Hurstwood View is located in the village of Five Ashdown near Uckfield and is on the doorstep of the breath-taking Ashdown Forest. They provide expert and person centred 24-hour nursing, residential and dementia care on their dedicated Memory Lane community, from short stays to long term care.

The home has a team of highly-qualified and attentive staff who are dedicated to focusing on the individual needs of each resident with a tailored care plan for each person. Residents are offered the right level of support for their needs, this is done with respect and always maintaining their dignity.

Their Memory Lane community is designed to support independence and stimulation for those living with dementia whilst receiving the specialist care and support they need. There are two terrace areas one if which is dedicated to gardening, themed corridors and personalised activities.

The life enrichment team has a dedicated programme and is adapted to ensure everyone is able to take part. From small group activities to large events where family can come and join in. The home is very active in the community with trips out in their mini bus to local places and welcoming the community into the home.

The hospitality team cater to all dietary requirements. All meals are nutritious and freshly prepared daily. They strive to offer an excellent dining experience to encourage appetite and the wellbeing of each resident.

My wife entered Hurstwood View on January 17th 2024 and I have been very pleased with the standard of care and attention since that date. Their attention to detail is important in many areas of life but particularly in the Care Sector. Hurstwood View personnel have done very well in this regard.

What can I say this home is just great. All the staff are so friendly & helped my Mum adjust to her restbite for 2 weeks. This was Mum's second restbite here & she has obviously made lots of friends. On her first visit she was a bit anxious but this time she was very happy & relaxed. Which means when
we need restbite care it's exactly that we don't have to worry about Mum at all we know she's getting the best care possible.

No complaints whatsoever. A very friendly reception with the most amazing staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The clinical staff and end-of-life care was excellent. Would recommend this nursing home.

All the staff were kind, attentive and professional, from the manager, nurses and care staff through to the finance/admin team. The home has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and lovely surroundings. Mum's room was spacious, spotless and well equipped. Mum moved to Hurstwood View following a terminal
diagnosis and the nursing staff were incredible in their dedication to making her final weeks comfortable and dignified, and as a family we felt fully supported. I would recommend Hurstwood View Care Home wholeheartedly.

A purpose built, delightful, friendly, caring home with an uplifting atmosphere and a focus on enriching activities alongside the normal daily needs of the residents. The carers are genuinely lovely, very capable & attentive. Mum especially warmed to her carers. Mum's initial 2 week respite turned into
6 weeks. It was unfortunate that she couldn't become a permanent resident, since we could not prove the 2 years funding required. Nevertheless, the lady in the office, did everything possible to advise and support us throughout the process & Mum's respite stay.
Would highly recommend to any family considering a care home for their loved one.

Hurstwood View is described by dad, 'like a 5 star hotel!'. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff, they are all so attentive and genuinely caring, patient and happy at all times. They also give respect to those residents who might just be happy to be in their own company and choose not to
always join in the huge range of daily activities available. Mum was also there last year, if only for a few weeks, but at a time when her health was at it's most challenging. The care she received was outstanding, and the care they gave us as a family equally so. 5 stars from us all and many many thanks to everyone!

Since resident has been living in Barchester Hurstwood View, 2022, I cannot fault the excellent quality of staff on all levels: compassion, care etc. The home is an extension of our family. They helped provide a wonderful birthday party today for my mother-in-law. We all had a wonderful day.

Just everything about Hurstwood worked for my father and family.
He moved into Hurstwood Court, the independent living wing, some years ago. The staff in Hurstwood View were wonderful with him. Checking that he was safe. Providing him with increasing levels of support as, and when, he needed it. The
option to be involved in as much, or as little, of care home life as he wanted provided him with activities, a social network and always ensured a hot meal was available if he didn't feel like shopping and cooking.
After several years in his apartment, he eventually moved into Hurstwood View when it was clear that it was no longer safe for him to live independently.
The wonderful staff there continued to look after him for a number of years until he eventually succumbed to his illness and passed.
The care, compassion and dignity that all the staff show to all their residents, and their families, is truly wonderful. We are all so grateful to the manager and her team.

My husband is being cared for at Barchester Hurstwood View. I am so very pleased and happy that he is there. The staff are truly amazing. Everything is excellent, from the food to the activities to the administration to the maintenance, all of it. Nothing is too much trouble. This is an exceptional
place where you know your loved ones are being taken care of and are safe. Thoroughly recommend it. A happy place.

I can't thank the manager and the team enough for how they are treating my father. Having had him in a previous home which wasn't great and where we felt he was restricted, Barchester Hurstwood View is polar opposite and such a relief for our family.

I find Barchester Hurstwood View excellent for caring for the needs of the residents. All staff are extremely friendly and very helpful in all areas. The activities are very varied and nothing is too much trouble. There is a very friendly atmosphere around the residence with lots of smiley faces. I

The team at Barchester Hurstwood View work together to provide compassionate and supportive care for residents but with dignity for the individual. This is essential when working with dementia. Communication with family is good.
Facilities are maintained to a high standard.
Activities are well-organised
and plentiful and resident-specific needs are accommodated (e.g. family gatherings). This is all so reassuring to family members. Thank you

Hurstwood View has been excellent in every respect. As POA and next of kin for Auntie our location some 300 miles away proved very challenging. We had remotely supported her for many years aided by intense home care support but her increasing confusion and distress demanded she move to receive continuous
support. This she had persistently resisted but Hurstwood's reception and ongoing care proved very special. Her personal bedroom, the quality of food and the opportunity to make new acquaintances was great but above all was the kindness shown by all of the staff in making her at ease in this new environment.
Of equal value was the staff's engagement with us. Being unable to visit we were rigorously kept informed on both the positive aspects of Auntie's residence but also sensitively guided through the challenges of her decline through dementia and ultimate end-of-life care. We initially gasped at the fee but can honestly say that it proved worth every penny.

Kirsty Johnson

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2012

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.


In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.


I joined Hurstwood View in 2012, and that is where my journey at Barchester began.
I love to spend time with my family & friends, and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a women’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Esther Onwuka

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2025

My name is Esther Onwuka, and I joined Hurstwood View in April 2025 as Deputy Manager.


From a young age, I have always had a strong passion for caring for others, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Nursing in India. Over the course of my 4-year training, I became deeply committed to the belief that providing care and support to people is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful roles in life.


Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2016, I have gained valuable experience working in Nigeria before relocating to England during the pandemic. I spent 5 rewarding years at a nursing home in Uckfield, where I progressed from Nurse to Deputy Manager. That experience helped shape my approach to leadership and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.


I am always striving to grow both personally and professionally. This drive has recently led me to complete a Master’s degree in Public Health, and I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. My ultimate goal is to make a positive, lasting impact within my workplace, my community, and the wider world.


At Hurstwood View, my role is to support our residents, their families, and our dedicated team to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standards of care. My aim is to help create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and at home.

 I have been working in the catering industry since I was 17 years old and have been working at Hurstwood View since it opened in 2012. I first joined Hurstwood View as a trainee care practitioner. I am now working as a Care practitioner and have recently started a degree with the university of Derby for Advanced Care Practitioner. My next step will be a Nursing Degree. As a care practitioner I work closely with the General Manager, Registered Nurses, and Senior Carers to ensure that all our resident’s needs are being met and to a high standard.


I am very passionate about my job at Hurstwood View and I always ensure my work is completed to a high standard. At Hurstwood View we all take great pride in ensuring that our residents are well looked after, we spend time getting to know our residents and their relatives on a personal basis to enable us to care for them all in a person-centred way and respecting their individuality.
