My mum has been in the care of Primrose House for just under 3 years. She has been treated with dignity and care. The bedroom is a home from home. The care team are kind, the food is amazing, and they really understand my mum's needs. I would highly recommend this home for anyone looking for a new home,
where you can trust in the care of your loved one.

Our dad has been in Primrose House for a few years now. There were some problems with different managers and staff to begin with but the way it is run now is pretty darn good. Management always listen if we have a problem and the regular staff that know our dad well are patient with him and will have
a chat and a laugh with him.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Primrose HouseGood afternoon Teresa P. Thank you for this very kind 5 / 5 star review of your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at Primrose House in Westward Ho! North Devon. It's lovely to read that you feel the home is now 'pretty darn good' and, importantly, that your Dad has a laugh and chat with the care team. Kathy has been Registered Manager for a few years now - working her way up from Deputy Manager - but you're right - we did go through a period where we saw a quick turnover of managers. Whilst it's always frustrating to go through such periods we are always determined that we provide the necessary support to the home at the time to ensure standards are maintained and we keep on searching until we get the right managers (and care teams) in place. Thank you again for your kind words - they will mean a lot to the team at Primrose House (as they do me) Kindest regards, Nathan.

My mother has been with Primrose house since January and it has given her and the family more confidence knowing that she is being kept safe 24 hours a day. Kathy the manager is always approachable for any support and guidance along with her wonderful team of care workers. My mother feels blessed that
she is in a 'safe place'. We can't thank this Care home enough we are all so grateful.

My wife is not the person I married over 60 years ago, prior to the last 2 and a half years she was the most caring and nice individual. I am right in saying that her manner has not been the same since from almost day one when she was upset because of the loss of dignity through being washed, etc.,
and the hoist was never to her liking, and because of this she has been bedbound for most of her time at the home. The staff are an excellent bunch, and they have done their utmost to make her stay ok. All I can say is that dementia is a horrible mind-changing illness.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Primrose HouseGood afternoon Dudley B. Thank you for taking the time to leave this really honest feedback of your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at Primrose House in Westward Ho! North Devon. I am, of course, really sorry to read how dementia has affected your wife and how it has changed her - it is, as you say, a devastating illness. Thank you for highlighting our care team and the excellent work they do - caring and compassion are vital in this industry - and our care team at Primrose House have loads. They are also highly trained and possess lots of vital and expert knowledge which enables them to provide the care that is needed, on both a physical and social level. Thank you again for your kind feedback, I know our care team will really appreciate your appreciation of what they do. Kindest regards, Nathan.

Dad has been at Primrose House over a year now. He receives excellent care, including the additional care needed after a couple of short hospital stays. In addition to this, he is treated like family. The team find time to chat with him, listen to his stories about his life, laugh at his jokes and
go the extra mile by remembering how he likes things done. It is a great comfort knowing he is happy and well cared for

My father in law moved to the care home from Northern Ireland in the autumn. He was eager to return to to the area after being unwell, and wanting to be closer to his family. Everyone has made him very welcome and made the transition into a new environment very easy. All relevant and essential assessments
have been made and his care is timely and appropriate. I can only give praise to all concerned with his care. I have found managers and carers very approachable, caring and professional and couldn't wish for a better place for my father in law to be.

My mother had a serious stroke in may 2024 and was told she wasn't able to return home due to our current property not being suitable so my mother had to go to a care home. I asked to view a couple of care homes and when I asked to view Primrose House I was very optimistic as I've always had a bad experience
with other care homes but primrose have been absolutely brilliant. When I came to view Primrose I was welcomed by the Manager she made me feel very welcome she showed me round the home, she showed me my mum's room she introduced me to all staff on shift I even got to see what sort of foods they serve in the care home and what the atmosphere is like during lunch time and I honestly couldn't be happier. She made me feel at ease with placing mum here and I don't regret my decision, she is amazing she adores all residents and really does have the home at heart. Nothing is never to much trouble the care staff are all amazing. Can't fault anyone. Thank you for everything you have done.

