Nestled in the countryside overlooking fields and woodland, Yarnton is a beautiful care home with stunning gardens.

But it’s the team, who provide residential, dementia, nursing, palliative and respite care, that make it special.

The staff spend so much time getting to know who their residents are, their life histories and what they love to do, so they can enrich their lives.

There is so much to do each and every day. From baking and movement to music sessions, trips out and about in the home’s minibus, to cheese and wine tasting, animal visits and movie nights. There is also a hair salon, with a mobile hairdresser visiting weekly for appointments with the residents.

Yarnton has a ‘Grow Your Own Way’ project, where the residents choose what to plant in the gardens and greenhouse, nurturing their produce, which is then used by the chef in the kitchen. There are also raised beds and wheelchair friendly pathways, so residents in wheelchairs can enjoy gardening too.

The team champion the residents to have a very active role to play in how the home is run, with resident ambassadors who provide feedback on everything from activities to the menu, as well as running residents’ meetings.

The home-cooked food is delicious, from roast dinners with all the trimmings, to fish and chip Friday and home-baking with afternoon tea.

The home is beautiful, with spacious, en-suite bedrooms, lounges where residents can enjoy socialising, as well as smaller cosy lounges to relax in with loved ones, who are welcome to visit at any time.

The home has a private Facebook page, so families and friends can see what the residents are enjoying doing, even when they can’t be there in person.

The community are embraced into life in the home, with regular entertainers, children from the local schools and community volunteers popping in to spend time with the residents, which they love.

Mum came to the home three months ago.

From the start she felt it was her new home, the staff were caring and compassionate and the rooms were clean and of a high standard.

The manager and two certain carers deserve high praise for their dedication not forgetting the other carers that form the

regular care work along with some agency staff who fill in.

I was very impressed when they immediately spotted mums downturn in health and thanks to the prompt actions of the carers she went to hospital, after they had called the paramedics.

She is now back home at Yarnton Residential and Nursing Home, laughing and joking with the staff and other residents thanks to their prompt actions.

The bottom line is mums happy, the staff are well trained, the food I have seen looks delicious, and visitors are made most welcome at this, home from home.

Our Dad was diagnosed with a terminal illness late last year whilst living over 200 miles away from the rest of the family in Oxford. We and Dad considered ourselves very lucky indeed to have been able to move him into Yarnton.

Dad settled into Yarnton immediately and chose to remain and be looked

after there in his final days rather than move to Hospital or into a Hospice. We are so grateful, that with the support of the Nurses, Carers and Management at Yarnton, along with the outside support from the local GP and a specialist Nurse from a local Hospice, we were able to honour his wish. Nothing was too much trouble, I really cannot praise the staff at Yarnton highly enough.

Dad was too poorly to take part in any organised activities and preferred to remain in his room. Thankfully, his room was lovely, could be arranged to suit his preference and had a lovely view of the grounds. He was very comfortable there.

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of your father, but am glad that you felt he received the very best care during his time with us. Your kind words really are invaluable to our team, and to the loved ones of our potential residents. Best wishes.

My dad has been at Yarnton since Nov 18, for end of life care. He receives excellent professional care, nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff The care workers are kind, caring and responsive, the catering staff are talented and accommodating and from a medical/nursing point of view, he
is in excellent hands from the nurses and weekly GP visits, attending to his changing needs. It's the small things that are important to my dad such as a comfortable armchair, a daily newspaper and ice lollies, all of which the home provides. His lovely room overlooks the garden, bird feeder and rabbits. Dad doesn't have much of an appetite but when he has felt like eating, he enjoys the food, especially the desserts. End of life is extremely challenging, physically and emotionally, and all I hope for is that Dad is cared for in the best and most comfortable way, and this is certainly our experience here. I can't recommend Yarnton Care Home highly enough.

Now that the management issues have been solved, I feel more confident that consistent 24-hour care will be achieved. Day time care has always been good, I fear that previously some night shifts were not up to standard.

Mum moved into the care home from hospital. She was underweight and unable to walk without extreme support.
We chose the Sanctuary because it seemed lovely and Mum is very sociable. The food at the Sanctuary has helped her enormously. She can now walk with a frame easily and has the confidence to
walk unaided. The gardens are superb and she has made friends. She is not demented and yet has been able to mix with the many relatives who visit. It is a happy place. The care is excellent.
Turnover of staff is high though.

A safe environment with a majority of caring and kindly staff. However, staff do not always respect residents privacy. Staff have also rummaged through my own property without permission. I do not believe end of life care is sufficiently well met and understand that residents near death are left alone.
This is not due to staff but to a lack of management guidance. I suspect some staff would benefit from additional training in how to treat those who are nearing end of life. I note that if residents express fear and saying "I am afraid" the response is not "why" or "tell me more" rather the matter is brushed aside. Neither the residents or myself are reassured by this.
Reply from Michelle Murchan, Regional Manager at Yarnton Residential and Nursing Home

Thank you for your recommendation and for meeting with me to discuss some of the things you have outlined in your review - I hope I was able to reassure you. Our team receives regular on-going training, in particular in end of life care and we are frequently complimented on how we care for our residents and their loved ones. As always if you have got any concerns please don’t hesitate to come and see me.

My stepmother has been a resident from Feb 2017 to date.
In general, I have found the staff very helpful and caring well for my mother - though, particularly at weekends, staff can seem in limited supply.
I have particularly found the health care staff both efficient and helpful.
There appear to
be staff retention problems ie a lot of new faces - and little cover when staff are on leave or sick.
This has led to a few clear lapses of service (cleaning/activities).
Reply from Michelle Murchan, Regional Manager at Yarnton Residential and Nursing Home

Thank you for your review and positive recommendation. Recently we have successfully recruited some additional members to our team which is why there are a few new faces – I am pleased to say we have had some really positive feedback about how well they have settled in. We did have a short spell recently when we were recruiting extra permanent domestic staff but these too have now started. If you would like to discuss anything further I would be really happy to speak to you.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.246)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.246) out of 10 for Yarnton Residential and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.779 for Yarnton Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (74 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.779
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.467 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Yarnton Residential and Nursing Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0.667
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
