St Theresa's Rest Home

6-8 Queen Annes Gardens, Bush Hill Park, Enfield EN1 2JN

St Theresa's is a warm and friendly residential care home set in a lovely tree-lined road in the conservation area of Bush Hill Park, Enfield, London.

The home provides care for older people, including those living with dementia. The building is a Victorian property sympathetically converted as a 'home away from home'. The care home first opened its doors in 1953 and is situated close to the local shops and transport.

St Theresa's supports 23 residents and provides them with a high standard of care. All staff are well trained, carefully vetted and recruited for their caring skills. St Theresa’s does not use agency staff. Being a smaller care home enables St Theresa’s to provide care that fits the needs of each individual resident.

At St Theresa's, the smaller number of residents cared for allows staff to understand the changing care needs of each resident on a day-to-day basis. The residents also get to know staff members well, which builds familiarity and trust. Many of the current staff have been with St Theresa's for years.

Great emphasis is placed on creating a pleasant, homely atmosphere for residents. Special attention is given to the happiness and individual requirements of all residents. There is direct involvement of the owners in the management of the home.

The home has a visiting hairdresser, optician, dentist, chiropodist, GP's , district nurses and other health professionals.

In July 2016, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) awarded St Theresa's a rating of 'Good' in all areas.

St Theresa’s is registered with London Borough of Enfield and is highly regarded by both the local community and the authorities.

Overview

The Review Score of 9.8 (maximum of 10) for St Theresa's Rest Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 19 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Theresa's Rest Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.777 for St Theresa's Rest Home is calculated as follows: ( (180 Excellents x 5) + (39 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 224 Ratings = 4.777

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Theresa's Rest Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 4.6 positive Reviews (23 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 9 Reviews ÷ 4.6 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.8 St Theresa's Rest Home has a Review Score of 9.8 (9.777) from 19 Reviews

My mum was here at St Theresa's Rest Home for 8 months and I am so glad that I chose this home for her. I could not fault any of the care that my mum received. She was happy and content the whole time she was here. Her last days she was treated with dignity and compassion and I was happy here rather than in a hospital.
The manager and all the staff are second to none in the care industry and if any of my friends or family need a care home I would not hesitate to recommend St Theresa's Rest Home.

My late aunt spent her last 2 years in the excellent care of the staff at St Theresa's.
Despite her ever-worsening condition she was always treated with dignity and given all attention necessary.
After reviewing several homes I chose the St Theresa's not just because of its rating but also because I wanted her to stay in a smaller, friendly home where she would receive personal attention and remain part of a 'family'.
Of course, the facilities, cleanliness and food are excellent but it's the individual, personal care that is provided to residents that makes the home stand out.
I have no issues at all with any aspect of my aunt's care and greatly appreciate the staff's efforts in making her last years as comfortable as possible. I, therefore, have no reservations about recommending the home to others.

I phoned various Care Homes in Enfield and found St Teresa's Rest Home to be the most helpful and the communication was clear and concise.
The family then visited St Teresa's and found it to clean, tidy, well organised and the staff helpful and chatty. The manager was very knowledgeable when discussing my grandmother's medical needs.
My grandmother was not settling very well and was quite cantankerous. They got her eating and drinking (while she clutched her handbag) and she got her newspaper every day.
Throughout her stay, her carers were understanding and patient and she soon came round to her new surroundings.
Unfortunately, her health was deteriorating rapidly due to Anaemia and Kidney Failure and the manager was able to sort out visits from nurses to tend to her and Marie Curie ladies came to sit with her day and night, so when my grandmother did pass away in the early hours she was comfortable and with a friendly face. All we could have asked for. We couldn't have wished for a better care home.

My partner was in St Theresa's for just short of 2 years. She passed away on the 9th August 2017 with what seemed to be a heart attack and I was made aware as soon as it happened.
They had made her life a lot better from the time she was admitted, peaceful and quiet, which I was very thankful.

Last Christmas my family needed to find a home urgently for my father after a sudden deterioration in his dementia. We were impressed with our initial visit to St.Theresa's and the manager could not have been more friendly and reassuring but at the same time absolutely professional when she came to assess. We were greatly helped with the move-in process and from day one, were impressed with the standard of care. Kindly and experienced staff were always on hand whenever anything was needed. No-one sitting distressed in corners waiting for someone to help and an atmosphere of calm always prevailed even when someone became agitated. Our father, though distressed and indeed difficult at times, clearly benefitted from being amongst others in a similar situation to his own and we were assured that he was never too much trouble. We are enormously grateful to the manager and all the staff at St.Theresa's and would happily recommend them to anyone finding themselves in a similar situation.

My mother was very difficult when starting at the care home. They worked very hard with her and she became very settled and enjoyed her time at St. Theresa's.
They looked after her so well. The staff were all so well trained by the manager. It was such a happy place to be. They looked after her until the end of her life which was made so easy by their kindness and understanding and I cannot thank them enough for everything they did for her.
Thank you.

