Although the care home is tired and in need of new carpet and furniture, the care given to mum and I has been good most of the time Her wishes and mine have been respected and appreciated
The food has been ok. Interesting at times with the different chefs and their skills. I feel it sometimes
understaffed although I've been told it's not
I made friends with most of the staff and in the early days when it was busy , there was a lot of laughter at times

As a fulltime carer, I needed a break and made a visit. Right from the start, I was greeted by very pleasant and helpful staff who went overboard with explanations, etc. Decision made, my wife went in for 3 weeks respite care, and I could not have wanted for anything better. Staff were great, the food
looked good and not once did I hear the wife complain or say she wanted to go home. If the need arises again, I would have no hesitation in going back to this care home. Many thanks to all.

Whittington House Nursing Home

from L F (Daughter of Resident) published on 10 September 2025
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My Mum has been a resident at Whittington House for 6 months now and has settled in well, with the help of the kind, caring staff. We are generally very happy with Mum's care and also with the impressive range of meals that are on offer every day, but there are just a couple of niggling things that
I would like to mention. The website for Whittington is very striking and we were impressed with the furnishings however these are very sad and aged and the general maintenance is poor, dusty air vents, broken furniture, dingy paintwork in places and most annoying, curtains hanging off rails and even a cornflake and old tape on the ceiling of the day room which has been there for at least as long as Mum has been a resident. Carers can often be found in the Day Room sitting amongst residents, focused on their phones instead of making conversation and encouraging the residents to chat. I would ideally like to see more investment in the Home considering the above average monthly costs
Reply from Kirsty Hopton, Home Manager at Whittington House Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are so pleased to read your positive comments about the team and the range of food we offer. With regards to our team being on their phones, our team are not permitted to have personal devices with them when they're working, but we do use handsets, called PCS devices, to help us record and deliver care. These look very similar to mobile handsets and we are in the process of putting up some posters to explain this to families, but please do let us know if you have any questions about these or if there's anything else we can help with.

Latham Lodge Nursing and Residential Care Home

from I R (Brother of Resident) published on 4 September 2025
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
I have the greatest need to thank each staff member at Latham Lodge for the extraordinary care, treatment and attention given to my brother each & every day during his stay of 2 years & 5 months at Latham Lodge.
Prior to he was required to vacate his residency of a self-caring residential home at
the age of 94 years due to his inability to care for himself & the property. Primarily his condition was caused by excessive use of over prescribed medication. The situation caused me an unexpected stress & anxiety, however, a seamless transfer to Latham Lodge relieved some concerns. The medical team assessed & controlled the medication dosages & restored his health and capacity to my utter relief.
Despite his frequently expressed contentment, I would occasionally apply a test by asking whether if he would like to transfer to a top notch care home, his replies were consistent & final " Why would I want to leave here these people are kind, friendly & attentive to my every need", says it all !
Reply from Kelly Bessey, Home Manager at Latham Lodge Nursing and Residential Care Home

Mum came into Tarring Manor in Dec 23 and it was like a luxury hotel with a menu and food to match. Unfortunately due to staff recruitmate, the standards of both food and cleaning have dropped. The staff at present do a wonderful job of caring for mum but there are not enough staff, especially at weekends.
The entertainment team are excellent.

Mum has been a full time resident at Whittington House for over a year having previously attended several times for respite care.
She is very settled and happy there. Her room is good with a huge window looking onto the surrounding trees which she likes. The staff are always happy to talk and take
time with her. I always feel welcome when visiting and have joined in with activities. It is lovely to know that she is well looked after and has plenty of company and activities to pass the days.
The office staff are very helpful and efficient too.

I always receive a warm welcome when I visit my wife and all the carers know my name. All the staff do a good job. They keep me informed about my wife's wellbeing. I have no complaints or suggestions for improvement. Car parking can be an isssue at times as can gaining access to the building at weekends.

On admission we informed the staff present of mum's needs, but we have found that these are not always regularly carried out. We also feel that the room could be vacuumed more regularly. We have found all the staff very welcoming and caring.

My wife who is resident and suffers from advanced Alzheimer's (she's non mobile and non verbal) was admitted to Whittington House Cheltenham in May 2024.
Whereas I'm somewhat resigned to her condition being unlikely to improve radically, I have been really encouraged by her response to the
excellent care she has received: she invariably greets staff and fellow residents with a smile and some staff appear to recognise some of the facial expressions she uses to communicate. I am able on a daily basis to take her to her room where I can try various means of eliciting responses/ recognition from her. Eg music (she was a professional musician), photos and familiar scenes/ images from her past. She is always clean and usually dressed appropriately. She appears to eat very well and any issues I've had are invariably answered/ dealt with promptly. All in all our joint experience at Whittington has been of a high standard.

My brother-in-law is being well looked after and is happy at Benson House. Since he has been there he has become more sociable and happily speaks to and relates to other residents. Staff are friendly and helpful. He enjoys sitting and walking in the garden. He enjoys the meals. Medical help has
been appreciated. Although his stay will be temporary the experience has given him more confidence to live a more independent life.
