Overall Experience

I spent 2 periods in Birchmere House for respite care while my wife had 2 cataract operations. Due to a TIA I had to return to B. H. a few days earlier than planned. I was welcomed back warmly and moved to the nursing floor to accommodate my additional needs. My main criticism is the delay in dealing with my severe diarrhoea during my 2nd stay, and while feeling particularly ill, I found the loud and persistent call bells very trying. I was particularly grateful for the courteous care and attention I had from the Bangladeshi carers who gave me my showers. Full marks to the chef and staff for the personal attention to my very strict dietary needs. I will readily recommend B. H to friends needing care

My Mother has been at Birchmere for 11 weeks and has finally settled. She has been made very welcome by all the staff.
Her room has been personalised by hanging her own pictures. The generally day to day house keeping is excellent. Also, cooking her favourite meals is never too much trouble.
The home has a lovely bistro where we can meet as a family and enjoy coffee and cake. She has particularly enjoyed the music events, from singers to classical quartets.
She also enjoys rides out in the Minibus.

She has experienced some uncertainties over the correct medication and subsequent timings, but hopefully this has now been resolved. The family feel that she is being cared for to a high standard.

Our dad moved into Birchmere House and we were understandably anxious about how he would cope with the change. The staff were extremely supportive from the beginning and did everything they could to help him settle in. It made a big difference to us as a family.

The atmosphere in the home is warm and welcoming and the staff always seem cheerful and approachable. The home itself is clean and comfortable, and there are activities and outings available which residents can join if they wish.

We really appreciate the way the staff treat him with patience and dignity, while also keeping us up to date with how he's getting on. Knowing our dad is safe, comfortable and well looked after gives us real peace of mind. We are very grateful to the whole team and would happily recommend Birchmere House to other families.

I was very impressed from the first time I walked in. Staff extremely friendly and helpfull. Carers were the same most of the time without the need for agency staff which enabled great rapports with the residents. The food was good quality with plenty of choice. Mum only attended a few activities but enjoyed the ones she did, especially she enjoyed the musical entertainment and singing along. My mum could be very dificult at times so thank you for your patience and care. I would highly recommend Birchmere House.

My mother came to this care home for pallative care due to being unable to stay at a hospice any longer we were a bit apprehensive but we shouldn't have worried. The staff were so welcoming, my mum was there for 10 days before she passed away. She loved it. Had her hair done, she loved the food. The pallative team cared for her every need. I can't thank the staff enough for looking after her, thank you x

My mother underwent a Hip operation which unfortunately had complications following a lengthy stay in Hospital she spent 6 weeks at Birchmere to allow full recovery prior to going home.
All the staff from Management to Carers were always very approachable, friendly + professional. My Mom enjoyed the many activities + socialising with other residents.
On leaving my Mother stated that her time at Birchmere had prepared her both physically & mentally to return home.

As a family we were very pleased with the home & care she received & would recomend to other potential residents.

My mother has been entirely bedbound for the past six months. She suffers from advanced dementia and pain from a hip fracture operation that was not altogether successful. My mother's condition was an unending worry for me before Birchmere House Care Home accommodated her and I could no longer cope with the work and stress of looking after her, even with the intervention of home carers. Fortunately, Birchmere has taken care of everything and my mother is as settled as she can be having regard for all of her difficulties. The nursing and caring staff know precisely how to deal with this situation and I am safeguarded from receiving regular disturbing telephone calls. The environment generally feels quiet and unpanicked and the staff never complain about being overburdened or rushed. Above all, Birchmere has been flexible in meeting my requirements and is sympathetic to my challenges and my mother's.

My relative was admitted into hospital from Birchmere House early October due to dehydration which led to sepsis; one month later as family we were told that after Birchmere House having been their home for 2.5 years they were no longer welcome back and so were left homeless.
The response to this review from the Home Manager will be that a 'considered and full assessment' was carried out and Birchmere House could not meet the change in needs. It wasn't, my relative was asleep when the assessment took place.

If you value your, or indeed your loved ones, long-term changing care needs please not Birchmere House.

Staff pleasant, always a smile for you. Catering staff really nice, always time for a chat. Great variety of meals and of a high standard, wine and beer available if desired. On the negative side, the time it takes for staff to attend if residents call button has been pressed can take up to 10 minutes or more! Definitely more staff needed on all floors. Also after 5.30 nobody on reception so when visitors leave you can't get out as a code is needed, so then you have to hunt around to find a member of staff.

I always feel that the staff at Birchmere House Care Home care about all. I had a birthday recently and the staff here were wonderful. They came to my room to wish me well, once with birthday cake, with cards and generally, with good wishes. I was made to feel that this was my home and they were my friends.

I recommend anyone to come here and be pleased to talk to anyone about how good it is to live here.

Having spent 6 months in various hospitals I was hoping to find somewhere she could receive the care and attention she required. Initially, it was quite difficult knowing who I should address about different problems but the managers and nursing staff are always polite, friendly, and helpful and will work with you to resolve any difficulties you may have. As with all new experiences, there is a settling-in period which I was aware of and now both Mum and the family are getting to find our way and she has settled well.
