Overview

The Review Score of 9.7 (maximum of 10) for Barchester Hurstwood View is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 49 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Barchester Hurstwood View in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.724 for Barchester Hurstwood View is calculated as follows: ( (441 Excellents x 5) + (119 Goods x 4) + (16 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 579 Ratings = 4.724

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Hurstwood View is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 11 positive Reviews (55 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 15 Reviews ÷ 11 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My mother has been fortunate to have respite care here. The atmosphere is extremely friendly and it is clear that it is run with smooth efficiency reflecting the excellent teamwork. My mother was not in good form when she came, and the staff were wonderfully kind and understanding, encouraging her recovery and confidence. She has also enjoyed the excellent level of attention taken with the facilities and food offered. Her room is pretty and light with a lovely view. The sensitivity shown not only to my mother but also to the family during these weeks has been exemplary.

Thank you for taking the time to leave positive feedback relating to your recent experience at Hurstwood View Care Home. Barchester strives to make residents and visitors feel welcome and the comments we receive help us to continue to improve our services. It's been a pleasure looking after your Mum in the recent weeks.

We have been delighted with the care and service of Hurstwood View care home for my Mother-in-law. The staff is fantastic and goes well beyond the call of duty when it comes to looking after the residents. My Mother-in-law has settled in very well and seems very happy and content. My family and I feel confident she is getting the dementia care that she so desperately needs.

Thank you Victoria and it was lovely to meet all the family at the weekend.

I am a member of the Newtown Arts Collective who take turns to display their art work in the cafe/seating area in the foyer of Hurstwood View.
Staff and management have always been very welcoming. We have received some sponsorship too to help us hold an exhibition in Brighton in September 2017.

An extremely caring home.
Staff are very able and very caring.
From the manager through to all staff on all levels there is a superb caring attitude both to residents and to their families.
Everyone is always cheerful.
Each resident is known by name by every member of staff and treated with care and respect.
The food is very good and individual tastes are catered for.
Overall an excellent home for residents and importantly peace of mind for family, knowing their loved one is so well cared for.

Light, airy and cheery is the immediate impression on entry to Hurstwood View. The design and layout seems more akin to a cruise ship with rooms broken up with lounges and café style living areas. It is all new for me and my family, but the level of service most worth caring is about is that the staff and service "know my mum" and meet her needs.

Thank you Bryan and I especially like the reference to a cruise ship.

I have looked at many care homes in the area and my father has been in a couple for respite. Hurstwood View is by far the best we have used and viewed. It is clean, friendly and the food is very good. Everyone knows all the residents by name, the staff are always happy and nothing seems too much trouble. Nursing care is good and the care for the relatives seems to be just as important which can be so critical when moving a loved family member into a care home.

My mother was in Hurstwood View for nearly four years until her death in July. She was very happy there and was treated with love, care, respect and patience. Her health deteriorated in the last few months whereby she needed extra help. This was given without complaint at any time of the day or night. The staff all treated the family with great compassion when she died.

It is hard to fault Hurstwood View who have offered a consistently high standard of care to my mother for the duration of her time there. They managed her final days with dignity and respect and looked after us all as a family during a difficult time. The nursing and health care assistants without exception were wonderful and feel like members of our extended family while retaining their professional boundaries. The touches we most appreciated were little things like offering a glass of sherry before lunch, beautiful homemade cakes, wide ranging activities and a truly homely atmosphere.

My husband moved to Hurstwood View in January 2017.
Every effort was made to settle him and he is very happy there.
All the staff have been very kind and helpful, the care he receives could not be better.
The family visit very regularly and are always welcomed.
One criticism - very sorry the memory boxes have been removed from bedroom doors, but this is minor in light of the care that is given.

We were anxious when we left my mother-in-law for respite care in the home as she was quite reluctant to stay. The Manager and her team quickly made my mother-in-law their priority, attending to her needs and at the same time, they reassured myself and my husband that she is in safe hands. The staff are always smiling and can not do enough to help. The home is in a beautiful location and each room has a lovely view of the surrounding fields. The home is clean and it really does feel like a home from home.

We were very impressed how the Home Manager assessed my mother-in-law's needs and the support she would need when she returned home. After visiting my mother-in-law, we were so happy to see her smiling and engaging with the other residents. Her hair had been washed and set. Without any hesitation, if my mother-in-law needs a home in the future we will use Hurstwood. They have respected my mother-in-law's dignity at all times.

