My husband has now been a resident of Symonds House for over two years.
During this time I have found the staff to be most efficient and caring, and always very friendly.
The rooms are always spotless and laundry is done daily.
The food is very well prepared and with a good variety., meeting my husband's
particular needs.
I have no hesitation at all in recommending Symonds House and their staff for giving a warm welcome and exemplary care.

The staff who care for Mum are helpful and kind. Mum does seem to be relaxed and calm. However, Mum does not always understand what is being asked of her, and rather than attempt to communicate in a slightly different way, the instruction tends to be repeated and repeated, which is not really going
to get the result. I wonder if some further training for staff on managing residents with dementia would be of use.
Unfortunately, I am not always kept up to date with situations by the office. I received notification that Spec Savers were visiting residents in early July, and I was keen for mum to be included. However, I am still waiting to receive an update on whether Mum needs a new glasses prescription or if there are any further concerns relating to her vision.

Symonds House is a historic building and sorely in need of refurbishment.
However all the members of staff, at all levels, are caring, respectful and dedicated. My husband, who has dementia, can be challenging to deal with at times, but the staff seem to be able to calm and reassure him.

When my father first went to symonds house there were a lot more staff to for fill his needs but I feel with the lack of staff. That are there now I worry his needs are not being meet anymore. Residents are left alone alot more than they should we're anything could happen. We are seriously considering
moving dad.

Reply from Angel Ibayan, Care Home Manager at Symonds House Nursing Home

I have been in the service in the last 2 years. Since then, the management has increased the staffing to meet our Resident's needs better. All staff are instructed not to leave any resident they are assisting to do another activity at all cost. Patient safety is paramount to us. Every day is different in a care home setting, there will be days that is is busier than normal. We always aim to answer all calls promptly but if staff are in a middle of assisting residents, a little wait cannot be avoided. The lounge is not to be left unattended so even if there is a staff in the lounge, they cannot do any other activity if there are Residents in the lounge.Symonds House Nursing Home is always supporting Resident's and their families, happiness and comfort. We are more than happy to assist when and if necessary.

My uncle was at Eastcotts for approx. 1 month after a stay in hospital.
It was reassuring to know that he was safe and being treated so well, as the previous few months had been very demanding. The staff were very kind and attentive, and treated him as an individual which was so important for his rehabilitation.
The facilities in the communal areas are very good and the facilities in the rooms are also good. The smart speaker in the room is a nice touch.
Overall a very positive experience at a difficult time. Thanks to the staff for their hard work and kindness.

My mum was admitted to Symonds House Linton for respite care from the hospital, I am so pleased she was, she had 1 to 1 care 24 hours a day which was extended to 2 weeks as she did not make the progress that had been hoped for.
The staff have been exceptional not only caring for Mum but also making
sure the extended family are okay. Always had time for a chat when it was needed. Sadly, Mum is now on end-of-life care. She is pain-free, clean, happy and comfortable. The building may not be the prettiest but the care by far makes up for that.
Thank you all at Symonds House, you are all doing an amazing job.

I have to be honest, Symonds House is not pretty on the inside. This is the only negative thing I can say about the home. My mother-in-law is receiving respite care and is being looked after with an abundance of care and compassion. Every single carer and nurse has been so kind to Mum but also extends
this to her large family. We are always greeted with a smile and an update on her condition and usually asked if we would like a cuppa! Please don't judge Symonds house on appearance alone, the care given is exemplary and we all know which is most important.

My mother had five falls in total in this home, none ever witnessed, always told she had been found on the floor, one fall resulting in a fractured pelvis. This fall was never reported to safeguarding but my mother was charged for extra care as they didn’t have enough staff to look after her one on
one. The staff shortages were never reported to the QCQ for that time. The next fall resulted in a broken hip again, nobody saw the fall but they picked her up and put her in bed. Ten hours later she was finally taken to the hospital where she ended up having palliative surgery and will never walk again. Several times we reported the cleanliness of my mother's room this unfortunately never changed.

Reply from Angelica Ibayan RGN RMA, Home Manager at Symonds House Nursing Home

We can only apologise for the upset the current situation has caused the family. Service users who walk with purpose are free to access all areas of the units they live in. We try our best to ensure that the environment they live in is safe. With anyone who independently mobilises comes risks, one of which is falls. On all forms on hand, the service user was trying to get up on her own hence the staff assisted her to do so. Our protocol is to immobilise a fallen resident regardless of if it is witnessed or unwitnessed fall. In this situation, the service user was adamant to get up and was struggling hence staff assisted her. After a couple of hours, she showed discomfort and pain, emergency services were called immediately but unfortunately, we do not have control over their arrival. The current management is unable to comment on events that had happened in the past. We choose not to comment on the cleanliness as we are going to be at risk of breaching confidentiality.

My Father has been at Eascotts now for 12 weeks and the staff have treated my Dad with great care and dignity. I have been kept informed at all times by the staff of any incidents. I have found the manager and all the staff very approachable and nothing has ever been too much trouble. I cannot fault

My Dad was discharged from hospital to Eastcotts to help him recover from a 2-week hospital stay back in mid-December.
The staff here have been absolutely amazing throughout his stay. They are not only very professional and great at what they do but there is a real personal level of care here. You
can see that the staff have taken time to get to know their residents on a personal level and adapt when supporting each and every one of them with dignity and gentle care. The manager has been amazing and hands-on in listening to our concerns about Dad coming home and is currently supporting us in arranging the care plan going forward.
In preparation for Dad’s discharge home, we had him at home for an overnight stay this week and upon our return, every single staff member we saw, personally welcomed Dad back and genuinely wanted to know how his homestay went. As a family we highly recommend Eastcotts.

I cannot recommend this home enough there are not enough words to express how amazing, caring and professional every member of staff is. My mum came to Eastcotts in March 23 for what we thought would be a temporary stay but is more permanent due to her unstable diabetes. These people are amazing, my
mum wouldn’t be alive and well if it wasn’t for them. The manager goes above and beyond to assist and help as do all the staff. My mum's life has improved so much thanks to the team here. In addition they are also so caring and welcoming to my dad who spends every day there seeing my mum and all the visitors she receives.

Mum was only a resident for ten days before she passed away, but I cannot fault the love and care she received but also me and my brother as we were there every day with her. To the point, as I had to travel each day from Bedfordshire, they always made me tea and coffee along with meals, which was so
unexpected. The warmth they showed towards my mum was overwhelming.
Yes, the actual bricks and mortar is tiered and could do with a facelift, and at times, I am sure a few extra staff would help, but everyone who we came across that worked there was kind and caring, and that's all we could ask for in Mum's final days. She was warm, safe and looked after.

Pretty much from when Dad was first admitted to Eastcotts we decided it was where we wanted him to be. This was confirmed after his 4 week assessment period as not only necessary but also our choice as a family.
It is of course convenient being very local to where we live but much more important is
the care Dad gets and how he feels on a daily basis about being there.
The care is excellent and Dad is safe and comfortable. He has a room that meets his needs with an en-suite bathroom and attentive care and medical staff that ensure he is well looked after, physically and mentally (as far as dad's conditions allow). Dad's welfare is always considered and we remain very happy with his being there.
Unfortunately, Dad has required hospital care this year but on each occasion, the Eastcotts' staff have dealt with the situation rapidly and effectively. Possibly even more importantly they have welcomed him "home" on each return getting him settled back in as soon as possible.
