Review of The Lodge Care Home (Killamarsh) from A W (Daughter of Resident) published on 3 September 2026 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

Manager weak, some staff care, some don't. Rooms old and dated, toilets disgusting. Not enough staff to safely look after residnets. Found my father on occasions with no bedding and covered in wee and poo. Kitchen open on floor and residents able to get hold of cutlery and half-eaten food. Residents just put into lounge, nothing done to entertain them, unless they are on the ground floor. Resident choked to death recently, which I witnessed, and quite frankly it shouldn't have happened. Some nurses have no idea what residents should be taking and often lapse giving medication.

I've recently moved my mum to whittington care home and I'm so pleased I have. She seems so much happier since her move. She has commented how much nicer the atmosphere and staff are to her previous home in Doncaster. I've found the staff to be excellent, extremely caring and interested in mums needs. The activities they are doing are lovely and mum had been more involved than her previous home. Their activity organiser is FABULOUS! I always feel welcomed when I visit and find mum well cared for. I love how the staff seem to have fun and jokes with the residents. The facilities have always been well maintained and clean each time I visit. I adore the garden and mum is so happy to have a lovely oasis to relax in with plenty of shaded areas to sit when I visit. I never wanted my mum in care but now she has to be, this is a place I feel happy and confident are taking care of her.

My brother moved into Whittington Care Home in April, and the care that he is being given is excellent. All the staff are very professional in what they do; they are friendly and very attentive to the person's needs. The home is clean, bright and well maintained. My brother always looks clean, and his clothes are freshly washed.

While my mother was in your care, she received excellent care and staff in the home were all excellent towards my mother and us, and my mother's needs. Also, when she passed away, we were looked after. After her passing, the night she passed away, the staff on shift showed us a lot of care. Cannot thank staff enough. Always kept family updated on how mum was.

Our relative spent his last four months here - it became his last family, for it is a real community here. We as visitors were always warmly welcomed. Our relative was cared for with dignity and humour. There is consistency in staff. Nursing staff were very proactive in updating us re our relative's health, either by seeking us out during visits, or promptly telephoning us to discuss. Nursing staff were conscientious and thorough in their approach to our relative's considerable nursing needs. The activities co-ordinator managed to engage our hard-to-reach relative - miraculous! Everyone, from the management and admin team, nursing team, carers, and maintenance and household team treated our family with kindness and respect. Thank you.

Review of Whittington Care Home from Helen H (Wife of Resident) published on 27 February 2026 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My husband was accepted to have respite for 3 weeks after the manager had visited us at home. After 3 weeks, we decided as a family that we were more than happy for him to stay at the home permanently. This was the hardest decision I have ever had to make. He settled in much better than expected. There were obviously difficulties to begin with, but it was clear that my husband was happy and has a good relationship with all the staff. Everyone is very helpful, kind and patient when dealing with any situation they have to face. The entertainment activities are also extremely good. We are always kept informed by the staff at each visit. Thank you.

Dad was taken in unexpectedly in November, and from the first meeting, everyone has been so kind, caring and reassuring. It's comforting knowing that dad is safe and well cared for. We visit regularly and are always greeted with smiles from the lovely staff who take time to chat to us and keep us informed. Its nice to see that dad has a good relationship with his carers who are very respectful to him, shaking hands and high fiving and always interacting with him, providing him with reassurance when needed.

I came into The Lodge today - and what a surprise, it looked beautiful with all the Christmas decorations and trees. The residents were doing crafts, making wreaths and chains to hang. Having their nails manicured + painted. + singing along to xmas songs (I even joined in) 10/10 to the staff and a special mention to Lindsay, shes entertained the residents and arranged activities for every day in December.

Overall Experience

The Lodge - my family and friends brought back from physically/mentally ill - to not far off fully better. Great to talk with Helen/manager. Plus she sorted me out everything - busses, trams, lifts, room bookings etc. Booking for shows - she and her staff easy to talk to laid back - no stress which has brought me on considerably. They taught me discipline/determination etc - each day, showering, teeth clean, excersise fresh air. A good routine. Staff not afraid to tell me to do these things which I don't mind at all. Helen especially treats me so well, like a brother/or a son, which has really helped with my convalescing and improvement - without a doubt. Plus not just me treats all her patient the same - superb genuine empathy. Yes! I'm going from strength to strength now and am ready to fend for myself again which at one time I never thought would happen. Thanks to Helen and her staff.

The staff are brilliant and go above and beyond to make my dad happy and comfortable.
Again with most care homes there isn't enough staff to give one to one time.
They do their best given the circumstances.
I always worry when I visit, but the home is always welcoming and helpful.

Thanks to everyone.

Review of Whittington Care Home from Patricia R (Friend of Resident) published on 29 September 2025 Submitted via Postal Card

I was impressed from the first time I walked through the door. The staff are friendly, kind and approachable. The residents are well cared for, respected and treated with dignity. She was always wearing clean clothes. I usually visit 3 - 4 hours at a time, and the residents are given drinks regularly by the staff. The lady I was visiting has at least 4 drinks, and more when she wants.

It is very difficult to wright a review due to the restrictive nature of your Review Policy, so anyone reading this please take into account, I am unable to accurately review this without any form of deformation, all I would say is please visit this place before allowing a family member to become a resident, most residents are walking and talking so care for them is better, but if you are bed bound and in a confused state then ask to see the room they are likely to placed in. note the inactivity of the staff, I only came across one proactive member. I am unable to say any more than care is no the word I would use.

We are disheartened to hear you have not had a good experience with us at Whittington. We strive to provide the highest standard of care to all of our residents in a caring, homely and safe environment, so you can leave content in the knowledge that your loved one is being looked after well. My dad was transferred here on 11/04/25. The care you have given has been excellent. He has built up his strength with the care staff, and they have taken care of him at meal times. He's been contended with his stay and all staff have been helpful when we have asked questions about his welfare.

My mum & dad moved in November 2024 & while is was a difficult adjustment at first I am now so happy that they are in Whittington Care Home.
My parents are well looked after, safe & warm. The staff are all fantastic, caring, supportive and friendly.

I have to give a shout out for 5 staff members in particular - these are the staff I seem to see the most & my parents love them. All of them though are really good.

Lovely hardworking nursing staff, health care workers and other staff members who looked after my mum in the last days of her life. The room she was in was clean and comfortable. Overall Experience
My brother moved here from Calderdale. He is a Chesterfield-born man and wanted to get back to
his home town. Whittington looked over his care plan documents, spoke with his social worker and said they could meet his needs.
It's been amazing for him.
In his previous home, he had refused to bathe for over 18 months. Lived off pancakes twice a day for 8 months. His Parkinson's disease was not well managed and his learning difficulties were ignored. He wasn't getting his hair washed regularly and wasn't getting his toenails cut often enough. Wasn't taken to the podiatrist for over 6 months.
Now he showers every week, and gets his hair cut in the home's salon. Gets his foot care done with the regular visiting podiatrist. Eats 4 meals a day and lots of variety. He's gone up 2 sizes in trousers since he moved in 14 weeks ago.

Even though I'm over 80 miles away, I ring him most days and staff always update me on any appointments, medication changes etc.
