My mum's care for the last six months of her life was excellent. The staff are wonderful, caring people. Helpful, compassionate and professional. They are angels and I cannot thank them enough for looking after my mum until the end of her life.

We were very happy with the care provided for our son, we knew he was well looked after, supported and we knew he was safe, secure and supported through his behaviours. We also found the home extremely well run and we could go and chat for support when needed as the door was always open. We knew our
son was safe in your hands so we thank you all for this.

Our mam, who had a massive stroke, resided in Woodside Grange for over five years experiencing care on residential, then dementia and eventually nursing. In all these areas I can honestly say she was treated with kindness and compassion, being offered not only care but friendship and love (even when
she could be quite difficult and demanding). I know our mam could not have been cared for any better and it brought me great comfort to know she died amongst people who knew her well and treat her with the dignity she deserved.
Thank you all for what you did for our mam and for the support offered to family members through some very difficult and heartbreaking times.

My mum recently resided in Woodside Grange and had been there for the last five years. She recently passed away and spent her last two weeks in nursing care. The care and compassion/love my mum received during her last few weeks were faultless and the support the family received during this very difficult
time was very much appreciated and helped us deal with the imminent outcome. During her years at Woodside, she was cared for with love and consideration and during the last few months, we felt like we had an extended family. I know my mum will be missed not only by her immediate family but also by the carers who spent so much time looking after her and treating her with dignity towards the end. We would like to thank all those involved with Mum from the carers to the management for your kindness and support during this difficult time.

I had concerns about my sister having to be admitted into a care facility. However, my fears were soon put at ease, my sister has been very happy here. Staff have made her very welcome and, as a family, we are reassured she is receiving excellent support which is person-centred to all her needs.

My dad moved into Woodside in February and has settled so well with the support of the wonderful staff here. We have found compassion and empathy in abundance here and feel secure in the knowledge that Dad is well cared for and his undiagnosed needs are at last being looked into by nurses who listen
to our concerns. You have adapted safe visiting and use common sense - which is very refreshing. Thank you.

My brother became a resident at Woodside in December, they took him in as an emergency case and have shown nothing but care and compassion. All the staff have supported my brother and made his stay a positive experience. The care home has gone above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of
my brother are paramount. The personal interaction and kindness from all at Woodside are outstanding. A huge thank you from all the family and sincere gratitude is sent.

My mother stayed here for 11 days following discharge from hospital. Every member of staff was kind and helpful which ensured my mum had the best possible stay. Staff were also flexible with visits which helped greatly with the mental health of my mother. Both kindness and visits from family are key.

During this very trying time, residents and families are finding it very hard not seeing loved ones. Although my family and I have always been pleased with this home and its facilities, during the lockdown, everybody has been 100% caring. Emails, phone calls and Facetime have kept us informed. So a
big shout out to every employee in Woodside Grange for keeping themselves and our loved ones safe.

Special thanks to H and C on Primrose floor who were there to answer questions, reassure and give excellent care to my Nana. As a family,

Current Review Score: 9.0 (8.981)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (8.981) out of 10 for Woodside Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.486 for Woodside Grange is calculated as follows: ( (113 Excellents x 5) + (37 Goods x 4) + (18 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 173 Ratings = 4.486
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.495 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Woodside Grange is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 121 registered maximum number of service users is 24.2. 15 Positive Reviews ÷ 24.2 = 0.62
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Barbara

Barbara Parker

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2022

Barbara joined St Martins Care in June 2022 as The Deputy Manager but has progressed and taken over the role of the Registered Manager at the beginning of 2023. Barbara says that she sort of fell into care after returning from overseas when her husband was in the armed forces. She started as a domiciliary carer with a small domiciliary company and progressed to a supervisor not knowing if she would like care. However, she stayed with the company for 7 years and fell in love with caring for the elderly. Barbara decided that she wanted to progress into the management side of social care so she went to work for another domiciliary company as a case manager. This entailed doing pre assessments with the service user before the care package started whilst retaining some contact with the services user. Barbara stayed with the company and progressed her career as a deputy manager and then a registered manager. However, she missed day-to-day contact with service users so applied for a role in a residential care home so she could continue within a management role but also have more contact with the residents. Although Woodside Grange is the biggest of St Martins Care’s homes, Barbara says, “it still has that homely feel which comes from the great team of staff and the care they deliver is second to none. We have a new management team in place, who are very passionate, caring and dedicated and I look forward to working with them ensuring Woodside Grange continues to deliver the best care we possibly can.”

Lisa

Lisa Burkin

Job Title: LD Manager Joined: 2012

Lisa joined St Martins Care in August 2012 as an Activities Co-Ordinator at the Windermere Grange home. She soon realised that care was in her blood and completed her NVQ level 2 in Health & Social Care. She transferred to Woodside Grange in June 2015 and worked across all units before becoming the first staff member of the Chestnut Suite Learning Disabilities Unit which opened in January 2016. Lisa's son has autism and learning disabilities and she cared for him for 18 years before he moved into residential care. Reflecting on this experience, Lisa says "at first I found life very difficult to deal with. I felt that I had failed him. I soon realised that my knowledge and patience around dealing with all the ups and downs bringing my son up could be put to good use. Working in the care sector made me feel worthwhile again." When asked about her vision for the future, Lisa says "Chestnut Suite is a lively and friendly place to live. I aim to ensure everyone feels safe and secure here and feel that this is their home. I am hoping that in the future Chestnut Suite becomes a stand alone unit and although I enjoy being part of Woodside Grange, I feel for myself and my staff, that this is the next step to developing and improving our support for adults with learning disabilities in our area."

Clare

Clare Whould

Job Title: Quality Lead Joined: 2016

Clare began working in care within the community around 15 years ago and realised quite quickly that she had a passion for providing care for those who were in need. She worked within the community for around 2 years before taking a leap to work within a residential setting. Clare began working in a care home which had some sentimental meaning for her as her mother had previously been a deputy manager there and she wanted to make her proud. Clare knew she did not want to progress her career in a clinical role so decided, when offered, to accept a promotion to a senior care assistant. Clare joined St Martins Care at Woodside Grange in 2016 as a senior care assistant and she cannot see herself working anywhere else. Clare says, “my heart and soul is with Woodside Grange. I believe we offer the best care and always strive to ensure all residents are treated with the utmost respect, dignity and empathy”. In October, Clare was offered a role as the quality lead within Woodside Grange. Clare says, “I was so proud of myself and overwhelmed that I had been offered this opportunity and want to work to achieve outstanding on our CQC report. I enjoy being hands-on with care and I am not too proud to get stuck in where needed.”
