Overall Experience
My mother has been a resident at the Star and Garter care home for more than two years. During this whole period, the care has been exemplary with committed staff who really care about the residents. It has been difficult the last year with Covid but they have continued to deliver the highest quality care and attention to my mother who has advanced dementia. They show empathy and a good level of knowledge when medical care is required. Communication is good and the residents have both a trained nurse and a healthcare assistant as a named key worker. We can contact them at any time to discuss my mothers care.
Staffing levels are good and in normal times there is a myriad of volunteers and activities going on. During Covid, the staff have gone above and beyond to gainfully occupy residents and ensure that receive optimum care.

Thank you everyone at the Star and Garter for the incredible level of care you have delivered and continue to deliver even when times have been difficult.

I can’t praise the Star and Garter highly enough. They’ve looked after both my parents, first my father and now my mother, and they could not have done more to help them feel valued and to make their lives interesting and enjoyable. They encouraged my father (who had Parkinson’s) to join in skittles games, realised the answers he was trying to give in the quizzes and handled his death with great sensitivity. Latterly in the lockdown one of the staff has given her own time to help my mother have Zoom contact with us, her children. She keeps telling us how kind the staff are to her and how lucky she feels to be where she is, and we see evidence of the good relationships between staff and residents every time we visit. The atmosphere is unfailingly professional, warm, relaxed and reassuring - the staff are easy to speak to and they respond immediately to any concern or worry raised. We the children are unanimous in feeling deeply grateful she is somewhere so well and caringly run.

My mother has been a resident at the Royal Star & Garter for several years. The home is marvellous. While I greatly appreciate every aspect of the services the Star & Garter provide, I would particularly comment on the outstanding quality of the staff, who have consistently provided superb care and consideration to my mother and done everything possible to ensure that she is able to live in comfort and dignity. I have also found management to be excellent and extremely responsive on those occasions when I have had reason to communicate with them.
The last year has obviously been very difficult because of the Covid pandemic. I have been consistently impressed with all the steps taken by the staff to keep the residents safe and secure while making every effort to facilitate communications between residents and their family members during the lockdown restrictions.

I can't imagine a better facility than the Royal Star and Garter.

My father is a resident at Surbiton and has been for a while now. I find their care of him to be excellent. He has many needs and is very reliant on the staff for most everyday things. He always looks happy and as healthy as can be expected. They run many social programmes during the day (Covid has obviously made this difficult). But he gets involved with singing, crosswords, tai chi, they play balls games, have poetry readings, singalongs. The list is endless. Visitors from local farms and schools. Regular tea/birthday parties they have a gym he attends most mornings for chair cycling always egged on by the lovely staff. They watch afternoon movies on a huge screen. They have lovely gardens. Regular outings. Staff are always very welcoming of visitors whenever. I could not wish for him to be in a better place. Thank you.

The manager and team really do keep you informed and up to date with everything.
Activities are so good something to include all.

My father-in-law, in his very late 90’s, has been a resident of the Surbiton Royal Star and Garter home for over 18 months. He is extremely content, feels well cared for, comfortable and safe.
The care team cater for his needs and yet give him space for his privacy enabling him to read as much as he likes. The physio team provide him with daily exercise with fun included.
The nursing team ensure that his medical needs are handled efficiently, sensitively and with care.
The meals and wine satisfy his appetite and provide him with variety.

Basically, his happiness and comfort with a high-quality care team provide his family with a great deal of comfort knowing he is safe, clean, well looked after and in good hands.

This is a care home like no other - outstanding in its provision and care, a truly vibrant and exciting place to be. My mother, whose dementia impacts greatly on all aspects of her life, has benefited enormously from the high level of personal attention afforded by gentle, kindly and devoted staff, who are focused on the promotion of a happy and dignified environment for all. They have managed to create a true home, where everyone, residents and relatives alike, feels a part of a large and caring family. This is due in no small part to the inspired leadership of a brilliant management team, for whom nothing is ever too much trouble, and who are a constant source of reassurance and assistance. The weekly and monthly activities programmes are impressive, the food excellent and in plentiful supply, and everyone exudes happiness and good cheer. Overall my mother enjoys impeccable care and very contented life, for which we, her family, are immensely grateful.

My father has been a resident at the Surbiton Royal Star & Garter for two years. Perhaps the best testament to the exceptional level of care that he has received is that he is extremely happy and regards the Royal Star & Garter as his home. At his age (98 on arrival) he has, amazingly, had a new lease of life. This is a huge tribute to the whole team at Royal Star and Garter. I cannot recommend them highly enough. His family are all hugely grateful.

