The kick-off whistle will soon be blown at The Lawn, our Alton-based residential care home as the residents are getting themselves match ready to welcome their relatives, friends, loved ones and members of the local Alton community to join them and enjoy the care home’s free community football focused community event.
“On Friday 19th June, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. everyone at The Lawn we will be remembering and celebrating England’s amazing 1966 World Cup win, marking this year’s World Cup Football Tournament plus championing Care Home Open Week 2026,” said Steve Swift, the Registered Manager at the care home. “To do such an exciting time justice, we will be hosting a free community fun and friendly football event.”
“The ‘Boot-iful Game’ community event will be filled to the ‘Net’, full of fun and interactive games and activities to take part in, which will all be suitable for all ages and all capabilities,” added Adesoji ‘Soji’ Odukomaiya, The Lawn’s Activities Coordinator.
“Alton Football Club’s Youth Under 17 Scorpions Coach, Mark Bentley, will be coming along and running a gentle football inspired workout session, plus taking time to chat to our residents and visitors; and Soji will also be hosting an easy to follow and low impact Fun Football Fitness exercise class,” added Steve.
“We’ll have the inaugural Lawn Foosball Championship Competition taking place where residents and visitors can ‘Footie’ it out to see who can manipulate their Football Team rods to score the most goals and win the Championship. There will be refreshing half-time refreshments available for everyone and, of course, the classic England vs Germany 1966 World Cup Final will be playing for those who’d like to relive – or see for the first time – the unforgettable match,” continued Soji.
“The residents and visitors will also be able to enjoy delicious Hot Dogs and either take part in, or watch, our Seated Penalty Shoot and join in with a great Football Sing-Along too,” said Steve.
“The residents always enjoy our community events, and there are so many advantages of joining in and participating in such activities,” added Soji. “They provide significant physical, mental, and social benefits which include cognitive stimulation through engaging in social conversations and playing games, boost moods and reduce feelings of anxiety.
“Also, the active interactions encourage mobility, increase independence and help to improve sleep and, of course, the intergenerational connections, which bring different generations together, are fantastic as well.”
Running alongside the fantastic Football and social activities, visitors will also be able to take tours of The Lawn. “The care team and I will be on hand to show visitors, prospective residents and respite guests our beautiful home,” continued Steve. “The tours will take in our lovely rooms which are spacious, light and airy, our large and bright dining room and the cosy and comfortable sitting rooms.
“We will also share The Lawn’s fascinating history,” added Steve. “It used to be home to the novelist, Elizabeth Gaskell who wrote a collection novels, short stories, and a biography. Her most famous of her works being Mary Barton, North and South, Cranford, and Wives and Daughters and a biography of her friend, Charlotte Brontë, titled The Life of Charlotte Brontë.”
“The free Community Football Focused Fun Day and the Care Home Open Week celebrations will be the perfect opportunity for us to highlight the outstanding care we provide to each resident and respite client we care for, and allow us to demonstrate what a dedicated, caring and compassionate team we are here at The Lawn.
“Everyone at The Lawn is looking forward to 19th June and welcoming relatives, loved ones, friends and the local community to what is going to be a ‘Pitch Perfect’ day. I know that everyone who comes along and joins us will have a really ‘Feel-Goal’ day,” concluded Steve.
