From the very first interaction with Darcy House we knew we were dealing with people who really cared not only for their residents but also the family members coping with the momentous changes that moving into a care home brings. The positive attitude and willingness to listen to every single concern, worry and question is never met with a "we've spoken about this", it is always met with "we will help in any way we can". Exemplary is the word for Darcy House.

We used Darcy House as a 2-month respite stepping-stone for my 99-year-old mother, between hospital and getting her back into her own home. The care and attention she received in Darcy House was second to none. The facilities are excellent, the staff are brilliant, nothing was too much trouble, and the outcome could not have been better. Well done Darcy House.

I have been impressed with how hard the staff have worked to help mum and dad settle in. The senior staff and the reception staff in particular have been extremely supportive and made me feel that no query is too small or insignificant. There is always somebody to turn to for advice and support which means such a lot. My only concerns are around communication down through all the staff teams - sometimes requests take a while to implement before they become routine. We have also been trying hard to include bespoke activities for my dad (with only some success.

Reply from Carinna Mycock, Manager at Darcy House Care Home

Thank you for this positive feedback. The activities team are working hard to plan bespoke activity groups which we know your Dad will enjoy, We feel very fortunate to be able to care for both your Mum and Dad within the home, it is a real privilege to support a lovely married couple.

I am 95 years of age still able to walk independently. My hearing is poor; therefore, I don't attend meetings, cinema, TV etc & hardly use the 'activities', hence not rated. I came to Darcy House on 1st July 2024 when they opened and am therefore the senior resident. I have no complaints in any of the facilities. The main problem at Darcy is in the level of staffing. Therefore carers cannot meet the needs and wishes to help required by some residents who are ill, confined to wheelchairs or other mobility aids, requesting constant medical attention or feeding at mealtimes. Overall we have nice and friendly staff & management and I am personally extremely happy here and have been since I came.

Reply from Carinna Mycock, Manager at Darcy House Care Home

Thank you for your feedback, staffing levels are regularly reviewed and maintained in line with safe staffing guidance, and as a home that is still growing our communities we are constantly recruiting more staff to support our residents. I am so pleased that your overall experience is a positive one and I thank you for taking the time to review our service.

Mum was very well cared for, staff were kind and caring. She benefited from all the help she received and the encouragement she got to recover from her operation. We really appreciated the care for mum. The setting is lovely and the staff are very welcoming. She also liked the easy access to various services such as hairdressers and the relaxed way friends could visit.

Excellent standards of care all round. Personalised in every way.

Carers work hard to meet mum's emotional and physical needs. They are alert to all medical issues. I feel certain I am being given the full picture in communications. Mum has formed a warm, trusting relationship with particular members of the team which is a huge reassurance to me. Thanks to all of the team for their hard work.

My month here has been like a holiday. The surroundings are delightful - it was a joy to admire the beautiful views and to watch the sheep and cattle grazing. The staff were friendly and most caring. My every need was seen to. I prefer to read alone rather than join in activities but a variety was available. The outing to Chatsworth was splendid. A warm thank you to all concerned.

Please, can I comment on the nursing staff dealing with my mother's WTT symptoms last week? Efficient and caring for my mother's medical needs and concerns. Because of this, my mum received antibiotics in good time to treat her over a bank holiday weekend. When I know, as my mum's carer, this is not always easy. If left any later, this probably would have led to more serious medical issues. Thank you to the nurse who dealt with this.

I arrived by ambulance, and room looked good, however the food on the hand was very poor, for example I requested soup, it was home made with the start being reasonable the remainder was just pieces of whatever it was made from. Had porridge first morning, which I had every morning at home, to me it wasn't cooked enough, having the end of the oat as little hard bits. I could go on, 5 days in, not had a good meal. The people here obviously not of the working class, as I am seemed to accept this poor stuff. I have come here from hospital, and need help getting in and out of bed. I had a fixture at home attached to the bed enabling me to get in and out. This was brought here and fitted, it was not perfect and did move a little but it did the job. I happened to come here during the Easter break so obviously all the regular staff were off. Today the first day back for them. I went for lunch, could only consider a jacket potato.

Since my mother moved into Darcy House in the autumn of 2024, she has received excellent care and attention from everyone involved at the home. Everybody is extremely attentive to my mother's needs, both medical and social, and it has been a great reassurance and relief to my brothers, myself and our wider family, that she is in a place where there is always someone keeping an eye out for her to ensure that she can move around freely but safely. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff, no matter how busy they already are.

Being a new building, Darcy House is a bright, spacious and thoroughly wonderful home for my mother and, in my opinion, all of the other residents too. I would recommend it to anyone who is concerned that a relative or friend needs to move somewhere in order to live safely and with dignity.

