Hurstwood View is located in the village of Five Ashdown near Uckfield and is on the doorstep of the breath-taking Ashdown Forest. They provide expert and person centred 24-hour nursing, residential and dementia care on their dedicated Memory Lane community, from short stays to long term care.

The home has a team of highly-qualified and attentive staff who are dedicated to focusing on the individual needs of each resident with a tailored care plan for each person. Residents are offered the right level of support for their needs, this is done with respect and always maintaining their dignity.

Their Memory Lane community is designed to support independence and stimulation for those living with dementia whilst receiving the specialist care and support they need. There are two terrace areas one if which is dedicated to gardening, themed corridors and personalised activities.

The life enrichment team has a dedicated programme and is adapted to ensure everyone is able to take part. From small group activities to large events where family can come and join in. The home is very active in the community with trips out in their mini bus to local places and welcoming the community into the home.

The hospitality team cater to all dietary requirements. All meals are nutritious and freshly prepared daily. They strive to offer an excellent dining experience to encourage appetite and the wellbeing of each resident.

My father became a resident whilst strict rules were in place regarding Covid-19. The staff dealt with this in a professional way whilst being sympathetic to my father's needs in getting settled in. I appreciate the accessibility of speaking to the staff who always have time to speak however busy they
are. I have found the general atmosphere at Hurstwood View to be a positive, friendly and welcoming home where nothing seems too much trouble.

My mother and her partner moved into the flats which are connected to Hurstwood, they were happy to have the back up of the care home and also have care in their own home. This worked really well and they quickly got to know the staff and felt very happy with their decision to move to Hurstwood. Unfortunately,
my mother's partner had a bad fall. The hospital would not let him be discharged back to the flat as he needed more care so he went into the nursing home. He was cared for very well by the staff. They were really good with him as his dementia had accelerated. The good thing was that Mother could visit him. He was treated with respect and dignity until the end. Unfortunately, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. She carried on living in the flat with the knowledge that if she needed anyone they were on hand. She really loved all the staff and built up a friendship with them. She said she couldn’t have wanted to be in a better place. Her last days were spent in the home and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Hurstwood View is a caring, supportive and wonderful place to be. My relative has had respite care there a few times now, and every time he has been there, we have had nothing but praise for the way he has been treated and looked after. He himself says he feels like royalty when he goes there and nothing
is too much trouble - if you ask for anything, he gets it immediately. We, as a family, cannot thank them enough for their compassion. He’s even looking at going again before Christmas. That says it all really.

My mother has spent eight weeks at Hurstwood View, having been transferred from Pembury hospital after a fall and a series of absent seizures. She suffers with vascular dementia. We have been delighted with the care given to Mum which has been first class from day 1. She has been made to feel very much
at home and has fitted in very well with all of the staff. Although visiting has been very limited due to the pandemic, she has been kept active and has even developed a couple of interests we didn't realise she had. Her general disposition and health has also improved and it's nice to see her smiling so much. Her birthday 'party' was made extra special when the staff brought her favourite coconut cake in and sang happy birthday to her together. Well done and thank you.

Due to my mother’s dementia issues, Adult Care sent us to Hurstwood View. On arrival when calling for an assistant my fiancée and I had to press the call bell at the main front door 4 times before anyone came.
When a care assistant came to the door we were asked to wash our hands, which we did, but
did not issue us with a face mask even though the care assistant was wearing one herself.
At this time my mother was very upset due to the unfamiliar surroundings. On entering the building there was a patient trying to sell daily papers to us which was even more confusing for my mother, there were also used plates and bowls left on the tables in the reception area.


The toilet in my mother's room had been used, urine on the floor, dirty toilet paper in the bin, no plug in the sink. The toilet seat is cracked (Health & Safety issues) (photos taken)


There were other issues that gravely concerned us and we brought our mother home.

My mother has been at Hurstwood for two years having left a large house and garden where she lived alone. At all times, the staff have treated her with dignity and respect - with humour thrown in for good measure! The home is spacious and always clean. The meals are excellent. The leadership comes from
a place of love and genuine care. To be honest, I thought it would have been impossible to find somewhere suitable for my mother, but we are so very grateful for the immeasurable love found in this place. Every resident's needs are different, but our experience has been very good. Like any community, the experience is better if you have like-minded people around you with whom you can do activities. This comes down to luck. Do take a look!

My parents have been residents at Hurstwood View Care Home for nearly two and a half years. My mother in Memory Lane and my father is a resident on the nursing floor. From the outset, they have both been treated with a kindness that made the transition from home and hospital a very comfortable one.
My sister and I greatly appreciate how accommodating the staff are and especially how we were welcomed to make their rooms feel familiar, bringing in belongings of their own, making a homely environment for them both. My sister and I always feel listened to and I would say that my parents feel the same. Respect and dignity are paramount. The many long-standing staff build many valued relationships, showing genuine care and interest in the wellbeing of the residents. Cleanliness and personal hygiene are excellent. My dad really appreciates the good food. Hurstwood View is welcoming and the beautiful setting and garden is a great asset for residents and visitors.

