West End shows, karaoke & Frank Sinatra fan has a musical birthday

The residents and care team at Orford House, our Coulsdon-based residential care home, put on a musical inspired 77th birthday celebration for resident, Judy Hyde, complete with Karaoke and a wonderful sing-along.

Judy, who made Orford House her home in June 2023 decided the care home was the perfect place for her as she loved its countryside setting and the beautiful garden views. “As soon as I walked in the door, I knew it was the right place for me,” said Judy. “It’s a lovely home and everyone is so kind and caring.”

Judy was born and raised in Mitcham, in the London Borough of Merton. “Mitcham was a lovely place to grow up in,” continued Judy. “It’s quite a historical place, which is maybe one of the Judy attended school in nearby Tooting, and it’s no surprise that her favourite subjects were History and Music. “I love History and find it fascinating to learn about historical figures and events,” added Judy. “I also adore music – if fact, all things musical – especially West End shows – Oooh, and Frank Sinatra.”

“Judy definitely loves music,” said Michelle Kennett, the Registered Manager at Orford House. “She’ll always be at all of our many live music entertainment performances, singing along with the performers and enjoying herself.”

“Judy is also very artistic,” continued Mary Bradley, the Activities Coordinator at the care home. “In addition to her musical interests, Judy takes part in many – if not all – of our wide and varied activities. She’s especially fond of all our chair-based exercise classes, taking part in quizzes, watching and chatting about history documentaries, getting creative in our Colour Therapy sessions and Judy adores the visits from the Pets as Therapy animals.”

Judy is also quite a ‘Foodie’. “The meals here are really delicious, there’s so many options, you really are spoilt for choice. I am quite partial to the tasty roast dinners and all the Italian dishes as well, especially the Spaghetti Bolognaise,” said Judy.

“We were chatting in one of our recent reminiscing sessions, relaxing having a natter and enjoying a cup of tea, when the topic of conversation moved on to holidays and then swimming,” continued Mary. “Judy told us that she was a late learner, but once she could, she swam as much as possible and really enjoyed it, especially on her holidays to Spain and France.”

“I think it’s always been important to keep myself happy and healthy,” added Judy. “So, I make sure that I participate in all the great activities that take place here, they are all wonderful and keeping fit and active are two things which I believe are the secret to my long and happy life.”

“Judy is such a lovely lady, and we wanted to make her birthday extra special, just like her,” said Michelle. “Knowing how much she loves music and singing, we arranged for a Karaoke Birthday Party, plus a good old-fashioned sing-along, that Judy really enjoyed with all her care home friends.

“She’s such a character, with a great sense of humour. Judy always as a funny story to tell and is really a ‘Game for a Laugh Lady. She’ll always be the first dressed to the nines, or in fancy dress at our internal and community events, there’s no stopping her. We are all so honoured and happy that Judy decided to make Orford House her home,” concluded Mary.
