My mother needed respite care after a period of illness and I’m pleased to say she’s fully recovered and back in rude health. Her recovery is very much down to the care and attention she received from the marvelous staff at Hazel Lodge, their good humor and patience are infectious and very much set
the tone for this home. My mum received some truly excellent care, at 90 she’s already earmarked a return if she needs support in the future. Really faultless experience.
Reply from Sharon Ward, Home Services Advisor at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a wonderful review. It was an absolute pleasure having Mum stay with us and great to see her bounce back and return home. We look forward to seeing her again really soon, maybe at our community café or possibly for lunch with her Hazel Lodge friends who I'm sure would love to see her.

We were welcomed and made to feel at home in a warm and extremely comfortable environment. The staff were polite and attentive.
The room was large, bright and with a lovely garden view.
All together the experience was made to feel like being cared for in a great place.

I went to Hazel Lodge for a week's respite care, after having a rather traumatic year. I felt very well looked after and enjoyed meals with other residents and the entertainment and exercises laid on. My room was comfortable, though the lighting was not good for reading. I also feel that the wet room
shower is a bit unnerving without a seat. I did find that waste bins were not emptied during the week. Overall, a very pleasant time.
Reply from Sharon Ward, Home Services Advisor at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeThank you for leaving us this review and providing valuable feedback following on from your stay. We do have shower chairs available if residents need them and I will certainly feedback about the other points raised. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Hazel Lodge provided excellent care for my father. The home was beautifully furnished and spotless. All members of staff were so caring, friendly and respectful of my father and his needs. I would certainly recommend Hazel Lodge. My father is already booked in for more respite in the new year. Thank
you to all the staff for making my father's stay a happy one.
Reply from Sharon Ward, Home Services Advisor at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and look forward to seeing you both again when Dad returns for his respite.

My father has been a resident at Hazel Lodge since September, following a respite stay earlier in the year. I have been impressed by the care and understanding shown by the staff, helping him come to terms with leaving his own home. I am on first-name terms with them myself as they are equally welcoming
to me as a visitor. On several occasions, I have had a meal with him in the lovely dining room or coffee in the bistro where he meets with other residents to chat and form new relationships.
He has a large, light room with a spacious bathroom and is able to participate in the varied forms of entertainment available every day.
Hazel Lodge is modern and well-furnished but still manages to create a comfortable friendly atmosphere and I feel that my father couldn’t be in better hands.
Reply from Sharon Ward, Home Services Advisor at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to leave us this really lovely review and providing us with your feedback. It is great to have Dad back with us and to see him settling into his new home and making new friends. If there is anything that you or Dad feel we could do to improve the experience, especially on the couple of things that we haven't scored as high on then please do let me know.

Having been my mother’s carer for nearly two years, it was a huge change for us both to adapt. For my mum to leave her home and belongings, knowing she couldn’t go back and for me to let go of a lot of responsibilities and leave the staff at the care home to look after her. Over the summer, we have
both adapted well to our new lives, thanks to all the staff in the care home! I can highly recommend this home to anyone considering doing this. I have my life back, and I can see Mum anytime I like and join in with activities with her and enjoy meals together! I am so pleased I made such a difficult decision. Thanks to everyone for their care.
Reply from Sharon Ward, Home Services Advisor at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeWe really appreciate you providing this valuable feedback about your experience since Mum has moved into the home. It would be great to arrange to have a catch-up when you're free so that we can understand and try to improve on things that maybe haven't quite met expectations. Once again, thank you for taking the time to leave this review, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Just enjoyed the first year celebration of this amazing care home. My mother has been here for 6 months and I can honestly say it is wonderful. The facilities are great - lovely room, great communal rooms with lots going on and she reports ‘great food’ but what really makes this place fantastic are
the staff. The care, understanding and companionship she has goes way beyond anything I could have hoped for. Thank you everyone.

Hazel Lodge is a first-class care home and I could not fault the wonderful staff or luxurious facilities. From the moment I contacted the team to arrange respite care for my mum following her hip replacement until she left a couple of months later, everyone acted with care, courtesy and utmost professionalism.
Nothing was too much trouble. I felt reassured knowing that she was in safe, caring hands. The spacious facilities are elegant, very clean, yet also warm and cosy - a perfect home from home. The wide range of social activities also helped Mum gain new friends and newfound confidence. She didn't want to leave! If I had to be picky, we felt that the quality of the food was a bit hit-and-miss. But many, many thanks to the whole team at Hazel Lodge. We were very lucky to have found you.
Reply from Sharon Ward, Home Services Advisor at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeWe really do appreciate you giving us your feedback following on from mum's stay, we will certainly look into your comments regarding some of the mealtime experiences and feedback this back to the chef. We're so pleased Mum enjoyed her stay and we look forward to her visiting when she moves into her new flat next year. Once again, thank you so much for your lovely review and for choosing Hazel Lodge.

Mum came to Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home for respite when her needs of help at home became too much for me to manage.
We were all made very welcome and offered great support emotionally at a difficult time.
The care staff were so kind and understanding when at times Mum didn’t show great enthusiasm
at being there!
We celebrated her 91st birthday with afternoon tea very kindly provided by Hazel Lodge which included saying cheers with a glass of preschool. A memorable time for us all.
Thank you to Hazel Lodge and all the staff for everything you did for Mum and being so understanding to all her family.

After three weeks of respite care, my mother was ready to go home. Both she and I felt quite sad as her stay at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home had been such a wonderful break for her. This is an inspiring care home; as a purpose-built facility, everything is laid out with residents and guests in
mind. The rooms, lounges and dining areas are immaculate and the level of care is exceptional. If my lovely mum ever needs a care home again, this is the only place I would want her to be. Beautiful!

The staff were all lovely and caring to the highest standard. Being disabled was not happy with a heavy wet room door. Why do you have to have a fire door when you already have one on the bedroom? Also, heavy water jugs are far too heavy for older people to cope with, if broken could cause an accident
being glass. Having made these comments I would be happy to return to Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home, as I appreciate it has teething problems. Would have been nice to have newspapers and sweet trolley.
Reply from Caroline Pullleyn, General Manager at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeThank you for your lovely review. I will take forward your suggestion about the water jugs being so heavy and the risks. In terms of the newspaper and sweet trolley, both are really good idea. Just to let you know we are now getting a weekly paper to see how the residents like this.
Kind regards
Caroline

My mother came into Hazel Lodge on short-term care at the beginning of May following a collapsed vertebrae. Once the family had all seen it and totally approved in every respect it didn't take much persuading for her to accept that this was the best place for her long term. It is like a 5-star hotel
but with the total care and respect of an extended family. The staff on all levels go out of their way to accommodate whatever is needed, and to assure the residents are happy and healthy, nothing is too much trouble. Whereas she was spending her days on her own with only the TV as company she now has a full daily schedule with something going on every day, Mum tells us all that she is so busy with all the first-class entertainment and thoroughly enjoying it. A perfect home.

I went into Hazel Lodge for two weeks of respite care having recently lost my wife. The staff were very sympathetic to my position and offered care and comfort whenever I required it. The home has only recently opened (November 2022) and although it will happily cater for more residents, everything
looks promising as time goes by. If I were looking for further respite or full-time care in the future I wouldn't hesitate to return to Hazel Lodge Care Home.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.792) out of 10 for Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.792 for Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (213 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 260 Ratings = 4.792
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
