Staff are amazing at managing my father. He has been a resident here for 3 months now. They now know dad very well, and superb at using distraction techniques to occupy dad when he is stressed or looking for my mum. I cannot praise the nursing staff and the care staff enough. They do really care about
dad and always have his best interests at heart. The family are all delighted about the care dad is receiving.
Reply from Cameron, Team Member at Mearns HouseThank you so much for your thoughtful review. We're truly pleased to hear that your father has settled in well over the past three months, and that the team's support and understanding have brought reassurance to you and your family. Our colleagues work hard to get to know each resident as an individual, so your comments about the care team recognising your dad's needs and using gentle distraction techniques when he feels stressed mean a great deal to us. It's wonderful to know that you feel confident in the nursing and care staff and that you can see how much they care for him. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. We're honoured to support your father and are always here for you and your family.

We felt my mum was very well looked after during her recent respite stay. Right from arrival through to the goodbyes staff were attentive, kind and patient. We were reassured she was safe, had the opportunity to join in activities and had company all in beautiful surroundings.
Mearns House is beautifully
decorated with lots of lovely homely touches. My mum thought the food excellent and room very comfortable.
We'd definitely recommend Mearns House to others.

My Dad went for a couple of weeks respite care and when I collected him had very much enjoyed his time at Mearns House. The staff were friendly and interacted well with the residents and accommodated my Dad's interests and hobbies. The only downside was construction work that I presume is finished now
that stopped full access to the garden He is now looking forward to his next visit which is very comforting to me.
Reply from Kirsty Craig, Home Manager at Mearns HouseWe are so pleased to hear that dad enjoyed his time with ourselves and look forward to welcoming him back to Mearns House. We are happy to report that the balcony works have now been completed and we have full access to our beautiful garden grounds which we fully intend to take full advantage of given the recent sunny weather!

My Mum needed a short respite stay and we were delighted with the care provided. Staff were compassionate, caring and friendly. The establishment seems to be very well resourced in terms of having plenty of staff to provide safe levels of care. Pleasant atmosphere. Clean and well decorated/furnished.
Food offered seems to be excellent with a good choice. There is a coffee bar with coffee for the residents and their visitors. Good communication from staff.

My dad entered respite care after deteriorating quickly with cancer. From the minute I met the team at the home, the level of care they provided was exemplary. nothing was too much for them and they loved and cared for my dad in the last few weeks of his life. the support I received helped through a
very difficult time too and I have had regular contact weeks after my dad has passed to make sure I am ok. The manager runs a very good home and I have nothing but praise for her and her team. Would highly recommend.
Reply from Kirsty Craig, Home Manager at Mearns HouseI absolutely speak on behalf of the entire team when I say, it was a true honour to care and support your dad on his final journey of life. My husband was in for nine days respite. After researching various care homes, my husband picked Mearns House.
The home was immaculate and very fresh.
The staff went above and beyond to ensure my husband had an enjoyable and relaxing stay.
His words at the end if his stay was it was more like
a hotel than a care home. We would most definitely use Mearns House again.

My mother took up residency at Mearns Court in October 2023 having been widowed in 2020 and becoming less self-sufficient. She sadly passed away in March 2024; however, my brother and I will be eternally grateful to all the staff at Mearns House for the care and genuine love they provided during our
mum's stay. They gave her a new lease of life, providing amazing entertainment and activities. They would constantly go 'above and beyond' to optimise the experience of the residents and create a joyful, safe and loving 'home.'

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.815)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.815) out of 10 for Mearns House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.890 for Mearns House is calculated as follows: ( (181 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 200 Ratings = 4.89
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mearns House is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 68 registered maximum number of service users is 13.6, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Manager

I have worked in the care sector for 20 years and have a genuine passion for caring for and supporting older people. My dedication to developing my knowledge and skills has always been driven by the goal of making a real difference in the lives of those I care for.

At Mearns House, our team of highly trained and compassionate staff go above and beyond to ensure residents feel truly at home. We take a friendly, person-centred approach, ensuring that every decision about a resident’s care is made with their voice at the heart of it.

We offer a rich and varied programme of activities, both within the home and beyond, encouraging residents to continue with the hobbies they love. Whether it’s baking, bingo, crafts, gardening, or enjoying visits from local entertainers, we believe in creating opportunities that bring fulfilment and joy.

It’s not just about providing excellent care—it’s about ensuring that residents, families, and staff alike feel supported and valued. I am committed to making Mearns House a truly great place to live and work, where everyone can feel at home.
