Hallmark Penylan House

Both my mother for 9 months and my father for 18 months to date have been cared for at Penylan House. Very satisfied with the level of bespoke care provided both from dementia care and general nursing perspective. Despite the difficulties of Covid, there is plenty of tailored engagement and activities for each resident, and of communication channels with families.

I have found the care in the home excellent, the staff in all areas are kind and caring and very friendly to the relatives and keep you informed of all things pertaining to your relative in care. They are always welcoming and helpful nothing is too much trouble for them. I would have no hesitation to recommend the home to anyone.

As a family, we were looking for a care home for Mum four years ago as it became clear her dementia was making it difficult for her to remain at home. Following an extensive search of most care homes in Cardiff and surrounding areas, the one that stood out for us as a family was Penylan House. It was the best decision we could have made, four years later Mum is still in the care home and whilst her condition has deteriorated significantly she has received the most wonderful care from a dedicated and professional team. The staff have faced significant challenges during Covid but at no stage has Mum's care been compromised, she is happy, comfortable and leading the last stages of her life with dignity and respect. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the home to anyone looking for a place for their loved ones. We as a family have no regrets.

After visiting several nursing homes in Cardiff two years ago for my brother, I was recommended to visit Penylan House. I am pleased to say that to this day, I am so glad that I did. All staff, particularly the nursing and support staff, have gone that extra mile in ensuring that they have not only got to know my brother, but also his family to deliver exceptional care for him. The activity team are innovative, full of energy and fun in organising activities for the residents’ stimulation and enjoyment. The rooms and lounges are light, airy and kept spotlessly clean. All staff, from those who make sure the residents’ clothes are beautifully laundered to those who provide delicious nutritious meals, work tirelessly to ensure my brother has the best care. All teams, together with a strong management team, make Penylan House a real home from home and I highly recommend it.

Penylan House has been amazing, even before the pandemic, the care they have given to my mum is exceptional, and throughout the pandemic has been exceptional too. Regular contact was made available to me through video calls, which made not seeing my mum in person bearable. The first day we were able to visit with a car park visit last May was so emotional, and I know the staff at Penylan House worked so hard to make this possible. I will be forever grateful.

My mother resides in Penylan House Community Nursing Home and she is treated so well there, it really does put myself and my sisters at ease knowing how well mum gets cared for, we really couldn't ask for more. During lockdown obviously, all families were concerned for their loved ones and with my mother having Alzheimer's we were worried about her remembering all of us as we weren't able to see her, however, we knew she was in good hands and now that we can see here again we can see how hard the staff worked to make sure mum was kept in good health. We are now able to visit and normality seems to be coming back. I would like to give my thanks to the hardworking staff as they have been first class in every way.

My mother has been a resident for almost 6 years, during which time she has been very well looked after at all times and is clearly content with all aspects of Penylan House. All staff are devoted to duty in their care of all residents, they are always on hand and eager to assist in all situations. During the very difficult Covid pandemic the staff have managed to keep up the spirits of all residents who were sadly kept separate from their loved ones during the lockdown times. Staff have always assisted my mother with telephone and video calls, this has indeed been a tremendous asset and morale booster for both residents and relatives. There are daily activity sessions and frequent "special occasions" put on by staff for the entertainment of all, including music and dance sessions, art classes, choir practise etc. I cannot praise the entire Penylan House team enough, it is a superb nursing home that deserves a five-star rating.

We are extremely happy that we chose this home for Mum. During the six years she stayed there, Mum received excellent care. She always appeared well looked after and we witnessed how hardworking the staff were to ensure her individual needs were met. The staff were always friendly and polite, treating Mum with dignity and respect at all times. The Activities Team also worked tirelessly to provide a fabulous range of daily activities, catering for all residents, including making use of the lovely surrounding gardens. Sadly, Mum passed away recently but we appreciate the wonderful care she received and friendships made with staff during her time there. We highly recommend this home to anyone considering this type of care provision.

My dad has been in a few homes in the last 6 years and Penylan House is surely superior to any other homes he has been in. It's five stars without a doubt. The staff go above and beyond, they are all very kind and caring to the residents and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. During the pandemic, they made sure they kept in touch and updated us all the time. They are always doing different activities and theme days, make cakes and cards on their birthdays. Always very welcoming to us when we visit. I would recommend Penylan House to anybody, first-class!

I have found all staff at Penylan House with no exceptions whatsoever to be extremely caring and diligent in all aspects of care. The comfort and enjoyment of residents are at the forefront of their care.

All the staff, no matter what their role, are friendly and caring people. They treat the residents with respect and love as if they are one of their own relatives. They also make a big effort to get to know all of the family and friends of the residents. The home is well equipped and resourced to care for my father where this wasn't achievable previously. Hats off to all the care staff and employees who work there as I'm sure they aren't paid enough for caring for our loved ones, some things words can never emphasise.

This care home is a very special one. I know my mum is being cared for and loved and that's all I could ask for. The commitment the staff put in to provide her care is exemplary. They provide lots of opportunities to stimulate her and are dedicated to their duty. Thank you for everything. My heart is full of love for these very special people.

Afternoon concert most enjoyable.

Staff really helpful and caring. Food is first class. Activity staff always on top form.

My aunt was treated with the respect, dignity and excellent care.

I think the standard of care and management is so much better because its not run like a profit making business, its not about the bottom line, the ratio of staff is more than the minimum required by law, so if someone is off sick the place doesn't descend into chaos.

The carers and nurses wear the same colours, everyone is equal. All staff have time and kindness in abundance. including management.

I sleep at night. priceless.

And the place never smells.

My only wish is the carers were paid more, they do an amazing job.

Food sometimes not good (I have offered to cook) but mostly ok.

The food gripe is tiny when compared to all the pluses.

Mother in secure unit. She feels safe and well cared for. The carers are always pleasant and helpful and nothing seems too much trouble for them. Sometimes at weekends they are understaffed but this isn't always the case. Her bedding and clothes are changed every day and she is encourage to get dressed as often as possible. The food could be improved on as she only takes liquids so apart from soup its mainly juice, it would be nice to see some healthy drinks, vegetable juices and freshly made smoothies.

Excellent standard of care but sometimes let down by large turnover of staff and having to use agency staff. Great activities but unfortunately nothing on the weekends.

If I had to choose a care home in Cardiff I would certainly choose this one and have already booked it favourably to several friends. My family is very pleased that I am here. The staff are very kind and friendly and always smiling, which means a lot. They are most helpful and nothing is too much trouble. I don't yet know how long I shall be here.
