Hurstwood View is located in the village of Five Ashdown near Uckfield and is on the doorstep of the breath-taking Ashdown Forest. They provide expert and person centred 24-hour nursing, residential and dementia care on their dedicated Memory Lane community, from short stays to long term care.

The home has a team of highly-qualified and attentive staff who are dedicated to focusing on the individual needs of each resident with a tailored care plan for each person. Residents are offered the right level of support for their needs, this is done with respect and always maintaining their dignity.

Their Memory Lane community is designed to support independence and stimulation for those living with dementia whilst receiving the specialist care and support they need. There are two terrace areas one if which is dedicated to gardening, themed corridors and personalised activities.

The life enrichment team has a dedicated programme and is adapted to ensure everyone is able to take part. From small group activities to large events where family can come and join in. The home is very active in the community with trips out in their mini bus to local places and welcoming the community into the home.

The hospitality team cater to all dietary requirements. All meals are nutritious and freshly prepared daily. They strive to offer an excellent dining experience to encourage appetite and the wellbeing of each resident.

My husband moved to Hurstwood View in January 2017.
Every effort was made to settle him and he is very happy there.
All the staff have been very kind and helpful, the care he receives could not be better.
The family visit very regularly and are always welcomed.
One criticism - very sorry the
memory boxes have been removed from bedroom doors, but this is minor in light of the care that is given.

We were anxious when we left my mother-in-law for respite care in the home as she was quite reluctant to stay. The Manager and her team quickly made my mother-in-law their priority, attending to her needs and at the same time, they reassured myself and my husband that she is in safe hands. The staff
are always smiling and can not do enough to help. The home is in a beautiful location and each room has a lovely view of the surrounding fields. The home is clean and it really does feel like a home from home.


We were very impressed how the Home Manager assessed my mother-in-law's needs and the support she would need when she returned home. After visiting my mother-in-law, we were so happy to see her smiling and engaging with the other residents. Her hair had been washed and set. Without any hesitation, if my mother-in-law needs a home in the future we will use Hurstwood. They have respected my mother-in-law's dignity at all times.


Thank you to the Home Manager and Barchester they are a credit to the industry.

My mother has been a resident on Memory Lane for 2 years and after initially researching a number of homes, we have been extremely pleased with Hurstwood View which came highly recommended by a very close friend.
The standard of care is extremely good and the staff are very caring and soon got to know
my mother's likes and dislikes which is evident with their interaction with her. She is treated with utmost dignity and respect.
The food is excellent and the facilities are very good, bright and airy. The café area downstairs is a great place to sit and have coffee and cake and chat with residents, staff and other relatives. The gardens are now well kept and very pleasant.
Except for the odd occasion when they are overstretched, management and staff will make themselves available to discuss my mother's care and any concerns or issues.
Mum has been extremely well looked after and I firmly believe she wouldn't have still been with us were it not for the care and attention she receives.

This is a very pleasant care home in a well-landscaped setting. The atmosphere is informal, yet smart. Access and ergonomics are good. Staff appear calm and capable and are welcoming and supportive. The fees are expensive.

My mother was a resident of Memory Lane for the last two years of her life. The facilities are excellent - the rooms are large and bright and for the most part kept clean and tidy. The regular staff were wonderful and work well, although they often seemed to be too busy to spend enough time with the
residents, but when they did interact with my mother they did so in a lovely way, demonstrating their knowledge of her as an individual. The activities offered are good, but would benefit from additional support staff so more residents can take part and have attention - something that my mother craved and enjoyed as it gave her reassurance and comfort.
I would have liked to have had the opportunity to talk on a formal and regular basis with a member of staff to specifically review my mother's care, perhaps every 3 months. On a weekly regular visit, there was far too often no one available to talk to in any depth. Communication is vital and for relatives, it is also empowering.

My brother has been extremely happy since entering Barchester Hurstwood View Care Home 22 months ago. The care and consideration of the staff are first class, always kind and sympathetic and mindful of his needs. His physical health has deteriorated, no doubt because of his advancing age, but his mental
status remains the same as when he entered the home, for which we are thankful. The laundry is a problem, lost items etc. But I understand this is the same problem throughout care homes.

I believe my father's basic needs are satisfied eg warmth, food, toileting.
However, I am not sure that his mental health and the need for companionship is met. There have been several changes in staff and I am not sure that the ratios are good enough for the care of people with dementia who require
time with caregivers to talk. He is not taken out or taken into the garden which is what we discussed when we first chose the home. Many of the staff are pleasant and do genuinely seem to care but they are always in a rush and have so little time.

Very helpful and hard-working staff. They will do their very best under often challenging circumstances to help residents and family alike.
It's great to visit the Cafe area when you feel like a chat or a coffee, nice atmosphere and access to staff and management when needed. Keep up the great work!

My mother has been in the home for 15 months and always seems content, clean and tidy and well cared for. Staff seem very caring and genuinely interested in the residents. The home itself always has a bright, warm and very clean feel to it and a welcoming nature. Medical intervention when necessary
has been sought swiftly and so all in all I am very happy with the home.