Thank you to the Home Manager and Barchester they are a credit to the industry.

Thank you Tina for your feedback, it is always good to hear the positives in the service we have provided. Your Mother-in-Law would be welcome to comer back to us anytime in the future including for a coffee and cake visit.

My mother has been a resident on Memory Lane for 2 years and after initially researching a number of homes, we have been extremely pleased with Hurstwood View which came highly recommended by a very close friend.
The standard of care is extremely good and the staff are very caring and soon got to know my mother's likes and dislikes which is evident with their interaction with her. She is treated with utmost dignity and respect.
The food is excellent and the facilities are very good, bright and airy. The café area downstairs is a great place to sit and have coffee and cake and chat with residents, staff and other relatives. The gardens are now well kept and very pleasant.
Except for the odd occasion when they are overstretched, management and staff will make themselves available to discuss my mother's care and any concerns or issues.
Mum has been extremely well looked after and I firmly believe she wouldn't have still been with us were it not for the care and attention she receives.

Sam Kirwan, General Manager at Barchester Hurstwood View responded to this review on 27 Apr 2017:

Thank you for your feedback Tim and taking the time to review the home.

My mother was a resident of Memory Lane for the last two years of her life. The facilities are excellent - the rooms are large and bright and for the most part kept clean and tidy. The regular staff were wonderful and work well, although they often seemed to be too busy to spend enough time with the residents, but when they did interact with my mother they did so in a lovely way, demonstrating their knowledge of her as an individual. The activities offered are good, but would benefit from additional support staff so more residents can take part and have attention - something that my mother craved and enjoyed as it gave her reassurance and comfort.
I would have liked to have had the opportunity to talk on a formal and regular basis with a member of staff to specifically review my mother's care, perhaps every 3 months. On a weekly regular visit, there was far too often no one available to talk to in any depth. Communication is vital and for relatives, it is also empowering.

Thank you, Mara, for your positive feedback and the points you have made will be taken into consideration.

My brother has been extremely happy since entering Barchester Hurstwood View Care Home 22 months ago. The care and consideration of the staff are first class, always kind and sympathetic and mindful of his needs. His physical health has deteriorated, no doubt because of his advancing age, but his mental status remains the same as when he entered the home, for which we are thankful. The laundry is a problem, lost items etc. But I understand this is the same problem throughout care homes.

Thank you for your support in reviewing the home.

I believe my father's basic needs are satisfied eg warmth, food, toileting.
However, I am not sure that his mental health and the need for companionship is met. There have been several changes in staff and I am not sure that the ratios are good enough for the care of people with dementia who require time with caregivers to talk. He is not taken out or taken into the garden which is what we discussed when we first chose the home. Many of the staff are pleasant and do genuinely seem to care but they are always in a rush and have so little time.

My mother has been in the home for 15 months and always seems content, clean and tidy and well cared for. Staff seem very caring and genuinely interested in the residents. The home itself always has a bright, warm and very clean feel to it and a welcoming nature. Medical intervention when necessary has been sought swiftly and so all in all I am very happy with the home.

My 88 year old Mum lives in one of the "assisted living" flats attached to Hurstwood View and, after a few wobbles in 2015 when she moved in, is now "very content." Mum has mild to moderate dementia but the staff do an excellent job of enabling her to keep the right balance of independence. A change of Manager last year has put in place strong leadership and I'm confient in giving Hurstwood View an excellent rating.

After a very bad year, the new management are getting things under control. Staffing is still a problem with many agency staff still used.
The permanent staff often seem overwhelmed. There are more residents who are very sick now and the more able ones appear to be having less time.
Food is excellent. Activities need improvement many things don't happen. I would like to see more quizzes, games and important activities involving movement and more outings.

Hurstwood View is purpose built with excellent facilities but above all, it is a warm, caring and friendly home. There is a bright, comfortable cafe area where people meet and get to know one another over a hot drink and delicious homemade cakes and biscuits. There is always a lovely atmosphere here. The food is excellent with a very good menu choice- something to tempt everyone. The residents are treated with dignity and kindness by the staff who take the trouble to really get to know them. I, as a relative, have received great support from the staff and am always made to feel welcome.

Thank you Jane.

I visit Hurstwood view regularly with my daughter. The home is always clean and tidy and the staff very friendly. There are always toys available for my little girl to play with which is helpful. The staff on Memory Lane are always welcoming and it's comforting to know that our loved ones are cared for by caring, knowledgeable staff. I'd recommend this home, particularly for their specialist dementia unit. It's like home from home. Well done Hurstwood.

