My 90 year old mother has recently completed a 28 day respite stay here.
The care has been exceptional.
Nothing has been too much trouble.
Being of the older generation, mum improved from feeling very poorly, post a shoulder replacement, to independently making her bed and walking around.
She has
been encouraged and supported by a variety of members of staff.
The staff were all welcoming and friendly, no matter how busy they were.
Taxi's were ordered to take mum to post surgery appointments and a private lunch organised when she had some special visitors.
On the day she left, she walked confidently, looked well rested and was eager to get back to her own flat.
Thank you.

My mother is a very private person and has been very independent her whole life. My father passed away in 2024 and unfortunately in 2025 the care home which my parents were in had closed. With having to move to a new care provider and being on her own mum has become very depressed and feels alone in
a strange environment, which has caused her to almost retract into herself. I think mum could do with some sort of therapy. I feel mum has decided she hasn't a place in this world or a reason to live and feels the guilt of my fathers passing is the reason not to accept she is still living. I am hoping for assistance finding help with getting a result to resolve this situation.
Reply from Rhona Sievewright, General Manager at Somer Valley HouseThank you very much for your review. It was lovely speaking with you recently & I truly appreciate the opportunity to work together in supporting your mum. As we discussed recently, we both recognise that your mum hasn't quite been herself lately and we are committed to helping her rediscover her "sparkle" that is so important to her & you. We will be gently encouraging meaningful engagement through her faith, including Church visits, as well as creating opportunities here at Somer Valley House for her to share her love of France, whether through food, language, or reminiscing about her experiences. A key focus for us will also be supporting her in building genuine friendships, so she feels more connected and comfortable in her surroundings. Alongside this, we will continue to work closely with external professionals to ensure she receives the right support for her low mood. Your insight & involvement are incredibly valuable to us & we warmly welcome any further suggestions.

My sister had a respite stay at this home last summer and has now returned to them for a permanent stay. This home is a breath of fresh air with a lovely atmosphere from the minute you walk through the door. The care team are wonderful, my sister is well fed, well looked after and treated with the upmost
dignity. They also make me feel very welcome on every visit and I'm always offered drinks and cakes and the option to join her in the activities or join her to enjoy the entertainment. I cannot thank them enough.

After my mother returned home from a hip replacement, we were unfortunately faced with a flood in her property. It was a traumatic time, and she urgently needed alternative accommodation, as she wasn't able to manage on her own.
Until then, I hadn't really considered a care home for short-term respite
- but discovering Sommer Valley House changed everything.
From the very first introduction, led by Emma, the support we received (alongside her home insurance and some self-funding) was exceptional. The team took the time to understand my mother's personality and needs, and tailored her stay perfectly.
The staff at Sommer Valley House - too many to name individually - were outstanding. Emma's guidance and genuine care stood out, and the entire team created a warm, supportive environment within a truly state-of-the-art facility.
Thank you for giving my mother such a positive and memorable experience. She has already said she would love to return for regular day visits.
Reply from Emma Curtain, Customer Relationship Manager at Somer Valley HouseThank you so much for such a wonderful and complimentary review. We are so pleased that we could help your Mother in her emergency situation and it was our absolute pleasure to do so. I will pass on to the whole team that you found them outstanding in creating a warm and supportive environment. We are so looking forward to welcoming your Mum back when she comes in to visit her new friends. Thank you again for such kind words, it was our absolute privilege to have looked after you Mum here at Somer Valley House.

I never fail to be impressed at Somer Valley and rate it excellent in all areas. All the staff have been helpful and understanding. It is a pleasure to visit. The home is designed so that you can easily walk around it and therefore take exercise, even on a rainy day. There are plenty of places to sit
and have a coffee and a home made treat. It is great to see my mum being as independent as possible, with her own beautiful room, knowing that help is always at hand. The whole team are amazing.

Mum has only been in the home for 2 weeks but is settling in already. She didn't think she was ready to be in a home, but has soon realised how nice it is offering her everything she needs. Hopefully she will get to know other residents over the coming months. The staff are all fantastic, friendly

From my initial contact with Somer Valley I have felt that I have been listened to and that the care of my husband really mattered. The staff member on reception was bubbly and welcoming. Another staff member who visited us put my mind at rest and all the team have shown love, care and enthusiasm for

Our family cannot praise Somer Valley House highly enough.
The Home itself is new and stylish to the point of being luxurious. Mum's en-suite room is spacious, beautifully appointed and with an extremely comfortable bed. The daily menu is varied with good options and the food is of a high quality.
Most important of all though, each and every member of staff at Somer Valley House has just been so very friendly, kind, helpful and caring towards Mum which helped her settle in initially and which has since made her feel really safe and secure.
We are very grateful for, and appreciative of, everything that the lovely people at Somer Valley House have done for Mum since she moved in back in January 2025.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.846)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.846) out of 10 for Somer Valley House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 25 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.846 for Somer Valley House is calculated as follows: ( (257 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 293 Ratings = 4.846
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Somer Valley House is based on 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 66 registered maximum number of service users is 13.2, which has been reached with 24 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

As a lifelong resident of Midsomer Norton, I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the Somer Valley house adventure from the very beginning and have excitedly watched the progress of the building every week since the beginning of the year.