Darcy house is a lovely warm caring place for residents and a very welcoming place for relatives and visitors. The staff are professional and knowledgeable about each individual resident's needs and take time to get to know and spend quality time with them. They are always respectful when talking to relatives about issues or just simply relaying what activities the resident has been taking part in and how they engaged and enjoyed it. Nothing is too much trouble for them. If we mention a requirement, we find it has been acted upon promptly. Staff are all friendly, and with a good amount of humour, keep the place a positive one to visit and live in. They all seem very happy in their work. We enjoy visiting, always a pleasant positive experience. Thank you all at Darcy!

I am very happy here considering I was sad to leave my own home and I have only stayed here for two weeks today. It's very early to say much as it is early days. Everyone is very kind and helpful - all the staff during day and night. It is difficult sometimes to get a shower when I want one. The food is excellent, love having my hair done. Room and leisure rooms beautiful and clean. The facilities are very good especially for family and friends visiting. Have already enjoyed listening to singers, a man playing his guitar. When I arrived I had so much help to please me. The laundry is excellent.

Fantastic purpose-built modern building in beautiful surroundings. Light and spacious throughout with the resident's own room, big enough to create a lovely home. The decor and furnishings are of a quality second to none. On the visits I've made there's always been a warm friendly greeting. So much care is given to treating each resident as an individual catering for all different needs in a respectful manner without being patronising. The meals are amazing and presented in a way that shows the importance of mealtimes being such a social occasion between the residents and staff. When you see everyone with smiles on their faces, it's a pleasure to visit.

The care at Darcy House is outstanding. Since my dad moved here from another home he is a completely different man so much happier. Every member of staff has welcomed him, taken the time to get to know him, and keep him stimulated with relevant interests. The home is in a beautiful setting and feels like a 5* hotel and the level of care is also 5*! They are very experienced in dementia care. It is so comforting to know he is experiencing the very best care. If you are looked for somewhere for a relative - don't look any where else, Darcy truly is the best in its field. They couldn't have done any more for my dad but also for me.

Lovely modern home, my mother has views over the Derwent valley from her room. All the staff (including Managers, Carers, Cleaners, Chefs) appear to be well versed in their roles and very friendly. The activities have been mainly indoors since my mother started in the home although the staff will take the residents out to the gardens when the weather is appropriate and organise trips to local towns/attractions as well. All in all we have been very impressed with the home and staff and my mother has settled in well. We particularly like to go and have a coffee in the café when visiting Mum

Thank you for this lovely review, as one of the first people we welcomed, your mum has become a true patron for Darcy House, often advising newer residents on events and the routines of the home. A friendly, polite team of carers and other staff. My partner needs a lot of care more than perhaps other residents. He has a lovely room and bathroom and he really enjoys his shower. Because of his disabilities, there are no activities at the moment that he can participate in, so he is left on his own quite a lot. Meal times he seems to be on his own. Although the food is beautifully prepared and served, it is not always the sort of food older people enjoy like mashed potatoes etc (cottage pie for example)

My husband's respite care in July in Darcy House in Matlock was marvellous. He was one of the 1st residents and the welcome was out of this world with balloons and a tape to cut to open the building. The surroundings, views and gardens are beautiful and the facilities are fantastic in an amazing building. But the home's most important quality was the excellent care and attention to detail in a calm, friendly and reassuring atmosphere. My husband loved the food and praised the chef. For me as his wife, it was important to know he was safe and being looked after 24/7. The respite gave me a chance to recharge my batteries and I noticed straight away an improvement in my husband's mobility and general well-being. Thanks to the amazing caring staff. I have already booked again.

We found Darcy House extremely welcoming and caring. The surroundings are really spectacularly good. The views and outside spaces are lovely. As a nurse, the most important aspect of the role for me is to ensure our residents at Darcy House receive safe, person-centred care. It is a privilege to be part of the team and to lead our experienced nursing staff at this beautiful home. I have 32 years of experience in healthcare in various roles within the NHS sector. Throughout the years of my nursing career, I have delivered care to people with long-term health conditions, such as people who have had a stroke, Parkinson’s care delivery, people who have new-onset dementia and those who have more advanced complex dementia needs.

I have also worked closely with community palliative care teams and have the fundamental knowledge needed to ensure families and carers are involved fully throughout the care journey with their loved ones. I have 10 years of experience, more recently as a Matron for older adults, and I take pride in paying attention to the details in the care we deliver to our older adult residents. Being open, honest, kind and showing compassion for the well-being of others are all really the core of being a nurse.
