My father recently stayed at the Barchester Cumberland Grange Care Home for a ten-day period of respite. The contact with the management team was totally professional and helpful throughout. My father has a complex medical condition, which required monitoring, and this was his first time away from his own home and family for respite care. The understanding of his condition was good, with all involved making sure he was relaxed in this new environment. All the staff who were involved in his care were fantastic, making sure he was included in as many activities as possible to enable him to enjoy his stay. The meals were varied and the quality excellent. The staff maintained good contact with us, reassuring me throughout his stay, that he was at the centre of their care. During his stay, I was able to witness him interacting with many of the other residents during the activities. I cannot fault the Cumberland Grange in any way and want to say a big thank you to all the staff, at all levels, for everything.

My relative has been at Barchester Cumberland Grange Care Home for two years now. He is very settled and well cared for. The staff understand his changing needs and work well to meet them.
All members of the team, including maintenance, administration, laundry, catering and management as well as the carers themselves, are welcoming, friendly, helpful and kind. They all know my relative well and understand his needs.
They are always approachable and take time to listen to any concerns or updates and try to resolve any issues promptly.
The staff support my relative to contact me by telephone if he requests this. They also take time to update me by telephone on any important matters.

Activities are well-run and trips out occur weekly. Larger events occur throughout the year and are always well attended. The catering and entertainment are excellent and well received by residents and families alike. These events demonstrate the great teamwork shown by staff at Cumberland Grange.

I first visited Cumberland Grange a year ago when looking for a care home for my sister who suffers from Dementia.
The initial visit was very encouraging. The staff were friendly and professional. The facility is well-designed and the personal rooms are large and bright as are the welcoming community areas. Extra facilities such as an on-site visiting hairdresser, dentist and optician are added bonuses.
The staff are kind and caring. There are a wide variety of activities on offer and she can be as involved as she wants. The meals are delicious.
As I live a long way away weekly phone calls with the staff and my sister are important. We have also provided my sister with a tablet to help keep in contact.

I would definitely recommend visiting this care home to see if it will suit your needs.

My mum has come to Cumberland Grange to live!
It is such a vibrant home. There are lots of activities to enjoy. She enjoys her time at the home and the trips out.

All staff have training in dementia and it shows. The residents are treated with respect and dignity. Staff are caring, helpful and patient. They are genuinely interested in my mum's well-being. She is loved and is happy and settled.

After a few weeks of settling down, Mummy is really enjoying life at Barchester Cumberland Grange Care Home. Lots of activities: singing, pub trips, flower arranging, entertainers and more, cerebral politics and pastries. Daily routines are flexed to her needs and the attention of the staff and management to her medical and care needs is great (local GP visits weekly). I visit (often with friends) and all have remarked on how "not" like a care home it looks and feels. There is a friendly and happy atmosphere in the cafe and sitting rooms; TVs and music and endless tea, coffee and cake as well as a cinema room which doubles for rugby, football and tennis on a giant screen. Individual rooms are spacious and tailored to accommodate personal pictures and furniture and all have comfy chairs and top-class TV. Dining is top-notch and the home has organised in-house dentists, opticians and hearing tests. All in all, it's a place to live: make new friends, have old friends to visit or just have quiet time.

My father stayed at a property for respite care and we could not fault the care and attention he was given.
From the initial contact, the staff ensured they knew him and his needs. The welcome was warm and we felt safe in the knowledge he would be well cared for.

Whilst it costs more than some, it has a smart hotel feel, which is what we needed for the time he was there.

Exceptional! Barchester Cumberland Grange Care Home has surpassed my expectations and hopes of what a residential home can offer. In terms of the building, furniture, decor etc. it resembles a five-star hotel. The food is excellent, restaurant quality and the cakes are really delicious! The range of activities, both in the home and off-site, is excellent, including welcoming the local community for a dog parade to realise a resident's dream. When we first visited, we were really impressed by the warm, welcoming attitude of all the staff. This has continued in every encounter we've had. I'm in awe of the staff who are respectful of, warm and compassionate with the residents. They are also really welcoming of family and friends and dogs! My mother is not an easy character and it is difficult to put into words how supportive the staff at Cumberland Grange have been to my mother and to me. I feel like the weight of caring for her has been lifted from me.

Cumberland Grange is a new facility, well-designed with good space and decor. However, the best thing about Cumberland is the genuinely caring staff and the range of activities on offer. Staff appear to love their work, I have seen smiles, affection and gentle safe touch (holding hands with residents, gentle hugs, asking residents questions about their lives before Cumberland, etc).

Activities are varied with gentle exercise, music, pets visiting and poetry. The activities are held in different spaces around the home including the memory lane area (for those residents diagnosed with dementia) so that the residents from different areas of the home connect with each other. Residents have input and are encouraged to suggest ideas for activities. Connections with the local community are also encouraged with a parent and baby group meeting onsite weekly.

The activities at Barchester Cumberland Grange Care Home are outstanding. They are imaginative, creative, diverse and inclusive at every level. Also, there is a regular visit from an Anna Chaplain. This ministry thrives in the Exeter diocese and attends to the spiritual welfare of residents in care homes.