My 88 year old Mum lives in one of the "assisted living" flats attached to Hurstwood View and, after a few wobbles in 2015 when she moved in, is now "very content." Mum has mild to moderate dementia but the staff do an excellent job of enabling her to keep the right balance of independence. A change
of Manager last year has put in place strong leadership and I'm confient in giving Hurstwood View an excellent rating.

After a very bad year, the new management are getting things under control. Staffing is still a problem with many agency staff still used.
The permanent staff often seem overwhelmed. There are more residents who are very sick now and the more able ones appear to be having less time.
Food is excellent.
Activities need improvement many things don't happen. I would like to see more quizzes, games and important activities involving movement and more outings.

My husband had 2 and a half months of care and kindness at Hurstwood View. His room was sunny and cheerful, he had a very pleasant view over the fields. The food was appetising and hot. Altogether his trial months were in a very good atmosphere.

Absolutely wonderful home, I couldn't wish for a better home for my friend.
The staff are so warm and welcoming and the manager also makes the effort to come out to chat with the residents and visitors.

Hurstwood View is purpose built with excellent facilities but above all, it is a warm, caring and friendly home. There is a bright, comfortable cafe area where people meet and get to know one another over a hot drink and delicious homemade cakes and biscuits. There is always a lovely atmosphere here.
The food is excellent with a very good menu choice- something to tempt everyone. The residents are treated with dignity and kindness by the staff who take the trouble to really get to know them. I, as a relative, have received great support from the staff and am always made to feel welcome.

My Mother has been at the home for nearly four years and at that time her care has been excellent. However, in the past month, the staff have gone beyond excellent in making sure that she is happy, safe, dignified, and loved. I cannot imagine her being anywhere else, and I am truly glad that I chose

Kirsty Johnson

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2012

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.


In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.


I joined Hurstwood View in 2012, and that is where my journey at Barchester began.
I love to spend time with my family & friends, and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a women’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Esther Onwuka

My name is Esther Onwuka, and I joined Hurstwood View in April 2025 as Deputy Manager.


From a young age, I have always had a strong passion for caring for others, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Nursing in India. Over the course of my 4-year training, I became deeply committed to the belief that providing care and support to people is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful roles in life.


Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2016, I have gained valuable experience working in Nigeria before relocating to England during the pandemic. I spent 5 rewarding years at a nursing home in Uckfield, where I progressed from Nurse to Deputy Manager. That experience helped shape my approach to leadership and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.


I am always striving to grow both personally and professionally. This drive has recently led me to complete a Master’s degree in Public Health, and I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. My ultimate goal is to make a positive, lasting impact within my workplace, my community, and the wider world.


At Hurstwood View, my role is to support our residents, their families, and our dedicated team to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standards of care. My aim is to help create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and at home.

I have worked in care home administration since 2002 and have since gained an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration.


My role includes managing the financial systems in the home, HR, enquiry management and working closely with the General Manager. My favourite part of the role is interacting with residents and their families.

Hi. My name is Karen, and I am the Head Chef here at Hurstwood View.


 I have been working in the catering industry since I was 17 years old and have been working at Hurstwood View since it opened in 2012. I simply adore cooking and love to experiment with various flavours. I love my job at Hurstwood View and it’s a privilege to meet and work with so many different people. But what I love most is when people tell me they enjoy my food!


Being Scottish I am very fond of traditional Scottish dishes which when I am cooking, love to add a different twist. I am very fortunate to live in East Sussex with my husband and daughter. Sussex is a beautiful country with many interesting and historical places to visit. I love my job at Hurstwood View and in particular it's a privilege to meet and work with so many interesting residents. But what I love most is when people tell me they enjoy my food!

Hi, my name is Demi and I have worked at Hurstwood View since 2019.


I first joined Hurstwood View as a trainee care practitioner. I am now working as a Care practitioner and have recently started a degree with the university of Derby for Advanced Care Practitioner. My next step will be a Nursing Degree. As a care practitioner I work closely with the General Manager, Registered Nurses, and Senior Carers to ensure that all our resident’s needs are being met and to a high standard.


I am very passionate about my job at Hurstwood View and I always ensure my work is completed to a high standard. At Hurstwood View we all take great pride in ensuring that our residents are well looked after, we spend time getting to know our residents and their relatives on a personal basis to enable us to care for them all in a person-centred way and respecting their individuality. At Hurstwood View we have a great support network from our General Manager – Kirsty and Barchester in general, Barchester has great progression opportunities within all departments, and they always encourage staff to progress within their career. At Hurstwood View our staff are friendly and welcoming people who are more like family than staff.

Hi, my name is Zoe and I have worked at Hurstwood View since 2013.


I started my career in the kitchen department then changed into a care assistant role. I have gradually worked my way up and I am now the head of unit for memory lane. I love working on memory lane and supporting our residents who are living with Dementia, in my role I take responsibility for ensuring that all our residents needs are met in the most suitable way for them. We take pride in person centred care and we value each residents differences. I always ensure that the staff working within the memory lane community are up to date with any recent changes and I also ensure that relatives are kept up to date with their loved ones ever changing needs.


At Hurstwood View we have a great team ethic, and the staff feel more like a big family rather than colleagues.

Hurstwood View has such a friendly atmosphere and the staff are very good at making light in difficult situations. I can mostly be found with the Karaoke machine singing into the microphone in a room full of residents.
