My elderly friend has been a resident at Queen Elizabeth House for some years and decided to go into care as she has no family to look after her. From what I have seen when visiting her, the staff at Queen Elizabeth House are as good as family to her and she always seems content and well cared for.
Reply from Beverley Simms-Dick, Manager at Queen Elizabeth HouseThank you Morag for your kind review, which I will share with the team.

I am extremely pleased with the exceptionally high standard of care received by my friend since she has gone to live at Queen Elizabeth House. All the staff are very kind and caring. They have a good range of activities for the residents which include outings when the rules permit. Throughout the current
crisis, there has been a very high standard of care, the staff have made every effort to keep their residents safe. I am very grateful that we found such a lovely home.
Reply from Beverley Simms-Dick, Manager at Queen Elizabeth HouseThank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful review, Claire. The team and I will continue to work towards maintaining this high standard.

Due to the current pandemic, I have been unable to travel up from Devon to visit my father, so not seen him for over a year. I have been kept up to date with all the goings-on in the home with regular updates and guidelines. The senior team telephone me if there has been a health issue and when the
two jabs of the Covid 19 vaccines were administered. I have full confidence in how the home is run and the high level of care delivered to all residents. They have fully complied with the current guidelines, causing additional work on top of looking after all the residents, and answering the many questions from relatives and friends alike. I have built a rapport over the years with the team and banter goes back and forth. I highly recommend Queen Elizabeth House, it is small and friendly, so it alludes to a family atmosphere.
Reply from Beverley Simms-Dick, Manager at Queen Elizabeth HouseThank you Chris for the wonderful review, the team and I will continue to work hard to maintain this high standard.

My uncle moved to Queen Elizabeth House during the pandemic and the staff have done an excellent job of keeping him safe and well and keeping relatives updated and in contact with residents, in line with all guidance. My uncle has flourished there and they have dealt with any challenges in a caring
and compassionate manner. I can't thank them enough.

My father has mild dementia and has now been at this home for a year and I cannot speak highly enough about the individualised care that he receives. The staff turnover seems low so that both and my father and I have got to know the staff looking after him well.

Earlier on the year, he stopped

eating and drinking owing to an infection that he had and staff went to great lengths to consider how his needs could be met and he is now thriving. They understand and take pleasure in his love of music and do whatever they can to have live music for events.

They always ring me if he asks them to or if there is a problem and they are very good at balancing his need for freedom to do what he wishes and the need to safeguard him.

My mother was moved from a different care home in a dangerously poor state of health and well being. With hard work and care the staff at Queen Elizabeth House have turned her around. Her dedicated nurse has a great relationship with her, tirelessly trying to get the best out of her. I can’t thank her
and the rest of the staff enough. The home is clean and comfortable and all the staff have the residents best interests at heart.

From first visiting Queen Elizabeth House (QEH) for suitability, the building itself and the garden/car park were pleasing to look at and well kept, with easy access for both buses and trains. Once inside, the reception area was bright and welcoming. There were no unpleasant smells often found in care
homes. The atmosphere was good. The lounge extremely comfortable, colour coordinated, with large windows. The dining room, well spaced tables, nicely laid. Bedrooms of a good size. En suite toilet and wash hand basin. Library and hairdresser for residents.
The residents are treated with the utmost respect and kindness. The staff provide all sorts of different entertainment and outings. Garden parties and fairs in the summer months. The concern shown for residents is second to none particularly in regard to health problems. The home is clean and the food is good. I have a very happy friend, who says, "I like everybody here, moving was the best thing I did". Praise and many thanks to the caring staff.

The lunchtime menu should be reviewed on a fortnightly basis. The meals are too predictable and very little variety. Why not serve pizza or lasagne.

The showers have been out of use for two weeks. My aunt was offered a bath but is totally unable to climb in. No hoist??

