Hurstwood View is located in the village of Five Ashdown near Uckfield and is on the doorstep of the breath-taking Ashdown Forest. They provide expert and person centred 24-hour nursing, residential and dementia care on their dedicated Memory Lane community, from short stays to long term care.

The home has a team of highly-qualified and attentive staff who are dedicated to focusing on the individual needs of each resident with a tailored care plan for each person. Residents are offered the right level of support for their needs, this is done with respect and always maintaining their dignity.

Their Memory Lane community is designed to support independence and stimulation for those living with dementia whilst receiving the specialist care and support they need. There are two terrace areas one if which is dedicated to gardening, themed corridors and personalised activities.

The life enrichment team has a dedicated programme and is adapted to ensure everyone is able to take part. From small group activities to large events where family can come and join in. The home is very active in the community with trips out in their mini bus to local places and welcoming the community into the home.

The hospitality team cater to all dietary requirements. All meals are nutritious and freshly prepared daily. They strive to offer an excellent dining experience to encourage appetite and the wellbeing of each resident.

I have recently moved Mum from another nursing home and I am so pleased I did. Hurstwood View is amazing. The level of care is really good, the place is always clean and tidy and has a lovely relaxed feeling. Well done all.

My father-in-law spent the last 4 days of his life at Hurstwood. He received exceptional care from all staff. He consistently told us how wonderful the staff were and how well he was being cared for.
The care home is beautiful with lovely clean rooms, gardens, and facilities. It’s incredibly peaceful
and the staff are so kind, friendly, helpful and supportive. Our family can’t extend our thanks enough to the managers who went above and beyond to make sure he was as comfortable as possible and they were so kind and supportive to our family.
They sorted all the formalities for us so we didn’t have to worry about anything. They even came to the funeral which meant so much to us.
I cannot recommend this care home enough - My father-in-law's last few days were happy, comfortable, and he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Thank you Hurstwood so much from all of us for everything you did for him and the family, we will forever be eternally grateful.

My mother stayed at Hurstwood View for the last 4 months of her life and I am pleased to be able to write a very favourable review. My mother suffered from both Alzheimer’s and ill health and needed a lot of care. The staff couldn’t have been kinder or more compassionate, I was extremely impressed
with the care given to my mother - she was treasured and looked after at a time when she needed it most. As well as caring for her physical needs, the staff took special care to get to know my Mum and made sure to spend time chatting and laughing with her, ensuring that her dignity remained intact at the most difficult time of her life. The staff were quick to act when required - if medical care was needed or a hospital visit, and kept me informed at all times as to what was going on. My mother died at Hurstwood - and I couldn’t have asked for more support, kindness and care for either my mother or myself when the time came. Highly recommended indeed!

My husband has been at Hurstwood View from 23/6/2019, and myself and family have nothing but praise for the place. Where to start? On entry, the atmosphere is welcoming, calm, (vibrant at the right time of day), a pleasure to be in. The staff.... dedicated, vibrant, considerate, caring, super!
I travel
from the Lake District and I know that between my visits that he is in the best place for care. The manager, nurses, all carers, cooks, cleaners, maintenance deserve full marks for their dedication.

I am only able to visit for a few days every month or so but have seen my father improve overall in wellbeing due to the respectful care and attention he receives. The whole atmosphere in the home is calm, clean and bright with tasteful and up to date furnishings. The rooms allow direct access outside
giving a feeling of openness. Various lounges allow quiet space and family privacy if desired. Food is excellent and looks and smells very tempting utilising local produce when in season. The home has a calm and relaxing feeling and is pleasant for residents and visitors. An amazing daily entertainment schedule is available for those who wish, and celebrations and events are always marked and enjoyed. The youthful carers and management bring a lovely atmosphere to the residents.

The building is wonderful but it's the staff that make it such a good care home. Everyone is positive, happy and well trained and I mean everyone. Such a relief to have a family member stay here at Hurstwood View. Highly recommend and the food is also brilliant.

I visited a friend who is a resident here. I was met by the area training manager who showed me to the lounge, dining area until we located my friend.
My observations were that the staff were friendly and kind, plenty on hand and security very good.
My only other observation was that my friend's coat
was not clean.

A home which I am only a temporary resident due to a nervous breakdown. I am enjoying a very happy time here (for 2months) with wonderful staff for whom nothing is too much trouble and have, after a few weeks here staged a great recovery.

The care home is clearly very well managed. The staff are very caring and both the staff and the residents are always cheerful. The home is kept in immaculate condition, as are the grounds. Activities and trips out are frequent and well organised. The catering is varied and of good quality. Overall,
Hurstwood is staffed by true professionals who take pride in their work and care deeply for the residents in their care.

You are always assured of a very warm and friendly welcome by all the staff at Hurstwood View. They are all very caring and highly professional. My mother has been fortunate to have respite care here. The atmosphere is extremely friendly and it is clear that it is run with smooth efficiency reflecting the excellent teamwork. My mother was not in good form when she came, and the staff were wonderfully kind and understanding, encouraging her recovery
and confidence. She has also enjoyed the excellent level of attention taken with the facilities and food offered. Her room is pretty and light with a lovely view. The sensitivity shown not only to my mother but also to the family during these weeks has been exemplary.

An extremely caring home.
Staff are very able and very caring.
From the manager through to all staff on all levels there is a superb caring attitude both to residents and to their families.
Everyone is always cheerful.
Each resident is known by name by every member of staff and treated with care
and respect.
The food is very good and individual tastes are catered for.
Overall an excellent home for residents and importantly peace of mind for family, knowing their loved one is so well cared for.

Light, airy and cheery is the immediate impression on entry to Hurstwood View. The design and layout seems more akin to a cruise ship with rooms broken up with lounges and café style living areas. It is all new for me and my family, but the level of service most worth caring is about is that the staff
and service "know my mum" and meet her needs.

