Windyhall is an absolutely fantastic care home. Not only do they look after my gran wonderfully, they take time to speak with my grandpa every day and the staff have become great family friends. My gran has advanced dementia and moved into care during the pandemic when you could not visit the care home prior to admission. From phoning around and looking at reviews of various care homes in Ayr, I could tell there was only one that would fit the bill and the whole team made what was an extremely stressful time so much simpler. They could not do enough for us, then and to this day. The facilities are spotless, the activity schedule is brilliant and your relative is looked after as though they are one of their own. Some people do not understand the impact a relative going into care has on the rest of the family, particularly a spouse. Windyhall has been the most excellent support to my grandpa during this time and we are so grateful he has everyone looking out for him too.

Windyhall Care Home is a lovely homely care home. Mum is always treated with respect and compassion. The staff are so caring and have supported her well over the past few weeks (having just lost her beloved husband of 65 years).

Sometimes the only problem for mum is having no other resident to engage with. She cannot speak but understands everything, and the majority of the other residents she is sitting with have some form of dementia and cannot converse with her, unfortunately. I appreciate that this is an issue that is not easily resolved. Hopefully, it may change.

Reply from Lynne Conway, Manager at Windyhall Care Home

Many thanks for the review. I will pass this on to all staff and try to engage mum in activities with those who are able to converse.

First of all, I would like to point out that I have no complaint about the amazing staff and the work they do at Windyhall Nursing Home. But I have grave concerns about the company that owns Windyhall and 43 others in Scotland. My main concern is the exorbitant price increase in fees by 9%, £108 per week. One of the reasons that Care Concern Group gave for the increase was, and I quote "for testing and vaccinations of staff". This is a complete fabrication. I have this in writing. As we all know testing and vaccinations are free!. Do these people think we are stupid? There was an article in the newspaper about the blatant profiteering of this company. I am utterly disgusted with this company.

Dad has been in Windyhall now for nearly a year, the whole of which time under COVID restrictions. I can't begin to tell you the love, care, patience, medical care and understanding he has received from the staff team there. Not only him though. The Windyhall Team have been a huge support to Mum and I. There has been excellent communication regarding COVID updates, visiting guidelines, and problems Dad's had or issues arising etc, but most importantly, the staff are always happy to chat to us about how Dad is and to facilitate telephone calls or emailed messages to him. The visiting guidelines have been onerous on the home, but at every turn, they have reacted positively and efficiently to enable as much contact with Dad as was safe and allowed. This year has not been easy for anyone, but if Dad had been anywhere other than Windyhall, it would have been a much worse year for us, as a family and we are very grateful to the Windyhall Team.

My experience, as a relative, was one of comfort as a result of the amazing care and compassion given by all staff to my aunt. In her time in Windyhall Nursing Home.

I would like to add that when my aunt was at her most vulnerable during the last twenty months of her life, she was shown dignity, respect, compassion and positive encouragement through exemplary person-centred care. This exemplary care was further demonstrated during my aunt's last weeks of life and at the time of her death with the sensitive carrying out of last offices.

When I was told both my parents required full-time nursing care; my world was turned upside down. Finding the right home for them both was very important to me. I contacted a few homes, but I can honestly say Windyhall won my heart over from the first phone call. The staff went above and beyond to support me through the process. More importantly, I knew right away mum and dad would love it. Moving them into their new home was completed quickly and very efficiently. The staff made the 2-weeks isolation required that bit easier with video calls, telephone calls and regular updates. Their medical needs are treated with dignity and respect. When I got to visit them, I was delighted to see them looking so well and settled. They tell me the food is fabulous, and the staff are brilliant!! I can't thank Windyhall enough and highly recommend"

My gran got a place in Windyhall for respite as at age 92 she wasn’t coping at home. During respite, she realised that this place was better for her as she had support and company which she lacked at home with carers and family support. She was then granted a full-time place in Windyhall and remains a resident to this day. The difference in her is unbelievable and that is down to the caring, dedicated team. As a visitor, I am always greeted warmly and welcomed in as “part of the family”. I’m so glad that my gran has settled here and socialising and eating more as it means that she is living a better life and as a family that’s is all we hope for. During lockdown/covid the team at Windyhall have worked tirelessly to maintain an excellent standard of care and kept family update as much as possible- personally I loved seeing the pictures on Facebook. I can’t wait to see my gran again and can not thank the team enough for taking excellent care of not just my gran but all the residents.

