Overall, my husband is happy here. The staff are pleasant, some more helpful than others. Management is easy to speak to about any problems.

When my mum first went into Bearehill, I was unsure of what to expect by way of treatment and care for her, but with her having been in Bearehill for several weeks now, I am relieved to say that everything I have seen during visits and my interactions with the staff has reassured me that my mother is being well cared for.

As with other reviewers, I would concur that the decor is looking a bit tired, but in general, the place is kept clean and tidy, and the most important aspect is my mum is being looked after.

Reply from Sue Ashton, Home Manager at Bearehill Care Home

Many thanks for your feedback. The home is working through a refurbishment plan, and we hope to have this finished by the end of the year. The staff work hard to ensure that the best and kindest care is delivered to their residents.

My dad stayed at Bearehill for around one month's respite care. During that time, he was very happy and received excellent care. I was content knowing he was being well looked after, and the only reason I have moved him from Bearehill is to be closer to me in Aberdeen. Keep up the good work.

My mum has been a resident in Bearehill for some time now. Recent work in the building has seen many improvements, where things may have been looking a little tired, and the home always looks tidy and welcoming and smells fresh and clean. It is also very 'homely', with attractive pictures and lots of photographs of the residents on the walls taking part in activities both inside and outside the home. The staff are always calm and reassuring and although my mum is not a great 'joiner in' with activities she is always gently encouraged to participate and has her weekly hairdo. Staff always take the time to wave and stop by her room and my mum knows them all by name and enjoys a chat and a smile with them. They are all very kind and caring and in many ways have become her extended family as she spends much more time with them than she does with me. I feel very happy and confident for her to be in their care.

The staff work really hard under the present conditions and should be commended.
There looks to me that there should be more staff to help.
The facilities are excellent and the Activities Coordinator is brilliant.

I found that my husband was very well treated when he was taken in for respite care (I had to go into hospital for a cancer procedure). His room was good and on ground level which was very good for him as his balance isn't very good. The food was good and varied. All the staff were very polite and helpful and couldn't do enough for him.

My mother was admitted to Bearehill Care Home for emergency respite care but is now a permanent resident in the Lawrence dementia unit. The family is very pleased with the standard of care and support afforded to her. Staff are kind, helpful and understanding. They are approachable and family members are always made to feel welcome when they visit. Communication between the home and family is very good and we are always informed of issues as they arise.

We feel that management and staff have a good understanding of my mother's needs.

I came into Bearehill Care Home, Brechin in October 2014. I had spent a few weeks in the hospital and after the blood test - 8 in each arm, I was told - very gently by a male doctor - that I had about 6 months to live, over three years later I am still alive!! I am happy in Bearehill. All the staff are very kind, management, carers - female, male - day and night staff, domestic staff and maintenance man. I am a widow - 94 years old - my husband was in the Royal Bank, transferred here from Aberdeen, he died in 1989 (when I say here, I mean Brechin).

My mother went into Bearehill for respite prior to long-term care placement as an emergency admission to the new dementia unit. The staff were very welcoming and instantly put mum and us at ease. The staff at all times were kind, helpful and supportive and dealt with all issues as they arrived. Had we not got a placement nearer home, would have been happy for mum to stay there permanently. She was in for 5 weeks.

I'm extremely happy with the care provided for my mum. She loves the staff and they are wonderful with her. My siblings and family are all made welcome when we visit. Information is given when required and the staff are happy to explain things to us if necessary. All in all, I am very happy mum is being cared for in Bearehill.

My one criticism is the decor in mums room is rather dull and requires freshening up.

Review from Bill B (Son of Resident) published on 7 October 2016 Submitted via Postal Card

It is evident that the home is underequipped as there is insufficient staff to provide the proper levels of care to the residents, including my mother. Whilst I personally have not seen the food, my mother advises me that the quality is not good and has not been well cooked. This has been evidenced by other visitors to my mother. When considering my mother pays circa £2,800 per month (on top of this, Angus council pays a further £1,000), this provides a very low value for money. A new manager was recently appointed and it is hopeful that they will produce material improvements.
