My mother-in-law wanted to spend time with my father-in-law (of course!) so joined him for a couple of weeks respite. She is registered disabled and had been managing at the flat with assistance - but she was just managing, not really living.
She enjoyed her 2 weeks so much that she decided she wanted to stay on a permanent basis. Luckily we could arrange that for her.
It is so wonderful that she is so well cared for - she is encouraged to eat and doesn't need to worry about a thing - meals cooked (BBQs!), medication given, laundry done, bathrooms cleaned and beds made. She gets to spend time with my father-in-law - as they've done for 54 years. They can watch films, eat together, complete activities together and go for a coffee together. There will be day trips too once this lockdown is over.
She's walking more too as her confidence grows. She feels like she's on a permanent holiday and that can't be a bad thing at all!

I have worked for Care UK for most of my adult life, starting out as a healthcare assistant and progressing to my current role as Home Manager. With encouragement from colleagues, I also completed my nursing degree as a mature student.
Being able to work my way up and gain my qualifications (which also include NVQs in health and social care and leadership and management) has been a huge achievement for me and a big career highlight.
In this role, you need to be able to communicate well and have strong leadership and planning skills. Working as a team also means you have to be good at motivating people. It is also important to have a good grasp of budgets, and it is essential to be clear about safeguarding policies and procedures.
The work we do really does make a difference, and that fills me with immense pride. It feels great when we get positive feedback from relatives who can see that their loved ones are receiving the quality care they need.
My favourite part of the day is the time I’m able to spend having a coffee, cake and a chat with residents. Seeing everyone get along well and share special moments really does brighten up each day.
Outside of work, I love to travel and spend time with my children and grandchildren.
