Avonmere Care Home is located in Downend, South Gloucestershire, near the Willy Wicket Inn on the northern outskirts of Bristol, easily accessible from the M32, M4 and M5. The home offers respite and residential care spans three floors, with one dedicated to dementia care.

Avonmere features its own hair salon, therapy suite and minibus as well as a beautiful garden for residents to enjoy and the home welcomes couples and their companions, where their well-being, comfort and happiness are of utmost importance.

Staff focus on meeting the needs of each resident, ensuring physical and emotional well-being for a fulfilling and happy quality of life. Recognising the potential stress of a late-life change, such as moving from a family home, they strive to make the transition as smooth as possible, offering peace of mind to all involved.

Wellbeing is supported through various physical, social and psychological activities. Such as regular exercise classes, (including tai chi and Pilates), animal therapy, live entertainment and community events. Mini bus trips occur once a week, taking the residents to well loved destinations including the local driving range, cafes, the zoo and local swimming pool. One to one activities are offered to those who wish to avoid group activities.

Regular updates on the home's activities are shared on the Facebook page and the new wellbeing app called Relish, fostering connections between the team, residents and their loved ones.

For those seeking dementia care homes in Bristol, Avonmere may be the ideal choice. Expert staff are trained to cater to residents with various care requirements. Rigorous staff selection and thorough training guarantee that residents living with dementia receive the highest quality care.

My mum has been living in Avonmere for the past 3 years up until November last year my father was there also. She is very happy and enjoys all the activities especially seeing the variety of animals that come in from dogs and ponies to chick's and snakes! She lives on the memory floor and is so well
looked after by the staff. They are all so friendly and helpful and love having her there. Her quality of life is exemporely for a lady of 91! I would highly recommend this delightful care home.

My Mother has been in full-time care at Avonmere Residential Care Home for 18 months and I would like to extend my thanks and praise to all the staff who look after her. The range of activities to help with mind, body and soul is wonderful and everyone is very caring, helpful and always a good sense
of humour which is often required when residents are not always co-operative.

Since my Mum came to live at Avonmere Care home last November, we can't fault it at all. The staff are all so lovely and caring, the entertainment and outings are excellent along with the food which looks amazing.
Mum recently had a fall, we were told immediately and had further phone calls keeping

Dad moved into Avonmere in February 2025. His need for a care home occurred very suddenly which was a shock not only for him but for myself and my mother. From the initial scouting visit to the present day we have only been met and treated with kindness, enthusiasm, care and attention at every visit.
We
couldn't have wished for a nicer care home for dad, he has plenty of activities to attend, he has a beautiful room with ensuite and a lovely view of the garden from his window. All of his needs are met with kindness and dignity and nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff whether it be maintenance/housekeeping/kitchen activities staff, the carers, reception staff or Management. Mum and I always look forward to our visits and enjoy taking part in the activities and talking with the various staff. I highly recommend Avonmere for your loved ones.

My Grandma came to Avonmere after leaving her home of 30 years after a decline in physical and mental health. The journey to this point was not an easy one but she fit right in at Avonmere. The quality of the home is amazing, as are the staff and facilities. Honestly, my grandma is not always the easiest
person to deal with, especially with dementia. However the staff have the patience of saints and always treat her with respect and care even when things must be testing. The only room for improvement for me is sometimes there is a lapse in communication meaning that conversations sometimes need to be had with different members of staff in different roles. I do appreciate however that this is much the same in all walks of life as we're all human.

I viewed many care homes before visiting Avonmere. Once I walked into Avonmere it had a complete different feel to it and almost like a hotel with the hot and cold drinks situated behind the reception desk. The rooms are all spotless and lots of rooms to sit including a bar and library all beautifully
decorated. The outside garden has lots of comfy seats and there is a large balcony upstairs again with seats and parasols.
All staff are amazing from Sam the manager who gets things done to the friendly receptionists, catering staff, Bee the entertainments manager, the nurses, catering staff and the seniors who take great care of mums medical needs
My mum is on the dementia floor and is really happy there as there's always a full day of activities plus trips out in their own bus. Bee and her team encourage residents to follow their hobbies eg golf, art, church, Pilates and lots of eve parties
My mum didn't want to go into a home but tells me she's happy and the staff are very kind
Reply from Samantha Baronian, Home Manager at Avonmere Care Home - Avery HealthcareThank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and heartfelt review. Your kind words genuinely mean so much to all of us here at Avonmere.

