The residents are all treated with respect and dignity. The families are always welcome and my personal experience as a family member is of a very warm welcome and it's always a pleasure to visit the care home. Communication of all the staff is excellent. My mother has been fortunate to have respite care here. The atmosphere is extremely friendly and it is clear that it is run with smooth efficiency reflecting the excellent teamwork. My mother was not in good form when she came, and the staff were wonderfully kind and understanding, encouraging her recovery and confidence. She has also enjoyed the excellent level of attention taken with the facilities and food offered. Her room is pretty and light with a lovely view. The sensitivity shown not only to my mother but also to the family during these weeks has been exemplary.

We have been delighted with the care and service of Hurstwood View care home for my Mother-in-law. The staff is fantastic and goes well beyond the call of duty when it comes to looking after the residents. My Mother-in-law has settled in very well and seems very happy and content. My family and I feel confident she is getting the dementia care that she so desperately needs.

From the manager through to all staff on all levels there is a superb caring attitude both to residents and to their families.
Everyone is always cheerful.
Each resident is known by name by every member of staff and treated with care and respect.
The food is very good and individual tastes are catered for.

Overall an excellent home for residents and importantly peace of mind for family, knowing their loved one is so well cared for.

I am a member of the Newtown Arts Collective who take turns to display their art work in the cafe/seating area in the foyer of Hurstwood View.

Staff and management have always been very welcoming. We have received some sponsorship too to help us hold an exhibition in Brighton in September 2017.

Light, airy and cheery is the immediate impression on entry to Hurstwood View. The design and layout seems more akin to a cruise ship with rooms broken up with lounges and café style living areas. It is all new for me and my family, but the level of service most worth caring is about is that the staff and service "know my mum" and meet her needs.

I have looked at many care homes in the area and my father has been in a couple for respite. Hurstwood View is by far the best we have used and viewed. It is clean, friendly and the food is very good. Everyone knows all the residents by name, the staff are always happy and nothing seems too much trouble. Nursing care is good and the care for the relatives seems to be just as important which can be so critical when moving a loved family member into a care home.

My mother was in Hurstwood View for nearly four years until her death in July. She was very happy there and was treated with love, care, respect and patience. Her health deteriorated in the last few months whereby she needed extra help. This was given without complaint at any time of the day or night. The staff all treated the family with great compassion when she died.

It is hard to fault Hurstwood View who have offered a consistently high standard of care to my mother for the duration of her time there. They managed her final days with dignity and respect and looked after us all as a family during a difficult time. The nursing and health care assistants without exception were wonderful and feel like members of our extended family while retaining their professional boundaries. The touches we most appreciated were little things like offering a glass of sherry before lunch, beautiful homemade cakes, wide ranging activities and a truly homely atmosphere.

My husband moved to Hurstwood View in January 2017.
Every effort was made to settle him and he is very happy there.
All the staff have been very kind and helpful, the care he receives could not be better.
The family visit very regularly and are always welcomed.

One criticism - very sorry the memory boxes have been removed from bedroom doors, but this is minor in light of the care that is given.

We were anxious when we left my mother-in-law for respite care in the home as she was quite reluctant to stay. The Manager and her team quickly made my mother-in-law their priority, attending to her needs and at the same time, they reassured myself and my husband that she is in safe hands. The staff are always smiling and can not do enough to help. The home is in a beautiful location and each room has a lovely view of the surrounding fields. The home is clean and it really does feel like a home from home.

We were very impressed how the Home Manager assessed my mother-in-law's needs and the support she would need when she returned home. After visiting my mother-in-law, we were so happy to see her smiling and engaging with the other residents. Her hair had been washed and set. Without any hesitation, if my mother-in-law needs a home in the future we will use Hurstwood. They have respected my mother-in-law's dignity at all times.

Thank you to the Home Manager and Barchester they are a credit to the industry.

My mother has been a resident on Memory Lane for 2 years and after initially researching a number of homes, we have been extremely pleased with Hurstwood View which came highly recommended by a very close friend.
The standard of care is extremely good and the staff are very caring and soon got to know my mother's likes and dislikes which is evident with their interaction with her. She is treated with utmost dignity and respect.
The food is excellent and the facilities are very good, bright and airy. The café area downstairs is a great place to sit and have coffee and cake and chat with residents, staff and other relatives. The gardens are now well kept and very pleasant.
Except for the odd occasion when they are overstretched, management and staff will make themselves available to discuss my mother's care and any concerns or issues.

Mum has been extremely well looked after and I firmly believe she wouldn't have still been with us were it not for the care and attention she receives.

Overall Experience
My mother was a resident of Memory Lane for the last two years of her life. The facilities are excellent - the rooms are large and bright and for the most part kept clean and tidy. The regular staff were wonderful and work well, although they often seemed to be too busy to spend enough time with the residents, but when they did interact with my mother they did so in a lovely way, demonstrating their knowledge of her as an individual. The activities offered are good, but would benefit from additional support staff so more residents can take part and have attention - something that my mother craved and enjoyed as it gave her reassurance and comfort.

I would have liked to have had the opportunity to talk on a formal and regular basis with a member of staff to specifically review my mother's care, perhaps every 3 months. On a weekly regular visit, there was far too often no one available to talk to in any depth. Communication is vital and for relatives, it is also empowering.

My brother has been extremely happy since entering Barchester Hurstwood View Care Home 22 months ago. The care and consideration of the staff are first class, always kind and sympathetic and mindful of his needs. His physical health has deteriorated, no doubt because of his advancing age, but his mental status remains the same as when he entered the home, for which we are thankful. The laundry is a problem, lost items etc. But I understand this is the same problem throughout care homes.

I believe my father's basic needs are satisfied eg warmth, food, toileting.

However, I am not sure that his mental health and the need for companionship is met. There have been several changes in staff and I am not sure that the ratios are good enough for the care of people with dementia who require time with caregivers to talk. He is not taken out or taken into the garden which is what we discussed when we first chose the home. Many of the staff are pleasant and do genuinely seem to care but they are always in a rush and have so little time.

Kirsty JohnsonJob Title:General ManagerJoined: 2012

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.

In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.

I joined Hurstwood View in 2012, and that is where my journey at Barchester began.

I love to spend time with my family & friends, and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a women’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Esther Onwuka

My name is Esther Onwuka, and I joined Hurstwood View in April 2025 as Deputy Manager.

From a young age, I have always had a strong passion for caring for others, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Nursing in India. Over the course of my 4-year training, I became deeply committed to the belief that providing care and support to people is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful roles in life.

Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2016, I have gained valuable experience working in Nigeria before relocating to England during the pandemic. I spent 5 rewarding years at a nursing home in Uckfield, where I progressed from Nurse to Deputy Manager. That experience helped shape my approach to leadership and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.

I am always striving to grow both personally and professionally. This drive has recently led me to complete a Master’s degree in Public Health, and I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. My ultimate goal is to make a positive, lasting impact within my workplace, my community, and the wider world.

At Hurstwood View, my role is to support our residents, their families, and our dedicated team to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standards of care. I aim to help create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and at home.

If you visit us, you will likely see me walking around with a big smile, and I look forward to welcoming you in person.