Reply from B. Simms Dick, Home Manager at Queen Elizabeth HouseAll menus are reviewed quarterly by the residents in the home and based on their choices and/or medical needs meals are served. For each course, there are 3 choices available.
The wet room in question had a major leak which required the floor to be removed. Residents were offered the use 2 other bathrooms both with over the bath showers and a seated hoist.
The works to repair the wet room is complete.

Queen Elizabeth House has been my mother's home for over six years. She is nearly 93 and her care needs have changed significantly during this period. The standard of care has been excellent throughout. The carers are thoroughly trained, they encourage residents to be active, they maintain high standards
of hygiene and cleanliness, the food is very good and they have communicated very well with my sister and I on all issues relating to my mother.

The carers and the support staff work as a very impressive team and take pride in maintaining the dignity of those for whom they are caring.
I frequently refer to Queen Elizabeth House's high standards when discussing with others my mother's care and I do not hesitate to recommend Queen Elizabeth House to those who are looking for a care home for themselves or for a friend or family member.

Mum has been a resident for several years now and I have always been happy that she is being cared for in a friendly, clean and professional way.
The home is clean and always smells fresh and the food is excellent.
When visiting, there is always someone there to talk to if I need any information or
any update on Mum’s well being and the carers are all very kind.
I would thoroughly recommend Queen Elizabeth House to anyone looking for a small friendly care home for an elderly person.

I think the care at Queen Elizabeth House is excellent. I have already recommended them to several people. My relative has been a resident for about two and a half years. She is always well dressed and her hair always looked well presented. The staff have always been kind and helpful to both her and
us. We are always kept up tt date with any change in her treatment or physical wellbeing. She was recently confined to bed for three weeks or so. As a retired nurse, I was impressed with the standard of care she received at this time.

After viewing 18 different care homes my mother entered Queen Elizabeth House in November 2009. This was by far the best care home I had viewed, it was clean, smelt fresh, staff courteous and felt more "like a hotel" than a care home. Nothing has changed my mind about Queen Elizabeth House since the
day my Mother moved in there almost 8 years ago.

My mother has always been treated with care and respect, her room kept clean and tidy, her clothes washed and aired properly, staff interacting positively and respectfully with her. The menu and food provided have been first class, the entertainment controlled and varied and residents encouraged to go on external excursions (if able), birthdays celebrated admirably.

Whenever I visit I have been greeted well, always kept up to date on my mother's well-being (often receiving telephone call updates), plus have been involved in the Monthly Care Plan reviews for my mother.
Queen Elizabeth House is definitely a place I would recommend and if I need somewhere in later life would be happy to enter.

My father is extremely happy living at the home. The staff have got to know his specific needs and tailor their care towards them. This makes for a light-hearted and enjoyable experience for him. The activities are varied and challenging but also a lot of fun. The home is spotlessly clean, bright and
very welcoming for friends and relatives to visit. All in all, I am very pleased with the home and its staff and am delighted I chose it for my father.

My mother moved into the home over three years ago at the age of 90 following a fall when we realised she could no longer cope by herself.

Once in the home, her general health improved considerably and she has been able to play an active part in the home's activities. The management and staff provide

a caring and secure environment which certainly provides us with considerable peace of mind. I have no hesitation in recommending Queen Elizabeth House.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.705)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.705) out of 10 for Queen Elizabeth House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.930 for Queen Elizabeth House is calculated as follows: ( (119 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 128 Ratings = 4.93
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Queen Elizabeth House is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

QEH is an award winning home which prides itself on the ethos that it is run ‘for the residents and by the residents’. The staff and the management team take pride in the knowledge that all residents regardless of their cognitive needs have a voice, choice and total control. The residents are actively involved in the management of the home from managing the main office, marketing the home, running the weekly shop, running daily film shows, interviewing staff, participating in catering committees, theatre groups, designing the garden, bathroom and all refurbishments within the home. Residents are empowered to lead the life of their choice, with support to maintain any likes, dislikes, hobbies and social needs and/or desires they might have.
