Reviews

8.4 Castle View Nursing Home has a Review Score of 8.4 (8.421)

The Review Score of 8.4 (maximum of 10) for Castle View Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4 out of 5 from 6 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Castle View Nursing Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.042 for Castle View Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (14 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.042

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.379 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Castle View Nursing Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 13.2 positive Reviews (66 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 5 Reviews ÷ 13.2 Target = 0.379

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Overall we are happy with the care my mother receives.

The only problems we came across are that her hearing aid battery is not always changed when required and so limits her interaction.

She has 'lost' her teeth on a number of occasions but if they were placed to soak overnight, this would not happen!

We feel the food is of a high standard and staff are very good.

My mother has been a resident since mid September 2013. She is not (as yet) a 'heavy duty' resident, despite being 97 in December! She washes, dresses herself and still has remarkable cognitive abilities and senses. She is mobilised with a Zimmer and for further distances, a push wheelchair. She considers her room her home and is both happy and content.

There have been a few caring issues both before and since Caring Homes took over. The manager keeps an open door policy and although I live in Bristol, I speak to my mother at least twice a day from wherever I am. I spend at least 8 hours with her every day when I visit - my visits are never less than a week - mostly longer. All my negative concerns have been emailed to the manager who is, in my view, an excellent manager, as are the team.

John Adair, Home Manager at Castle View Nursing Home responded to this review on 17 Oct 2017:

We are delighted that your mother is happy and content at Castle View and that she is being fully supported to do as much for herself as possible. Our home manager’s door is always open to residents and relatives and we are pleased that any concerns have been dealt with quickly and effectively. We hope you will continue to share your thoughts with us in the home in future.

I am very happy with the care received by my Mum. The staff are well trained and extremely thoughtful, knowledgeable and compassionate. If I had had any concerns or worries staff are always helpful and spend the time to help. The manager is always available and approachable should I wish to speak with him. My only concerns are the level of staffing does appear low putting staff under unnecessary pressure during busy periods and the home is in need of some decoration and remedial building works.

John Adair, Home Manager at Castle View Nursing Home responded to this review on 17 Oct 2017:

We are delighted to hear that you are happy with the care your relative is receiving at Castle View and you find our team to be well trained, extremely thoughtful, knowledgeable and compassionate. The care and wellbeing of our residents is always our top priority.

At Castle View, we take great pride in listening to our residents, relatives and friends and ensuring we deliver high-quality care and facilities. We run regular recruitment campaigns to build our care team thus ensuring they are able to provide person-centred care and spend valuable time with our residents. Rest assured that at all times we ensure we have the appropriate staffing levels and skill mix in the home. We always welcome the opportunity to improve and hope that you will continue to share your suggestions with us in the home in future.

We are pleased that mother has settled into Castle View Nursing Home. Initially, she was extremely poorly with vascular dementia, hip problem, she is now mobile with the use of a zimmer frame. She likes to be washed/dressed much earlier than 10:00 am lack of staff? She enjoys the afternoon activities but would like them everyday, holiday, admin, illness means no activities some days. Appreciates the hairdresser service. Likes the current chef making fresh fruit salad for her.

John Adair, Home Manager at Castle View Nursing Home responded to this review on 26 Sep 2017:

We are delighted to hear that your mother has settled in well at Castle View and is enjoying the activities, care and food on offer here. The health and well-being of all our residents is our absolute priority and we work with every resident to ensure they get the care and attention they need. We are currently working to recruit suitable new colleagues to join our team, and in the very near future, all residents will see new faces offering care and support in the home.

Our home manager’s door is always open as we welcome the opportunity to improve, and hope that you will continue to share your suggestions with us in the home in future.

Shortage of staff bedevils all attempts to excel. Staff on duty make every effort to cover but find it difficult. Increased remuneration would undoubtedly improve recruitment and retention of well-qualified personnel.

John Adair

Job Title: Home Manager

Description:

I am a dual registered nurse with over 30 years’ experience, having worked in a variety of clinical and managerial roles within acute, community, NHS and the private sector. Even though I have worked with other age groups, I always find that I return to care of the elderly.

Since arriving on the Isle of Man, my role has been to provide a consistent managerial presence at Castle View, and assist in the transition from the previous owners to Caring Homes. I manage my team with a personal, caring approach and believe that my nature is best suited to nurturing others to achieve. I enjoy seeing my staff develop and empowering others to provide the best care that they can to the residents.

My biggest achievement to date at Castle View is assisting the home to introduce the ‘Living in My World’ dementia training programme and promoting members of staff to become trainers for their peers.

Outside of work I enjoy cooking, photography, eating out, reading, travel, the cinema and looking after our two Irish Setters – Guinness and Copper, and our ragdoll cat – Mr Quigley.