I visited recently and was very impressed by the warmth and care shown to the residents, particularly by the manager and the nurses. The home provides great entertainment - some of the singers are fabulous - and the people I know there have really enjoyed the animals when they've come to visit. I'm grateful to know my loved one is in a place where the food is enjoyable and the surroundings pleasing, but it is mainly the caring attitudes of the staff which makes Hurstwood such a positive place.

Thank you.

We have been very happy with Hurstwood Court so far. The staff have been very flexible regarding my father's level of care and nothing has been too big a job for them. The place is always clean and there is always a happy and positive atmosphere about the place.

As a musical performer we have always been given a very warm welcome at Hurstwood Court and staff are always very grateful for our efforts. Thanks!

Thank you Jon, it is always a pleasure to look after your Dad.

My mother has been living in the assisted apartments for over 2 years now. Within that time the staff have done their utmost to cater for her needs as the years have gone by. The facilities are excellent and everybody is welcoming and supportive within the home. I highly recommend it to anyone.

My mother was at Hurstwood View from the time it opened in September 2012. She was very well cared for in the Memory Lane Unit. This was now "her home" which she came to call it.
Staff really looked after her especially at the end of her life.
I get great comfort still going in to teach the residents keep fit.

Sam Kirwan, General Manager at Barchester Hurstwood View responded to this review on 26 Jan 2017:

Thank you.

My husband has been in the home since may having initially gone for respite care only. It took a while for him to settle (and for me to adjust) but he is now extremely settled and well cared for, better than I could at home. The staff, both carers, auxiliary, kitchen etc are all very cheerful and helpful. The carers take the time to get to know the residents and their likes/dislikes etc and the residents are never pressured to do anything they do not want to do. Visiting times are not limited and you are always made to feel welcome. The food is good and always varied. Tea and coffee are readily available, and cake/biscuits. My weekday visits are restricted to evenings so I do not see the activities but get reports from the carers when I visit in the evening or phone. I do feel there could be more activities on memory lane rather than downstairs. I think the laundry service could be improved. Sometimes the cleanliness could be improved, empty cups/plates etc removed from the lounge.

After several months spent in various hospitals, my Dad was so happy to have such a lovely place to call home. He appreciated the beautiful view from his window and established a good rapport with his carers. He told us that he hoped he could stay there until the end of his days. As his family we were made to feel very welcome at whatever time we called to see Dad and encouraged to help ourselves to tea and coffee and homemade biscuits and cake. The rooms are all individually decorated, warm, and well equipped with good quality furniture, and there are several attractive and comfortable lounge areas. Most important of all, the staff are so caring towards the residents and helpful and welcoming to the residents' families. The residents are treated with kindness, patience and dignity.

Overall, I would not hesitate in rating the home as excellent.

The first thing that struck me about Hurstwood View is that it has a lovely welcoming and positive atmosphere and is not like other care homes I have looked at.
It is purpose built and very well laid out so everything feels visible and open.
The position of the home, the decor and and lovely garden and views make it feel like home from home. The staff are very caring and organised, thanks to a compassionate and strong management team. All queries are taken seriously, recorded and dealt with.
The food is restaurant quality and no one is ever short of tea and cake!
I would very much recommend this care home to others for respite or permanent stays.

Sam Kirwan, General Manager at Barchester Hurstwood View responded to this review on 10 Aug 2016:

Thank you Edwina, it was a pleasure looking after your Mum.

My father has been in Hurstwood View for one month having initially gone for two weeks respite.
My sister and I have been looking for a care home for a while and responded to a mail drop by this home. The moment we walked through the door we knew it would be suitable. Even though we hadn't made an appointment the manager took time to give us a comprehensive tour and we were extremely impressed by the standard of the rooms, the communal areas, the outside space and also the friendliness of all the staff.
My father is settling in well. There is no pressure put on him to do anything he doesn't want to, he is always treated with respect and he particularly enjoys the high standard of the food.

Richard, Administrator at Barchester Hurstwood View responded to this review on 21 Jul 2016:

Thank you Susan for your glowing referral. So pleased that dad has settled in so well!

I had just over two weeks respite care at my own request, on leaving hospital. All went smoothly thanks to the home's team liaising with the hospital staff. Hartswood met my needs admirably, giving me a relaxed background to convalesce and prepare to return to an independent life. Full support was clearly there if I needed it but I appreciated the "hands off" approach and lack of "regime". The staff were outstanding and I admired their commitment especially to the most needy residents. The surroundings are most agreeable and the building well appointed.