My mother has been a resident of Hurstwood View for over 4 years now. The manager is very caring and has built up an amazing team of staff who are very friendly, kind and professional and treat all the residents with respect.
The meals are excellent and tasty homemade cakes and biscuits are always
available. The rooms are a good size and the gardens spacious, with lovely views across the fields at the rear of the building.
During the period of lockdown due to the Covid-19 crisis, the staff have continued to give excellent care to my mother and have kept in regular contact with me regarding her health and well being. The staff have remained cheerful and positive, even though they have been working under such difficult circumstances. Skype and WhatsApp have been set up to enable families to keep in touch with their loved ones.
I feel that Mum is being very well cared for and is in a home that is safe and has a lovely warm, friendly and caring atmosphere.

My step-mother-in-law has been a resident at Hurstwood View for over 2 years. My mother-in-law has Parkinson’s disease which has affected her balance and, after several falls and a stint in the hospital, we decided that she was safer in the environment of a care home. When looking we very much liked
the size and location of Hurstwood View. We could see that every patient was receiving very personal and individual care by a dedicated staff. All my mother-in-law's needs are met to a very high standard. The staff are kind, caring and attention to every aspect of the resident’s needs with a cheerful demeanour. The rooms are bright and clean and my mother-in-law is lucky to have a room with doors opening on to a courtyard and lovely garden where she can sit. There is a weekly programme of activities and she really enjoys the exercise classes. The dining room, reception rooms and cafe are bright and spacious. The food is excellent.
Above all, my mother-in-law is very happy at Hurstwood View.

My father had spent several years in Hurstwood View where he was shown such kindness and wonderful care.
He was in his 90’s and had the start of dementia that caused him to be anxious and overactive. He loved walking around the home and with the great layout and facilities it gave him such freedom
which was important to him. Every member of staff showed him such love and respect, it really was like a big family. He loved his food and joining him at meal times occasionally was like being in a first-class restaurant along with the entertainment.
My dad ended his final days at the home and my family and I spent day and night with him. This is when you really see how good the home is: the manager and deputy manager, both nursing trained, were so hands-on, leading by example, the nurses and carers just couldn’t be faulted. They were an amazing happy team and generally passionate about their patients well -being
I honestly couldn’t wish for a better place for my dad to end his days.

I am very happy with how Hurstwood View have handled the coronavirus pandemic. There has been excellent care and nursing and good communication. In general the staff are good at their jobs, friendly, helpful and genuinely caring.

My mother has been at Hurstwood View for a little over a year and before that my father was at Hurstwood View for about two and a half years. I have therefore been visiting the home on a very regular basis for a number of years.
The home is well managed and it boasts an exceptionally good staff who
clearly care for the residents. This has been particularly evident in the challenging times over the last few months with COVID-19 where staff have gone beyond the normal call of duty to keep the residents settled and as content as possible whilst they have been unable to see their families.
The rooms are nice, a good size and pleasantly furnished. There are spacious communal areas and a cafe downstairs.
There is an excellent team who sort out the activities and friendly reception and administrative staff.
I would unhesitatingly recommend Hurstwood View to anyone looking for a care home for family or friends who are unable to remain in their own homes.

My father owns one of the apartments at Hurstwood Court and was for a long time going into the care home for his meals and to join in with the various outings and activities put on by the home. Both of these he enjoyed very much as they gave him variety and social interaction, not having any friends
in the area. In May he had a couple of falls and was moved downstairs into the care home to be looked after. The room he was offered was so lovely, bright and homely, the staff so attentive and helpful that he is now going to remain in the care home. This has been such a weight off of our minds, as out of four siblings only one of us who lives locally. Because my Dad was going downstairs for his meals he knows and recognises all of the members of staff and other residents. With Covid, I have not been able to visit my Dad, but members of staff have been calling me regularly to keep me up to date with how my dad is doing and I am confident he is very happy.

During this unprecedented time of Covid-19, the staff at Hurstwood View have gone beyond their duty as carers and adapted to take on the emotional role of supporting residents without family visits. At the start of the lockdown period, I had no idea how my father would cope without my almost daily visits.
Unable to do anything for himself, he is entirely reliant on support from others. It has been a giant leap of faith to trust that he would be cared for, physically, emotionally and mentally. I can honestly say that the care and support that my father has received has been exceptional.
The staff at Hurstwood View can be proud of themselves. They have come through the most difficult of times, caring for the lives of others in an exemplary way. Setting up communication via Skype has been brilliant. Even facilitating virtual physiotherapy sessions!
We are a lucky family to have the caring support of all the dedicated staff at Hurstwood View.

