienced home manager and her team are extremely passionate about involving families and our residents in how Pitcairn is run and wholeheartedly embrace positive change. Of course, 2020 was a terribly challenging time for everyone, not just the care industry, and we are delighted to be moving onwards and upwards.

They appear to be settling in nicely. The only thing I’ve noticed is that they have lost their independence and perhaps allow them to choose which clothes to wear on the day rather than pick ones for them, it’s maybe worth asking the person what they want on the day rather than decide for them.
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Pitcairn Lodge Nursing HomeThank you for your high-scoring review for our team at Pitcairn. I can assure you that we are passionate about supporting our residents to retain their independence. When we help them get ready in the morning, we take the time to discuss what they would like to wear, as well as what they would like to do that day. Of course, some of our residents who live with dementia may sometimes forget this, but it is something we ensure we do each and every day.

Choosing a nursing home, particularly in a crisis situation, is very difficult for the family and the person they are supporting to choose a new home. The process at Pitcairn Lodge Nursing Home was very smooth and lovingly activated. I am a nurse and a stickler for high-quality nursing care and have
been hugely impressed by the quality, compassion and love given to my step-mum since she joined in November 2022. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.738)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.738) out of 10 for Pitcairn Lodge Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 35 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.738 for Pitcairn Lodge Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (309 Excellents x 5) + (93 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 409 Ratings = 4.738
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Pitcairn Lodge Nursing Home is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 55 registered maximum number of service users is 11, which has been reached with 35 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