It's wonderful to hear that you felt something special as soon as you walked through our doors. We work very hard to create a warm, welcoming environment that feels comfortable, homely, and uplifting for both residents and their families, so your comments are incredibly rewarding to read.

I'm especially pleased to hear how happy your mum has become with us. We understand how difficult the decision to move into a care home can be, and it means the world to know she now feels settled, supported, and cared for by our team.

Thank you also for recognising so many members of staff across the home. Bea and the activities team are so passionate about helping residents continue enjoying their hobbies, interests, and social lives, and the nursing and care teams work tirelessly every day to provide the very best care possible.

Nobody wants to think of putting a loved one into a care home ! But sometimes there is no option. A very dear friend of mine was sadly amittted to hospital in November 2025 . Over night he was discharged , I knew he was to frail to return home so I promised to find him a 5 star hotel to recover . That's
when after visiting other places I found Avonmere . Straight away I knew he would love it . Sam the manager pulled out all the stops to get him accesed in hospital the next day and move straight in . Initially it was only for respite. But he loved the care / fuss and attention so much he didn't want to leave. He's now been there 5 months and has come on so much . The staff are so kind, and attentive. We've had the odd problem but Sam is always there to listen and sort out immediately. They cater for everyone's needs even with activities. They've even taken my friend to watch he's beloved football team play . I've had dealings with our care homes in the past . This one is outstanding
Reply from Samantha Baronian, Home Manager at Avonmere Care Home - Avery HealthcareThank you so much for your incredibly kind words. Reading your message truly means a lot to me and to the whole team here at Avonmere.
We always aim to make Avonmere feel like a home rather than just a care setting, so hearing that he enjoys the care, attention, activities, and little bits of fuss means the world to us. The football trip was definitely a highlight for everyone involved!

Thank you as well for your trust, support, and understanding. It's lovely families and friends like you who make what we do so rewarding.

I will make sure your kind comments are shared with the whole team, as they work incredibly hard every single day and will be so proud to hear this feedback

My 89 year old mother, has just moved into Avonmere from an extra care facility and the difference is uncomparable. She was rapidly deteriorating at her previous place due to food and care quality. She's almost like a different person and has only been at Avonmere a week. The care staff are all absolutely
wonderful, nothing is a problem, they are bright, cheery and everyone came too mum's room and introduced themselves, which shows how kind and caring they are. The food is absolutely superb and the 5 star chef really pulls out all the stops. There is so much going on there It's a joy to visit. It's lovely sitting in the well manicured gardens on a sunny day. Let's not forget the manager and her excellent admin staff, everyone plays an important part at Avonmere. Mum is a different person now and feels very safe and secure and this is all due to everyone at Avonmere.

My husband has Parkinsons disease with dementia and in November 2024 he was admitted to Avonmere care home because of my own health issues. The care he has received at Avonmere has been amazing. The care staff are really fun, friendly, patient & caring & he loves to chat with them. In fact, all
the staff we've seen on site are welcoming and helpful. The building itself is very light & clean and aesthetically pleasing with a library, games room, several comfortable lounges and an immaculate private dining room in addition to the two main ones. The food is very good, especially the home made cakes! There is always something going on at Avonmere to entertain or involve the residents in activities. There is a games room, library, cinema. salon & several comfortable lounges to use too. My husband will be coming home soon, but we will really miss everyone.

My Dad has recently moved into Avonmere Care home . He's settled in really well thanks to all the professional and compassionate staff. The environment is light and airy and there are plenty of staff to manage the residents needs, which are well catered for.
The team manages a great age-appropriate
activity schedule which is well attended and keeps everyone happy.

Review from I F (Daughter-in-law of Resident) published on 29 November 2024 Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My mother-in-law has been a resident here for over six years, probably currently the longest-standing resident. She has lived there through Covid and many management changes, but throughout this, we have had no cause to fault her care. She has, in the past, benefited greatly from the activities and
although her involvement in these has declined greatly over the last year or so, she still benefits from the social aspects of residing here.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.828) out of 10 for Avonmere Care Home - Avery Healthcare is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.828 for Avonmere Care Home - Avery Healthcare is calculated as follows: ( (234 Excellents x 5) + (34 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 274 Ratings = 4.828
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Avonmere Care Home - Avery Healthcare is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