I visited Barchester Hurstwood View last week to see if it was a suitable place for my father who suffers with dementia. Although we have now decided to move my Dad closer to us in Wales, I was very impressed with the ambience and facilities of the home. The Manager was extremely helpful and took time to show us around and explain the day to day care we could expect for Dad. All the staff we met were very pleasant and the few we spoke to seemed very experienced in dementia care, and also very caring and understanding for individual needs. Everywhere in the home looked spotless and the communal lounges looked very welcoming and well thought out. To be honest, I'd put my name down now if I could!

I have marked the options as excellent as I was unable to submit my comments without completing each one, but this is purely based on an hour's visit.

My grandmother was a very reluctant to go into a care home and the staff have been brilliant at reassuring her and talking to her. All the staff are very friendly and take plenty of time to talk and spend time with you.
The home is absoloutley lovely - very clean and spacious. I have had meals here and the food is of a very high standard with plenty of choice.

Job Title: General Manager

Description:

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.
In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud about what I do.
I joined Hurstwood View in 2012 - and that is where my journey at Barchester began.
I love to spend time with my family & friends and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a woman’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Description:

My name is Sarah and I am the Head of Unit on Memory Lane. I started a career in care from the age of 15, working in a kitchen at a local nursing home, providing teas and coffees to the residents. From there, I developed my interest in helping people; I worked in various homes around Crowborough supporting the elderly. My career has taken me to different countries, where I have provided support for all different kinds of people. I spent most of my career working in a psychiatric hospital, providing rehabilitation to men and juveniles with acquired brain injuries and mental health problems. I then began working with the homeless, and it was there that I completed my Level 3 in Health and Social Care and developed my leadership skills.
Following my return to England, I began working with the elderly again, and took on the role of a Senior Care Assistant in a residential home, but felt that I needed to utilize my qualifications and experience to further my career, so after I finished my maternity leave, I came aboard the Barchester ship and am now settling into Memory Lane here at Hurstwood View.
In my spare time, I love being with my family and am a keen musician! I have been playing the drums for a number of years and taught students for a time, also. My claim to fame was being in a semi-professional band in Northern Ireland. We played various gigs, including Party in the Park, and we supported Thin Lizzy and Paul McCartney's Wings!

My name is Martin Harle and I am the Head Chef at Hurstwood View.
I have 40 years’ experience in the catering industry. It was in September 2012 when I helped to open Hurstwood View and I have enjoyed every minute of my work here. Working with fresh produce is both rewarding and interesting and helps me create seasonal menus which our residents enjoy very much. I also work with a very professional team that are both friendly and willing to support me in the day to day running of the kitchen. Hurstwood View is a beautiful place to work but more importantly offers excellent care, our home is also upbeat and we have lots of fun.
Staff and residents interact very well and there is very much a family feel to Hurstwood View. We also enjoy visits from family members who enjoy the ambience of Hurstwood View and the food. We have a full activities programme at our home and trips out, this all adds to the life we all experience here. In my spare time I like to go fishing, watch football. I am also a keen DIY person.

Hi, my name is Wayne and I am the Maintenance Manager at Hurstwood View.
I started of running my own business in dealing with phones, this was for 4 years before I decided that I wanted to move into another career.
I worked in the hospitality field for 12 years at Heaver Hotel, the job involve ensuring that the conferencing facility and 90 bed hotel was run appropriately. I gained experience in customer care, health & safety and the wellbeing of the guests. I was facing the possibility of redundancy and when researching for a job, I saw the position at Barchester Hurstwood View and thought that I would take a chance and the opportunity and benefits that Barchester were offering gave me the push to apply. As I want to progress into higher management with Barchester and this sounded like the company that I could grow within.
The chance to have contact with the residents and the interaction is so great, when working at Hurstwood, no day is the same. It is also good to have resident’s ask me to deal with an issue within their room and have a little chat with them at the same time. I am enjoying working part of such a diverse team and ensuring the presentation and safety of the home is paramount in my day to day responsibilities.
During my time working at Heaver Hotel, I was voted Employee of Month, then Employee of the Site for the year and then got flown to Portugal and came 2nd in the finals of the Employee Recognition programme and was awarded £2,500.00. This money I then used to pay for my honeymoon to the Dominican Republic.
