Wytham House offers care, encouragement and empathy to all its residents. Also, as a relative, it has been a relief to have confidence in the safety aspects and inclusion, where possible, in a variety of activities. I always feel the staff take a personal interest in their residents whatever their limitations.
In addition, during the difficult days of the pandemic, the staff remained calm and courteous during phone calls. It is definitely a place to recommend for dementia care.

Wytham House is a sinking ship. I have been trying to get my mother out of there for the last month but because of yet another covid outbreak, I could not move her until now. The nurses and remaining staff are trying their best but they are struggling. Communication with residents is poor and complaints
to the company are not dealt with satisfactorily. To say I am disappointed by them is an understatement. Caring Homes are more interested in profit than care and the service my mother gets considering what she pays in fees is basic, to say the least. What they promise on their website is not what they provide. They have just raised the fees by 8% which is unacceptable.

Thank you for your open feedback, which we welcome, as it is vital in our understanding of where and how we need to improve. We are sincerely sorry that your experience has not been a good one, and we agree that it does fall well below the standards that we expect to deliver to all that we care for. We note though that you have scored both the Staff and the Care/Support with more confidence, for which we thank you.

I was initially very happy with the care of my father - they managed to get him without a catheter and there was a real sense that they were trying to connect with him.
However, since lockdown Caring Homes have focused on safety over the quality of life. No one advocated for those with dementia -
who spent 18 months being cared for by staff in masks. The home itself also has staff shortages now - regrettable but this has meant a reduction in care standards. For example, he was found in another resident's clothes, his stick broke and no one informed me until I visited and communication has almost exclusively only happened when we initiated it.
He is not getting the value of care he is paying for.
Individual staff do their best but sadly I get the sense that the shareholders are happy taking their cut rather than investing in providing good care e.g. installing a screen so that residents could have visits more safely during the lockdown.
(As an introvert no one accommodates him with 1-1 walks.)

We have always been pleased with the way Dad has been looked after and are fully confident that he is safe and secure. It has been difficult over this past year not being able to freely visit and be with residents in the day room, but the visits we have had have been well managed, and Dad seems fine.
The high turnover of staff is a concern, but the management team and all staff have done really well in uncertain times. The activities provided each day are well throughout and provide good stimulation for the residents. Thank you to all the team.

My husband was a resident at Wytham House for over two years. He was extremely well cared for during this time and the staff always showed him great kindness. I was able to visit him at any time which was much appreciated and so many of the staff, as well as residents, grew to be my friends so that
it became my second home. Wytham House is a first-class residential care home for those suffering from dementia. The residents are treated with respect and are always encouraged to join in the many activities wherever possible. The clinical care is excellent, the home is clean and very well managed. I would like to say a very big thank you to all the staff for looking after my lovely man so well.

My father was in the care home at Wytham House for 5 months before his death. The staff were exceptionally caring and respectful to him, treated with dignity. He was a retired GP and they treated him as such, never talking down to him. Clearly clean, well fed and attentive to him. He had very sore legs
on admission which were improved 100% by being cared for properly. Thank you! Excellent staff and end of life care exceptional.

From the first phone call and then a visit we immediately picked up 'good vibes' and felt reassured we had found the right place. With speed and efficiency, everything was organised for Mum to move and settle into the wonderful calm and caring environment. The staff are attentive, quickly picking up
on what 'works' for Mum to make her feel safe and care for all her needs. It is obvious when visiting, staff really get to know each patient, their individual needs and requirements dealing with each in a caring, sensitive and personal manner. We are constantly kept informed of how Mum is doing and included in discussions of her care plan etc.
Wytham House has also been wonderful for my 93-year-old Father-in-law who visits his wife regularly and often has lunch with her. After 73 years of never being apart, it was obviously a huge wrench for him. In his own words "she couldn't be in a better place, they look after her so well', it is a great comfort to him to see how content and well cared for she is.

My 93-year-old father-in-law had a nasty fall and on his discharge from hospital (which was far too soon), we felt he wasn't able to go home, so we looked for some respite care. We are so glad that Wytham House had availability to look after him (at very short notice). They were so helpful with this
and he went to stay there for 6 weeks.
On arrival, he was quite poorly – the fall had left him badly cut and bruised along with being very shaken and confused. However, the staff were all so friendly and welcoming that he soon settled in. His room was spotlessly clean, bright and fresh – with a lovely view of the garden and woodlands. He particularly liked the food – which all smelled lovely and looked very fresh and appetising.
We can't fault the care they gave to him. It is a testament to them that his cuts and bruises healed very quickly and he regained his confidence enough so that within weeks was well enough to be almost back to his old self.
I would highly recommend Wytham House to anyone.

The review to admit my mother from hospital was very comprehensive. Atmosphere at the care home was lovely and the caring for my mother was very attentive. The room was very airy, clean and comfortable. The food was surprisingly good and the flexibility in terms of the resident's needs were delivered
without fuss. The nursing staff were exceptional in terms of knowledge and the home felt safe and comfortable for all. I would have no hesitation to recommend.

My husband spent the last 16 months of his life at Wytham House. During that time his condition steadily deteriorated but the loving care and professional attention by the staff was superb. Every member of staff including the catering and housekeeping personnel always treated him as a human being who
needed help and not as simply a nuisance who had to be kept clean and quiet. Any outbursts on his part were met with calmness and sympathetic patience while a solution to solve the source of his distress was sought. When the end came the support for myself and family was excellent and helped us through an emotionally difficult time.

My 93-year-old mother had been a resident at Wytham House for a year until February this year when sadly she passed away. During the time she was at Wytham House, she had been looked after very well. All the staff were very kind and considerate to her, taking into account her personality and likes/dislikes
and always seemed to make time for her. I was made to feel welcome whatever time of day I visited the home and never felt in the way. I felt very reassured that my mother was in the best hands she could be at that stage of her life. A big "thank you" to the staff at Wytham House.

My very old father entered the home for a two-week respite, which we are now converting to permanent residency. He is not a particularly difficult or demanding resident, since he sleeps a lot, stays in his room, and doesn't take part in any activities. The staff have been unfailingly kind and patient
with him, adjusting as far as they can to his needs, and allowing him to retain his dignity. The home is very welcoming of visitors and concerned to help them; my wife was impressed by the sense that all the people she met, from the receptionist to a random passing maintenance person, were keen to project a positive image of the home, which is always a key sign of an institution that is working well, and a credit to the management. The physical design of the rooms and the public areas is excellent. The outside environment is exceptionally pleasant. Travel into Oxford by bus is very convenient.

Wytham House has provided excellent care for my father since he arrived one year ago. Staff are always helpful, polite and make themselves available when we have questions. The food looks tasty and varied, and my father likes it. His room and all areas of the home are nicely furnished, his room is spacious
with plenty of natural light, storage etc. The security arrangements seem to be fit for purpose and working well, parking is easy and near the entrance. Finance Dept is clear, prompt and helpful when we have had payment queries. Nursing staff are always ready to update us on my father's health, the staff handled a week-long hospital stay by my father very efficiently and were helpful with updates on his situation. There is a good activities programme on offer, there are really nice communal areas and facilities for visitors eg a comfortable lounge, cinema, children's play area, garden sitting area, leafy spacious grounds, tea and cake is available. It is always clean and tidy.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.684)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.684) out of 10 for Wytham House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.559 for Wytham House is calculated as follows: ( (35 Excellents x 5) + (22 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.559
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.125 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Wytham House is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.625
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