The nursing/care staff at Hurstwood View are very professional, but they are also extremely caring and treat the residents with great respect.
The rooms are spacious, and the en-suite is a good size. The food is always excellent, and the hospitality and reception staff are very accommodating and helpful.
The
manager is excellent and truly cares about all of the residents.
Hurstwood View has been particularly good at looking after everyone during this coronavirus crisis and have kept friends and family very well informed whilst we are not able to visit.

Mum has a care assisted flat and at the moment has moved to the nursing wing due to a fall and injury. We have therefore seen the wide range of care that has been available. The knowledge, care, experience and approach to patient care/dignity is excellent. The facilities and food are very good. The
only minor point would be the lack of on-site physio. The admin is very efficient.

My wife has been a resident since October 2019.
The facilities are purpose-built to a very high standard and are well maintained.
The staff work hard to build a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with good-humoured camaraderie at all times. The residents are always treated with respect.
The quality
of food is excellent, always freshly prepared, and special requests will be accommodated whenever possible. The soups and afternoon cakes are especially appreciated!
There is a good range of daily activities to keep the residents stimulated and to provide important social contact for those with a physical disability.
Ultimately for me, the key question is, "are you comfortable and happy to leave your loved one in their care?" In this case, certainly; Yes.

    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Kirsty Johnson

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.


In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.


I joined Hurstwood View in 2012, and that is where my journey at Barchester began.
I love to spend time with my family & friends, and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a women’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Esther Onwuka

My name is Esther Onwuka, and I joined Hurstwood View in April 2025 as Deputy Manager.


From a young age, I have always had a strong passion for caring for others, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Nursing in India. Over the course of my 4-year training, I became deeply committed to the belief that providing care and support to people is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful roles in life.


Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2016, I have gained valuable experience working in Nigeria before relocating to England during the pandemic. I spent 5 rewarding years at a nursing home in Uckfield, where I progressed from Nurse to Deputy Manager. That experience helped shape my approach to leadership and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.


I am always striving to grow both personally and professionally. This drive has recently led me to complete a Master’s degree in Public Health, and I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. My ultimate goal is to make a positive, lasting impact within my workplace, my community, and the wider world.


At Hurstwood View, my role is to support our residents, their families, and our dedicated team to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standards of care. My aim is to help create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and at home.

Hi, my name is Cathryn, and I joined the team at Hurstwood View in August 2017 as the Administrator.


I have worked in care home administration since 2002 and have since gained an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration.


My role includes managing the financial systems in the home, HR, enquiry management and working closely with the General Manager. My favourite part of the role is interacting with residents and their families.

Hi. My name is Karen, and I am the Head Chef here at Hurstwood View.


 I have been working in the catering industry since I was 17 years old and have been working at Hurstwood View since it opened in 2012. I simply adore cooking and love to experiment with various flavours. I love my job at Hurstwood View and it’s a privilege to meet and work with so many different people. But what I love most is when people tell me they enjoy my food!


Being Scottish I am very fond of traditional Scottish dishes which when I am cooking, love to add a different twist. I am very fortunate to live in East Sussex with my husband and daughter. Sussex is a beautiful country with many interesting and historical places to visit. I love my job at Hurstwood View and in particular it's a privilege to meet and work with so many interesting residents. But what I love most is when people tell me they enjoy my food!

Hi, my name is Demi and I have worked at Hurstwood View since 2019.


I first joined Hurstwood View as a trainee care practitioner. I am now working as a Care practitioner and have recently started a degree with the university of Derby for Advanced Care Practitioner. My next step will be a Nursing Degree. As a care practitioner I work closely with the General Manager, Registered Nurses, and Senior Carers to ensure that all our resident’s needs are being met and to a high standard.


I am very passionate about my job at Hurstwood View and I always ensure my work is completed to a high standard. At Hurstwood View we all take great pride in ensuring that our residents are well looked after, we spend time getting to know our residents and their relatives on a personal basis to enable us to care for them all in a person-centred way and respecting their individuality. At Hurstwood View we have a great support network from our General Manager – Kirsty and Barchester in general, Barchester has great progression opportunities within all departments, and they always encourage staff to progress within their career. At Hurstwood View our staff are friendly and welcoming people who are more like family than staff.

I started my career in the kitchen department then changed into a care assistant role. I have gradually worked my way up and I am now the head of unit for memory lane. I love working on memory lane and supporting our residents who are living with Dementia, in my role I take responsibility for ensuring that all our residents needs are met in the most suitable way for them. We take pride in person centred care and we value each residents differences. I always ensure that the staff working within the memory lane community are up to date with any recent changes and I also ensure that relatives are kept up to date with their loved ones ever changing needs.


At Hurstwood View we have a great team ethic, and the staff feel more like a big family rather than colleagues.