I have looked at many care homes in the area and my father has been in a couple for respite. Hurstwood View is by far the best we have used and viewed. It is clean, friendly and the food is very good. Everyone knows all the residents by name, the staff are always happy and nothing seems too much
trouble. Nursing care is good and the care for the relatives seems to be just as important which can be so critical when moving a loved family member into a care home.

My mother was in Hurstwood View for nearly four years until her death in July. She was very happy there and was treated with love, care, respect and patience. Her health deteriorated in the last few months whereby she needed extra help. This was given without complaint at any time of the day or night.
The staff all treated the family with great compassion when she died.

It is hard to fault Hurstwood View who have offered a consistently high standard of care to my mother for the duration of her time there. They managed her final days with dignity and respect and looked after us all as a family during a difficult time. The nursing and health care assistants without exception
were wonderful and feel like members of our extended family while retaining their professional boundaries. The touches we most appreciated were little things like offering a glass of sherry before lunch, beautiful homemade cakes, wide ranging activities and a truly homely atmosphere.

Kirsty Johnson

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.


In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.


I joined Hurstwood View in 2012, and that is where my journey at Barchester began.
I love to spend time with my family & friends, and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a women’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Esther Onwuka

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2025

My name is Esther Onwuka, and I joined Hurstwood View in April 2025 as Deputy Manager.


From a young age, I have always had a strong passion for caring for others, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Nursing in India. Over the course of my 4-year training, I became deeply committed to the belief that providing care and support to people is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful roles in life.


Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2016, I have gained valuable experience working in Nigeria before relocating to England during the pandemic. I spent 5 rewarding years at a nursing home in Uckfield, where I progressed from Nurse to Deputy Manager. That experience helped shape my approach to leadership and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.


I am always striving to grow both personally and professionally. This drive has recently led me to complete a Master’s degree in Public Health, and I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. My ultimate goal is to make a positive, lasting impact within my workplace, my community, and the wider world.


At Hurstwood View, my role is to support our residents, their families, and our dedicated team to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standards of care. My aim is to help create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and at home.

Hi, my name is Cathryn, and I joined the team at Hurstwood View in August 2017 as the Administrator.


I have worked in care home administration since 2002 and have since gained an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration.


My role includes managing the financial systems in the home, HR, enquiry management and working closely with the General Manager. My favourite part of the role is interacting with residents and their families.

I’m Lisa, Activities Coordinator here at Hurstwood View. I’ve been working at Hurstwood View in varying departments since 2017, shortly after the birth of my second child.
With a strong background in Marketing, events, and community engagement - Activities is a great fit for me! I love arranging events and making a difference to our residents’ day. I’ve never danced so much since working here, no day is ever the same, and we really do have so much fun!

Hi. My name is Karen, and I am the Head Chef here at Hurstwood View.


 I have been working in the catering industry since I was 17 years old and have been working at Hurstwood View since it opened in 2012. I simply adore cooking and love to experiment with various flavours. I love my job at Hurstwood View and it’s a privilege to meet and work with so many different people. But what I love most is when people tell me they enjoy my food!


Being Scottish I am very fond of traditional Scottish dishes which when I am cooking, love to add a different twist. I am very fortunate to live in East Sussex with my husband and daughter. Sussex is a beautiful country with many interesting and historical places to visit. I love my job at Hurstwood View and in particular it's a privilege to meet and work with so many interesting residents. But what I love most is when people tell me they enjoy my food!

Hi, my name is Demi and I have worked at Hurstwood View since 2019.


I first joined Hurstwood View as a trainee care practitioner. I am now working as a Care practitioner and have recently started a degree with the university of Derby for Advanced Care Practitioner. My next step will be a Nursing Degree. As a care practitioner I work closely with the General Manager, Registered Nurses, and Senior Carers to ensure that all our resident’s needs are being met and to a high standard.


I am very passionate about my job at Hurstwood View and I always ensure my work is completed to a high standard. At Hurstwood View we all take great pride in ensuring that our residents are well looked after, we spend time getting to know our residents and their relatives on a personal basis to enable us to care for them all in a person-centred way and respecting their individuality. At Hurstwood View we have a great support network from our General Manager – Kirsty and Barchester in general, Barchester has great progression opportunities within all departments, and they always encourage staff to progress within their career. At Hurstwood View our staff are friendly and welcoming people who are more like family than staff.

A hairdresser and barber by trade, during lockdown I decided to make a career change.

I have tried my hand at many departments including Housekeeping, kitchen and Caring until I progressed to head of housekeeping in 2021. I take much pride in my job and I always ensure my work is completed to a high standard. I always ensure our residents have a clean, comfortable, and happy environment to live in. The most important part of my job role is ensuring I keep the home as homely as possible to help the residents to feel at home.

Hi, my name is Zoe and I have worked at Hurstwood View since 2013.


I started my career in the kitchen department then changed into a care assistant role. I have gradually worked my way up and I am now the head of unit for memory lane. I love working on memory lane and supporting our residents who are living with Dementia, in my role I take responsibility for ensuring that all our residents needs are met in the most suitable way for them. We take pride in person centred care and we value each residents differences. I always ensure that the staff working within the memory lane community are up to date with any recent changes and I also ensure that relatives are kept up to date with their loved ones ever changing needs.


At Hurstwood View we have a great team ethic, and the staff feel more like a big family rather than colleagues.

I really enjoy supporting our residents to live a happy and fulfilled life, you will often find me singing, joking and laughing a lot. Hurstwood View has such a friendly atmosphere and the staff are very good at making light in difficult situations. I can mostly be found with the Karaoke machine singing into the microphone in a room full of residents.