Our father required a care home urgently and was being cared for in N Ireland having had a stroke. Primrose House staff accepted him into the home even though they had a very poor handover and very little knowledge about his needs.
We can not praise the staff enough, they are caring, and professional
and have taken time to learn about our father and his needs. They have kept the family up to date with any areas of concern and have involved other professionals with further assessment of his needs.
Our father is given everything you would hope for in a caring environment, the food is excellent and he thoroughly enjoys his meals, he is living in a bright clean home with a warm friendly atmosphere, and everyone is so welcoming. Placing a loved one in a care home comes with many mixed emotions but having seen how well he has settled and the level of care he is being delivered makes the experience so much easier. We would highly recommend Primrose House.

This year, our father turned 102. Primrose House organised an amazing afternoon birthday celebration for him with a good sing-along to a brass and Ukulele band. There were decorations and cakes galore. They even arranged for a representative from the mayor's office to attend. A special thanks to their
entertainment lady for all her hard work. The fact our father reached 102 is a reflection on the care he receives at the home. The staff are very conscientious and caring and any medical needs are dealt with promptly and efficiently.mWe couldn't have hoped for a better care home for our dad. A big thank you to all the lovely staff at Primrose House.

Since my mum became a resident at Primrose House she has settled in really well. The staff are really friendly, they always have time to talk to her and also to let me know how she’s been. She’s enjoyed joining in with the activities, especially singing and has even felt comfortable enough to go on
an outing.
Mum has a lovely room surrounded with family photos, that they hung for me, to make sure there is always a familiar face around that she recognises. It’s always very clean and Mum always looks well dressed, this is something that she has always prided herself on, so it’s nice to see the staff have thought about this.
The only negative thing I can say is that sometimes they are a little short staffed, usually this is with staff not turning up for work but everyone pulls together to make sure the residents are happy.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director at Primrose HouseGood afternoon. It's really lovely to read how well your mum has settled in, how friendly the care team are, how much your mum enjoys joining in with activities, and how lovely her room is. I note the comment with regards to staffing. We have several contracts in place with care agencies whom we can call to arrange cover, that being said, they can't always cover at short notice. We ask that our care team members call in and give us as much notice as possible before the start of their shift if they are not going to be able to work their shift (and we take action where people do not do this). It's really important to us (and everybody) that all of our shifts are run with the correct amount of carers on duty. Thank you again for this really kind feedback. Nathan.

My dad came to Primrose House from hospital in a very sorry state. The care he received here was excellent and he left a lot fitter than when he arrived. Staffing levels were always good. The home uses agency staff but this was never a problem as they were all experienced and they tended to Dad, never
waited more than 5 minutes when he needed the bathroom. They would walk him wherever possible and he was never left sitting in a wheelchair.
The food looked delicious and Dad was always kept nice and clean, as was his room.
Some of the residents displayed challenging behaviour which the staff handled with understanding and compassion.
Management was approachable and responsive to our family's concerns, It was unfortunate that the activities coordinator was on long-term sick leave and the outdoor space, which eventually be lovely, was a work in progress.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Primrose HouseGood morning Katherine G. It's really lovely to read how well your dad was cared for and how much his condition improved whilst he was living at Primrose House. We hope is continues to do well. We note what you say about agency staff - we have experienced some challenges with recruitment in North Devon but are making really good progress on that front - we do have agency contracts in place as back up and, as you note, we try to always use the same agency team members where possible. We are really fortunate with the team we have at Primrose House, not least in that they all embrace the importance of activities, both bespoke and communal (in fact, it's clear they all really enjoy them themselves). Thank you for noting the outdoor space, a member if staff has been doing an amazing job on this! Thank you again.

I have visited Primrose House a few times to see an elderly distant friend. On the specific occasion, it was a celebration of her 100th birthday and I represented an old long long-standing friend of the residence. They had known each other very well for over 60 years and worked together in education.
The staff and management went to great lengths to make the afternoon celebration pleasurable and memorable. As a visitor, I was made very welcome. I was impressed by the level of care.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.841 for Primrose House is calculated as follows: ( (128 Excellents x 5) + (22 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 151 Ratings = 4.841
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Primrose House is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