Royal Star & Garter - Surbiton is extremely well run. Very proactive with excellent care. The majority of the time the staff always give time to address any issue and follow up to ensure that it has been resolved. The staff has worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic and have put on events when possible to entertain the residents including external trips.

I shall always be grateful that the Royal Star & Garter, Surbiton was there when it became clear that my mother required residential care three and a half years ago. It has provided excellent care throughout, and led by a strong management team, has risen to the huge challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic. The staff are caring, and we feel we have come to know many of them. The energetic activities and volunteers manager, together with her team, produces a full and varied programme, and efforts were made to continue this as much as possible during the pandemic. Residents are able to air their views at regular meetings with the manager. The fabric of the building, and the gardens are of a high standard and well-maintained. Services such as hairdressing, audiology and podiatry are made available and have been reinstated as Covid restrictions have allowed. My mother has particularly valued the Armed Forces links which the Royal Star & Garter enables.

Our father had a serious fall and he went from being completely independent to needing serious care after a 10-week stint in Hospital. All his family are either overseas or in London so we moved him from Wales to the Royal Star and Garter in Surbiton in August 2020 so his family could see him regularly. The staff at the Royal Star and Garter have been simply amazing they have not only been fabulous carers, but they have also been family to their residents as well, during all the lockdowns. They have cared and understood the trauma of our fathers' major life-changing fall from day 1, they have kept us constantly informed, they have allowed access when Daddy has been unwell, I simply cannot fault the care, devotion and understanding not only for our father but his family as well. They are so dedicated. When you enter the home it is warm and friendly, nothing is too much for them, the care they give goes above the call of duty and I would highly recommend the Royal Star Garter to anybody.

My mother has been a resident at the Royal Star and Garter home, Surbiton for almost 6 years now and I can truly say that she has been the happiest we’ve seen her in many years. The carers and nursing staff have become like family to her, especially during Covid-19 lockdown.
The nursing care is second to none!
During ‘normal’ times there are outings, concerts and other activities on a weekly basis, shopping trips, drives to the local park.
During the summer there are boat trip along the Thames, quizzes and singing with a pianist in the large entrance hall. Christmas is a delightful time at the home - Christmas trees, decorations, children from local schools singing carols. Family members (2x) invited to Christmas dinner. Each resident is given a Christmas present.

My mother has some of her own furniture in her en-suite room and can have her meals either in the main dinning room or in her own room. It is a pleasure to visit and know my mother is happy and safe there.

The Royal Star & Garter Care Home has provided exceptional care for my parents. My father who suffered from Parkinson's spent the last 9 months of his life being looked after most beautifully. His carers gave him back his personal dignity and brought joy back into his life. My mother suffers from dementia; the care she has met with has also been extraordinarily professional, imaginative and empathetic. She has trouble with her memory but she often comments how safe she feels and that she knows is surrounded by kindness. During the lockdown, the staff were all superheroes, finding many ways to keep the residents' spirits up while looking after them in the most difficult of circumstances. They introduced Zoom sessions, built covid-secure visiting rooms and did all sorts of activities to help the residents cope. It's a wonderful place, staffed by simply amazing people. I owe them all a big debt of gratitude.

My father has made his home at The Star and Garter for just over a month and in such a short time the Star and Garter really has become his home. Such care has been taken of him by the very professional and caring staff that he is much more mobile, taking part in all on offer and says he feels very lucky to make his home at The Star and Garter.

My father moved into The Royal Star & Garter Home in Surbiton six weeks ago and from day one, he has been treated with the utmost respect and care. All of the staff are friendly, polite and give off their best.

The home itself is bright, spacious and welcoming and the facilities are modern and "state of the art". There are always activities on offer and fantastic outings, concerts and entertainment for the residents to enjoy. I know that my father is very well cared for there.

We have both experienced great kindness and understanding nothing appears to be too much trouble. My husband's dementia has not been easy to manage for anyone but the staff from manager to cleaners have striven to do their best for him.

The home is homely and welcoming. The staff are warm and friendly, the care is professional and kind, the food is excellent. It truly is home in all senses of the word a place to feel loved and secure.

I started nursing in 1988. My first role after qualifying was working at Royal Star & Garter which I absolutely loved. Since then, I have worked in several acute hospitals across London and then became Head of Nursing and Registered Manager at The Children’s Trust.

The best thing about my job is the residents!

I keep the balance between running a home, and working with such dedicated staff but also being able to manage my workload so I can spend quality time with the residents.