Since Mum has gone in she has in all ways improved. Even with carers going in when she was at home she was not coping at all well.
Now she is more alert, looking better and is also putting on a bit of weight. (She was badly underweight when in her retirement home.)

The room, people and the set up are all good for her. I am very pleased and grateful for what has been done for her by Windyhall.

From the moment my brother and I first visited Windyhall, to see if it would be suitable for our mum, we were made to feel welcome and got the impression that it was very homely. Mum has now been a resident for more than three years and she is very happy and settled. The staff are always happy to help with anything you need when visiting. Over the last few months, in particular, I have noticed that despite the extraordinary circumstances, whenever I phone or Skype the staff are so helpful and cheery. This can't be an easy time but it has been so reassuring to know that the outstanding level of care, which has always been evident at Windyhall, is still very much in place at such a worrying time for all families with loved ones in care homes.

I cannot thank enough, all the staff involved in the care and well being of the residents throughout the home. From management down, it is indeed a very special team.

My best friend now lives in Windyhall and has done for the past two years. Sadly, her husband was also in their care before her, so I have been visiting Windyhall for many years. I have found the whole ambience of the home warm and welcoming to all visitors.
My friend is very happy there and it feels like visiting a family home every time I go. The staff are caring and cheerful at all times and go about their work in a discrete and efficient manner.
Activities are well thought out and are appropriate for all differing abilities. Special events and celebrations are designed to be inclusive to everyone - residents, family, friends and even visiting school children. My grandson who is six has been coming since he was a toddler and loves visiting Windyhall.

Many thanks for all you do. It’s much appreciated.

Our mother has dementia and has been staying at Windyhall since autumn 2019. We are all extremely happy with the care she is receiving, and Mum is always happy and content when we visit or speak to her. The staff are professional, very friendly, and eager to help. Nothing seems to be too much bother for them. Be it helping get Mum's room arranged the way she'd liked, or letting us speak to her on the phone every day, they go out of their way to help, even when they must be very busy with other duties. The weekly activities are of a good standard, especially the musical afternoons, and they have been very accommodating of our father when he was making his daily visits pre-Covid. Throughout the Coronavirus lockdown, the home has maintained excellent communication and standards. I am happy and confident that Mum is safe and well looked after.

I thought I would dread visiting my mum in a home, but the atmosphere at Windyhall is so positive and friendly that I look forward to it!

Review from Kay L (Cousin of Resident) published on 10 July 2020 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
My experience of Windyhall predates the COVID-19 pandemic; when my cousin's partner became terminally ill and died earlier this year. My cousin's limited ability to understand what was happening did not deter the staff; quite the opposite; as they found ways to support her and looked after me.
The Care Home Manager and her staff have always shown a real example of loving care of this Elderly Group and in recent months taken on other roles. When relatives could not visit their loved ones, their cheerful, and positive approach reassured us as they found innovative ways to keep us connected.

Managing our visits now poses fresh challenges which they manage with the same equanimity. We must never forget the debt we owe this group, who have looked after our relatives, putting them and their families at risk every day they care for our loved ones.

Windyhall is a lovely, homely environment. It is decorated and furnished very tastefully and we could bring any favourite pieces of furniture, ornaments or pictures for Mum’s room that would personalise it for her. The staff are warm, friendly and professional and the management team encourage feedback from residents and relatives. We are always kept informed of what’s going on and often involved in decisions. I would highly recommend it.

My husband has been resident in this nursing home since June 2019. The management and staff were very caring and got to know the person he is! They include him in conversations and encourage him to take part in all the activities. He enjoys the entertainment, word searches and skittles. The carers ensure he has sight of the daily papers. Weather permitting, they take him out for a short walk. Early in March, he had a great 84th birthday celebration - after that, we went into lockdown. We ring him frequently and he always seems to be very content!

Our dad spent 4 months in Windyhall, he was frail but with full capacity. From the time my sisters and I first visited, through Dad's admission and stay, the family and Dad were treated with empathy and kindness. From the outstanding manager to the wonderful staff, Dad was provided with excellent care, delivered with compassion and always with his individual needs in mind. Dad died peacefully and with dignity, we were encouraged to spend as much time with him as we could and his end of life care was wonderful. Dad said often 'they're good folk'. High praise from him!

We are forever in their debt. They are simply wonderful.
