I have been visiting my mother every 4 - 6 weeks for over 5 years since she was moved to the Camp Road Care Home, St Albans. She is now totally immobile and depends totally on staff care. I am very impressed by the help of the care home staff and grateful for all that the staff do for her. I typically
see her for 45-60 minutes each visit. At 91, she had coped very well. I value the doctors and staff who care for her medically as well as pastorally. I accept that limited intervention may help a little in due time to bring a good end to her very limited life.

My mother was transferred to The Orchard Nursing Home from a residential home as her needs changed dramatically. Having spent just a month in The Orchard both her physical and mental health have improved far beyond expectations. I believe it to be due to the whole team approach which is very caring
and planned around the individual needs. I feel very much part of the team supporting her to be happy relaxed and out of pain so that she can enjoy the short time has had. There is a relaxed compassionate and caring feeling around the whole plan that mum is now part of.

The care home is such a wonderful place to come into. Everyone is so friendly and happy. It’s a pleasure to visit. The best bits are the activities which are so well run and managed. They really make an effort for all the residents and think of so many unique and interesting things to do.

The Orchard Nursing Home is a home-from-home for my mum.
She is completely settled and so comfortable.
Mum is a type one diabetic with increased dementia issues so needs care in maintaining her diabetes.
The staff care for her with such kindness and professionalism.
She has the opportunity to join
in daily activities and has made friends.
Never an easy decision to have a loved one move into a care setting but The Orchard has made it so much easier for us.

My Mother suffered from Vascular Dementia and moved to The Orchard Nursing Home in January 2020. We were so thankful that she was being looked after by such kind and caring staff, in all departments, throughout the Pandemic, and the Orchard won an award for its care during this period. Despite being
bedridden, all of her needs continued to be met throughout her time in the Home, including spiritual ones, as the Well-Being Team ensured that she continued to have Bible and prayer readings on a regular basis. She finally passed away in her own, lovely room, with family by her side in March, aged 96. The care not only for my Mother but also for family members during her last days was outstanding, ensuring that she passed peacefully without any pain. I would not hesitate to recommend the Orchard to anyone requiring any level of care. All residents receive one-to-one attention, not just for physical needs, but for social interactions as well, ensuring that each person still has a quality to their life.

The Orchard has definitely improved in the 9 months.
There is greater stability of staffing: the good staff seem to be rostered more frequently.
After 6 months of almost daily complaints about my father’s care plan not being followed - food he can’t eat/would choke on, pills found on the bedroom
floor, sitting rooms unsupervised, low standards of cleaning, my father unshaven, ulcer on toe as foot checks not regular, things are now much better.
The nursing staff always were very good.
Some of the care staff are very good.
Food is noticeably improved.
Activities were always very good, now even better: more outside talks and regular exercise on the programme.
Cleaning is getting better.
Love that they sit friends together at mealtimes.
Only marked safety as poor as the movement sensor isn’t always on in my Dad’s room and there are not always staff with the residents in the sitting room - so my father has had more falls/been discovered later than would otherwise be the case.

My mother has been at The Orchard Nursing Home since leaving another home that was not up to standard. Whilst she will never be 100% happy in her situation she has said that it is a very good home, much better than the last and the staff are great. Only this week she told me that all the rooms were
a good size and nice and bright - this includes the communal rooms as well as her own.
As a relation, I can only say how good the staff are, all the staff from reception and management to nursing staff. Any query is generally answered within minutes not hours, whether by phone, in person or by email. There is never a limit to the length or time of a visit. Mum is always encouraged to join in activities and I feel that the staff genuinely care, it isn't just a job.
I would definitely recommend The Orchard.

My mother recently moved into The Orchard Nursing Home and has settled well. She has high nursing needs and has difficulty communicating, but her needs are being fully met by the home. The home is really well run and the staff are lovely and caring, they are really friendly and professional. They are
always available to chat through any concerns.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious and are all decorated to a good standard, unfortunately, my mother is unable to take advantage of the in-house hair salon and little cafe, where there are always a selection of cakes/pastries!
I am extremely happy with the home and would be happy to recommend the home for either respite or long-term care.

My Dad came to The Orchard for respite care, this was so I could go in and see him, as he lives a long way away from me. Our family have never had to use care homes or elderly care before, so we were somewhat nervous. However, all I can say is that the care staff and nurses made my dad and us feel very
welcome. The care he received was excellent, loving and understanding. They very quickly got to know his needs, he thought the food was amazing (this from a fussy person). The room was good, and if we had stayed longer we could have made it more of a home-from-home. The activities looked excellent and Dad did join in and enjoyed them, but he also was allowed respectful 'me time' too. They have a statement in the home which says that the workers are coming to work in your home, as the Orchard is the home of those that live there. All the staff take this on board. My biggest thing was that the home was not awkward about my many visits nor how many times a day I came to see him.

My mother was at The Orchard for nearly 7 years. She was always treated with respect and care. Her room was bright and airy and her clothes were always neatly washed and pressed. The carers were all aware of my mother's needs and if she needed anything, they would always let us know so we could bring
it in for her. We got to know all the carers and nurses on the second floor very well and felt like part of the family at the home. Although my mother could not really participate in any of the activities, the activities team always included her.

it was Mum's birthday on Aug 20th. The staff made her a cake and brought it in and sang happy birthday to her. This was organized by the activities coordinator on the 2nd floor. It was a really lovely touch. Mum has been in the Orchard since April 2021 with severe dementia. She's well looked after and
I see the same staff regularly, whenever I visit. The staff keep regular contact with us (Mum cannot really communicate with us now) and let us know whenever there is an issue or Mum needs something bringing in.

I searched extensively for a placement for a loved one for whom the placing was of an urgent matter. I was impressed with the home from the reception I received on arrival. The place was clean and the decor pleasant. I was given a tour of the home and while walking around was told what the home had
to offer. The lady showing me around knew and greeted all the patients by name but what impressed me the most was that, while viewing the patio and garden, she noticed that a resident was cold, walked over and adjusted a blanket around the lady with a kind word. The lady with me was not a nurse hence my pleasant surprise at her actions. My friend was admitted shortly after this first visit. The nursing staff keep me informed of anything relating to my friend's welfare and do their very best to see to his needs. It gives me comfort knowing he is in good hands and that I can continue giving personal care to my loved one without having to contend with the day-to-day needs he has.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.687)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.687) out of 10 for The Orchard Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.687 for The Orchard Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (192 Excellents x 5) + (70 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 268 Ratings = 4.687
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Orchard Nursing Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