Mum was in St Theresa's for nearly 2 years. She passed away in March 2017, in the care home.
We, as a family, couldn't have asked for any better care for mum.

When my mother left hospital after surgery in October 2014 she was no longer able to live in her own home. She arrived at St Theresa's confused, panicky and extremely unhappy. The staff assured the family that she would gradually settle and that we shouldn't worry. The time it took Mum to settle was probably a fair bit longer than the staff anticipated but they never tired of trying out different ways to keep her calm and cheerful. What Mum really responded to in those early days was the affectionate, tactile approach of the Carers and their big smiles! They have a lot of expertise in caring for Dementia sufferers and after a time it was clear that Mum felt just as secure in the company of St Theresa's staff as she did when family visited. We visited several times a week throughout the two and a half years that Mum was resident in the Home and never regretted our choice of St Theresa's Care Home. Mum died peacefully in the Home - the quality of her care sustained to the very end.

I am a friend of one of the elderly male residents who has been in the home for six years.
The care of the residents could not be improved as it is excellent.
The meals are all home cooked and varied.
It is very clean, no smells, and very homely.
I cannot visit the home as much as I would like, but I am kept updated regularly.
It is well managed and I would have no hesitation in going there myself or recommending anyone else.

Dad came into St Theresa's Rest Home in July. He had Alzheimer's and Vascular dementia. Dad was difficult and strong willed and was very hard work, but he finally settled in after a couple of months. The carers were very kind and had a good sense of humour. His room was newly decorated and St Theresa's Rest Home is undergoing a refurbishment. The residents seem contented and comfortable. The food is very good and cooked on the premises. If you have any problems there is always someone on hand to ask for help. Very homely.

The best way I can describe St Theresa's is to say I would be happy to live there myself if it became necessary. The manager and her staff work well as a team treating the residents with good humour and respect. They always keep me informed of my cousins health and well-being, giving me peace of mind as to her quality of life now that I live over a hundred miles away and cannot visit so often.
St Theresa's is clean and comfortable the residents always look "well turned out". My cousin praises the meals and I know a lot of care goes into making them nourishing and tasty.
I have asked my cousin if she would like me to look for a home nearer me and she says "no - she's happy where she is". This speaks for itself.

I found the overall care for my uncle was very good - the care and support for him was excellent during difficult times for him - the staff were always there available to help him and also helped when requiring hospital/doctor visits. The management team kept me up to date with any health issues/doctors visits and listened to any concerns I expressed. Rooms were kept very clean and were of good size. The food was all cooked on the premises to a very high healthy standard which my uncle always enjoyed. The premises is very safe with locks on all external doors. The care home is excellent value for money and I would recommend this home to anyone. The owners and staff really do care for there residents and treat people with the dignity they deserve.

My mum lived at St Theresa's home for three years, she was always clean and dressed well. She enjoyed her meals. Various members of our family visited mum regularly but did not see any regular activities taking place. The staff and the manager were always available to speak with during our visit but at times when they were taking a resident to the toilet the staff level in the main room was very scarce. Staff need to be vigilant regarding residents sitting in the conservatory with hot sun beating down on them as they cannot move. Overall the staff are very caring.

Mrs Paul, Registered Manager at St Theresa's Rest Home responded to this review on 10 Apr 2016:

Thank you for your comments.
We are sorry that we had to give you notice to take your mum from our Care Home. We did so in your mum’s best interests because she needed a Nursing Home. Although we gave one month’s notice we continued to care for her for 4 months until a vacancy arose in the Nursing home of your choice.
Most of your family’s visits were around meal times; at which times Residents’ activities are not carried out. All of our residents who currently sit in the conservatory are mobile and able.
When a resident’s abilities deteriorate, as was the case for your mum, 2 staff are required to toilet, until a suitable Nursing Home can be found for them; the staff levels in the main lounge can momentarily be lower during that short time.
Our staff are very caring. We do not employ agency staff but go to great lengths to recruit dedicated carers.

My sister started her time at St Theresa's in January 2015, recommended by someone from another home. As I live in Canada and my sister has no relatives in England to look after her needs, it has all been left up to me. I visited St Theresa's in May 2015 and was very impressed. I specifically looked around at the cleanliness of the rooms, common areas and the residents themselves. Everything seemed to be spotless. The staff are wonderful and seem to be very caring. Since I do not live close, the Manager keeps me updated by phone and email. I would recommend this Home to others as my sister is getting the best of care.

My father has been a resident at St Theresa's for a year now, and myself and the family are very pleased with the standard of care he receives and the communication we have with the home regarding his situation.
All of my father's appointments are managed by the home and we can all rest assured that his health and wellbeing is being managed efficiently and to his best interests.