Visitors and family members are welcome to take part in all activities with their loved ones. It is a warm and lively atmosphere in the home, expertly coordinated by the events leader.

My mother moved to Barchester Cumberland Grange Care Home ten months ago, her dementia meant life at home was becoming very challenging.
We were all apprehensive about the move but all Mum's concerns had soon disappeared.
She is on the residential floor at the moment but knowing that when the time comes to move to memory lane she will be known by the staff which will make the transition so much easier.
The staff are amazing, so caring and cheerful, providing and accommodating all Mum's needs, even going to the library to choose her large print books.
As a private person, she was wary of joining in activities and with dietary requirements, was concerned they wouldn't be able to meet her needs.
How wonderful now to see on the home's social media pages photos of Mum choosing to join in many of the varied activities planned each week and the amazing chef who creates so many personalised dishes for her.

The outcome for us all has exceeded our expectations and we look forward to our visits as we feel very included too.

My mother-in-law moved in April 2023, she has dementia and was struggling at home. She is now much happier and seems to enjoy life again. Being a gluten-free pescatarian food has always been an issue, but the chef has been so good and kind to her. The staff really seem to care about the residents and put on so much entertainment, so there is something for everyone.

It’s such a relief that we know he’s being taken care of in a five-star care home; it’s beautiful and has such lovely staff - 1st class.
I had never been to a care home until August this year, and I never imagined that it would be like a hotel when you are inside - such beautiful decor, and the food is amazing.
The 2nd year anniversary last week was fantastic; such a lot of effort went into this.
I’m looking forward to the Christmas events.

My father-in-law is so happy and looks better than he was six months ago; he is 95 - it’s all to do with the care he is getting and the environment; it’s really amazing.

My dad is a resident at Cumberland Grange. He has been there for seven months and looks so much better than he did when he was living at home. I am so impressed with the staff - all so happy, helpful and loving. They had a party to celebrate two years of being open; it was such a great party - I was very impressed. The food is good, and the building and garden are lovely. I think it's the best care home in Exeter.

My 95 year old father had a wonderful 2-week respite care in Exeter. First impressions of Cumberland Grange was that it is a bright airy welcoming place. All the staff were friendly and professional. Dad’s room was clean with a lovely big window overlooking the garden. It all looked so fresh and clean. The main worry as always when putting a loved relative in a home - is will they like it - well Dad loved it he couldn’t stop talking about how everything from his room, the food, the staff were first class he really perked up so much so that I was able to finally get a good night's sleep knowing that he was safe and cared for. Well done to the team.

I do enjoy living in Cumberland Grange Care Home, it has made a difference in my life because I am nearly 98. An age I never thought I would make. I no longer need to shop for food or cook or clean my room. I have arthritis in my hands and I can no longer sew but a member of staff looks after my clothes. One thing that amuses me is that they regularly check to see if I am still alive. Living here is like one long holiday. I really love living at Cumberland Grange.

I was here for two weeks of respite (from 23rd January to 6th February 2023) I found this very restful and enjoyable, particularly after a nasty fall at home back in the summer and then at a stay in the local hospital (in Exeter) followed by a fairly long stay in Sidmouth hospital. I was progressing fairly well, slowly and then a visit to one of my daughters near Cambridge, I developed Flu which put me in Bedford hospital for Christmas! Hence being here for respite.

Avril
Avril Job Title:Resident AmbassadorJoined: 2022

Hello there, I’m Avril, one of the Resident Ambassadors here at Cumberland Grange. Welcome to our home!

I came to Cumberland Grange in August 2022 after relocating from another care home just outside of London. My sister-in-law who lives in Exeter told me about Cumberland Grange, and lo and behold, I arrived here and felt very lucky to call this my new home. At this time, it hadn’t been open long and I was welcomed with opened arms and settled very quickly.

This is no ordinary care home here at Cumberland, we have a beautiful home, the team is a happy team, and us residents are a great bunch.

Chris EnglishJob Title:Head Chef

Hi, I'm Chris, Head Chef here at Cumberland Grange.

I have a wealth of experience in the hospitality sector, having previously worked in some of Devon's most established restaurants and gastro pubs. My passion is using locally sourced food, and creating daily menus that reflect the great variety of seasonal produce available. Overseeing the kitchen I ensure that every meal my team prepares is always freshly home-cooked, served and presented with care.

I enjoy getting to know all of our new residents, ensuring that I understand their likes, dislikes and preferences and aiming to incorporate all of these into our menu selections. Along with my kitchen team, we strive to create a menu that delivers the home-from-home dining experience that everyone living with us genuinely enjoys.

Outside of work, my passion for cooking continues and I enjoy experimenting with new flavours and recipes for my smoker and BBQ and absolutely love all things baking.

We also have groups which happen every week, mostly lead by our residents, including Poetry Club, Gardening Club, Politics and Pastries, Cumberland Grange Choir and Knit and Natter.

We have monthly resident meetings where we discuss life at Cumberland Grange. We talk about the activities that we currently run, including activities that our residents would like us to incorporate into the planner.
