Southwell Court is located in a lovely residential area in the village of Melbourn, near Royston on the border of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. The home provides daycare, short-term, respite care and longer term care and support for up to 40 people.

The comfortable bedrooms have ensuite facilities; there are large, separate communal lounges, a dining room, hair salon and adapted bathrooms. There are large gardens, accessible from the ground floor bedrooms, perfect for enjoying the sunny weather when possible.

The residents enjoy freshly cooked, healthy meals. Most residents choose to eat together in the dining room, while others choose to eat in the comfort of their own bedrooms. There is also a private dining room, ideal for special occasions such as birthdays or family occasions.

The home has a regular and fun-filled activities schedule provided by Activity Co-Ordinators. These activities are planned and tailored to residents' likes and interests with group and individual events taking place daily. Being person-centred is at the heart of everything the team does, and they believe it is important to know residents and what matters to them, to provide the true atmosphere of home whilst they are in the team's care.

The team is keen to be a part of the local community and often has open days, charity days and fetes where they welcome friends from the local area to visit the lovely home.

My mum has been a resident for a few months. She moved into the home reluctantly after having had a stroke and no longer being able to care for herself. Mum is treated with care and dignity always. The staff are kind and caring, whilst still remaining professional. They encourage Mum to join in and
mix with other residents. Mum says the food is excellent. The new manager is everything you would hope a home manager would be. She is kind and listens to the families concerns, and has done everything we have asked in a bid to make Mums stay more fulfilling.

My father has just moved into Southwell Court and it is a beautiful, happy place and the carers are wonderful. The home is of the highest standard in every way. My father was only in there for one day and then they had lockdown and we can't visit but he is very happy and I am not worried as much as
I know he is being well looked after and is safe and happy. Thank you.

It is a pleasure to visit as the care home is light, bright and airy always immaculately clean and the staff are wonderful, caring and very approachable. The food is excellent and tastefully presented and served.

After visiting my friend recently who has moved to Southwell Court I was absolutely amazed at what a beautiful home this is. Very well decorated and such friendly staff, I was made to feel right at home. Home from home if you will. Rooms are wonderful with showers, lots of nice touches such as hair
salon and even a cinema room!

Heartily recommend this to anyone thinking of placing a loved one in care in this area.

Southwell Court has been beautifully renovated. I love the way the building is what I would call 'quirky'. The rooms are set in groups of about 6, rather than in big long corridors. The Manager and her staff were very friendly, caring and fun to be around. I was very concerned leaving my mother in law
at it was her first time in respite and she did not want to go! She settled well, ate very well and even joined in and socialised (which is not her style). The food looked amazing. They had daily papers, she had her hair done and saw the chiropodist during her 10-day stay. I was so pleased with how smoothly her visit went and I could not recommend the place more. 5 stars to them!

I am very pleased with how my Mother and I have been treated by all the staff. They have all been excellent in every way. Nothing has been too much trouble. The home is welcoming at the front door. My Mother's room is lovely, clean and nicely fitted out. The meals are of a very high standard, served
in a pleasant, quiet dining room. My Mother has lived in three other care homes and this is the best.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.620)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.620) out of 10 for Southwell Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.795 for Southwell Court is calculated as follows: ( (132 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 156 Ratings = 4.795
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Southwell Court is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
