My mother has been in the home for 15 months and always seems content, clean and tidy and well cared for. Staff seem very caring and genuinely interested in the residents. The home itself always has a bright, warm and very clean feel to it and a welcoming nature. Medical intervention when necessary has been sought swiftly and so all in all I am very happy with the home.

My 88 year old Mum lives in one of the "assisted living" flats attached to Hurstwood View and, after a few wobbles in 2015 when she moved in, is now "very content." Mum has mild to moderate dementia but the staff do an excellent job of enabling her to keep the right balance of independence. A change of Manager last year has put in place strong leadership and I'm confient in giving Hurstwood View an excellent rating.

After a very bad year, the new management are getting things under control. Staffing is still a problem with many agency staff still used.
The permanent staff often seem overwhelmed. There are more residents who are very sick now and the more able ones appear to be having less time.

Food is excellent. Activities need improvement many things don't happen. I would like to see more quizzes, games and important activities involving movement and more outings.

Thank you for your review, I have noted your points raised and the service is working towards increasing recruitment all the time. The sector is experiencing the same problem in recruiting staff and the retention of staff due to working in a high pressured discipline.

My husband had 2 and a half months of care and kindness at Hurstwood View. His room was sunny and cheerful, he had a very pleasant view over the fields. The food was appetising and hot. Altogether his trial months were in a very good atmosphere.

Absolutely wonderful home, I couldn't wish for a better home for my friend.
The staff are so warm and welcoming and the manager also makes the effort to come out to chat with the residents and visitors.
If ever I need to discuss my friend, the manager is happy to help me.

My friend always looks very happy when I visit and well cared for too. Great friendly team.

Hurstwood View is purpose built with excellent facilities but above all, it is a warm, caring and friendly home. There is a bright, comfortable cafe area where people meet and get to know one another over a hot drink and delicious homemade cakes and biscuits. There is always a lovely atmosphere here. The food is excellent with a very good menu choice- something to tempt everyone. The residents are treated with dignity and kindness by the staff who take the trouble to really get to know them. I, as a relative, have received great support from the staff and am always made to feel welcome.

My Mother has been at the home for nearly four years and at that time her care has been excellent. However, in the past month, the staff have gone beyond excellent in making sure that she is happy, safe, dignified, and loved. I cannot imagine her being anywhere else, and I am truly glad that I chose this home for her.

I would like to thank all of the staff for the excellent and friendly care they give everyone at the home, including the visiting family and friends.

This home is friendly, feels like a home rather than a care facility.

From the moment I entered the building, I felt warmly welcomed. In all my visits all the staff were kind, understanding and extremely helpful when necessary.
There was a real sense of teamwork which I had never met before in a care home.

Any telephone calls were dealt with very professionally but at the same time, I felt as if I was being helped in a very individual, friendly way. Nothing was too much trouble for any staff whatever colour uniform.

I visit Hurstwood view regularly with my daughter. The home is always clean and tidy and the staff very friendly. There are always toys available for my little girl to play with which is helpful. The staff on Memory Lane are always welcoming and it's comforting to know that our loved ones are cared for by caring, knowledgeable staff. I'd recommend this home, particularly for their specialist dementia unit. It's like home from home. Well done Hurstwood.

I visited recently and was very impressed by the warmth and care shown to the residents, particularly by the manager and the nurses. The home provides great entertainment - some of the singers are fabulous - and the people I know there have really enjoyed the animals when they've come to visit. I'm grateful to know my loved one is in a place where the food is enjoyable and the surroundings pleasing, but it is mainly the caring attitudes of the staff which makes Hurstwood such a positive place.

My mother was at Hurstwood View from the time it opened in September 2012. She was very well cared for in the Memory Lane Unit. This was now "her home" which she came to call it.
Staff really looked after her especially at the end of her life.

I get great comfort still going in to teach the residents keep fit.

My husband has been in the home since may having initially gone for respite care only. It took a while for him to settle (and for me to adjust) but he is now extremely settled and well cared for, better than I could at home. The staff, both carers, auxiliary, kitchen etc are all very cheerful and helpful. The carers take the time to get to know the residents and their likes/dislikes etc and the residents are never pressured to do anything they do not want to do. Visiting times are not limited and you are always made to feel welcome. The food is good and always varied. Tea and coffee are readily available, and cake/biscuits. My weekday visits are restricted to evenings so I do not see the activities but get reports from the carers when I visit in the evening or phone. I do feel there could be more activities on memory lane rather than downstairs. I think the laundry service could be improved. Sometimes the cleanliness could be improved, empty cups/plates etc removed from the lounge.

After several months spent in various hospitals, my Dad was so happy to have such a lovely place to call home. He appreciated the beautiful view from his window and established a good rapport with his carers. He told us that he hoped he could stay there until the end of his days. As his family we were made to feel very welcome at whatever time we called to see Dad and encouraged to help ourselves to tea and coffee and homemade biscuits and cake. The rooms are all individually decorated, warm, and well equipped with good quality furniture, and there are several attractive and comfortable lounge areas. Most important of all, the staff are so caring towards the residents and helpful and welcoming to the residents' families. The residents are treated with kindness, patience and dignity.

Overall, I would not hesitate in rating the home as excellent.

Kirsty Johnson
Kirsty JohnsonJob Title:General ManagerJoined: 2012

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.

In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.

I joined Hurstwood View in 2012, and that is where my journey at Barchester began.

I love to spend time with my family & friends, and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a women’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Esther Onwuka

My name is Esther Onwuka, and I joined Hurstwood View in April 2025 as Deputy Manager.

From a young age, I have always had a strong passion for caring for others, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Nursing in India. Over the course of my 4-year training, I became deeply committed to the belief that providing care and support to people is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful roles in life.

Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2016, I have gained valuable experience working in Nigeria before relocating to England during the pandemic. I spent 5 rewarding years at a nursing home in Uckfield, where I progressed from Nurse to Deputy Manager. That experience helped shape my approach to leadership and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.

I am always striving to grow both personally and professionally. This drive has recently led me to complete a Master’s degree in Public Health, and I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. My ultimate goal is to make a positive, lasting impact within my workplace, my community, and the wider world.

At Hurstwood View, my role is to support our residents, their families, and our dedicated team to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standards of care. I aim to help create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and at home.

If you visit us, you will likely see me walking around with a big smile, and I look forward to welcoming you in person.
