My mother has been at Sunrise for eighteen months and their care of her has been very good. The staff are friendly and attentive and the quality of the food has recently improved with a new chef - her only real issue.

Sunrise of Sonning appreciate moving into a care home can be an unsettling time. This is why we take the time to engage with family members and friends of the resident to make the process as smooth as possible, to get to know the resident on a personal level. We are pleased to hear your friend has settled in well.

My mother spent the last year of her life in Sunrise. She had been slowly deteriorating at home, dementia, eyes and hearing all proving too difficult to manage by herself. The home is more like a hotel than a home, a cafe and beautiful garden both made visiting a pleasure rather than depressing as can be the case. Settling into a new environment was always going to be daunting but all the staff at Sunrise were hugely welcoming and encouraging. However it is the last few months where the staff really came into their own - their communication with the family, the GP, hospital and community care team was incredible. At every stage of her decline, a system was immediately in place to cope and her immediate care team were patient, caring, loving and professional. They literally could not do enough to make her comfortable, happy and cared for.

Our family are extremely grateful, thank you.

Sunrise is a wonderful care home - the manager and staff are friendly, caring and treat everyone with the utmost respect and dignity. There are lots of well-organised activities and excellent entertainment every day, and I have noticed a significant improvement in my mother's well-being and emotional state. Her individual care is provided by a small team of three carers with whom she has developed a close relationship with. The only negative aspect is that being a large care home and part of an international group there is always the underlying commercial aspect.

Sunrise of Sonning has been an excellent care home. Our mum was very angry, confused and scared when she first arrived due to Alzheimer's.

Through excellent care and support, mum has been able to slowly and carefully become used to her new way of life. She now is very content and enthusiastically joins in with all the great activities and trips provided. Staff have shown a very high level of kindness to her but also to our family. Any concerns or requests we have are always instantly dealt with and we are regularly contacted if there is anything mum needs or that they are concerned about.

My mother was in Sunrise of Sonning for five weeks before she passed away. In that time, the staff looked after her with care, dedication and respect.
Because of her needs and settling in, I was in regular contact with the home and I felt that we worked together to make what was to be her last few weeks as comfortable as possible. There was excellent communication and they made every effort to try and encourage her to eat and join in with other residents.

The room she had was light and bright and looked onto the garden, it was very peaceful. It was more expensive than some homes we looked at but the home and staff were so friendly from the first visit that I wanted to make sure that Mum had the quality of care she deserved.

We'd had very favourable reports about Sunrise Sonning, so together with the 'Outstanding' CQC plus fees at the upper end of the scale, the expectation was for excellence in care. The well-appointed property stands in nice grounds. The room was good, though all visitors agreed that the floor plan needed reconfiguring; giving more general living space, by downsizing and repositioning the fitted kitchen area. The induction process was very thorough, but quite long, daunting and exhausting - especially for someone frail and taking place, as it did, immediately on arrival. Communication - referred to as 'Cascading Down Information' was our big issue - though several staff members cannot be faulted in their efforts. It affected all areas, catering, housekeeping, carers, nursing (excluding the final 48 hours, when general and nursing care was exemplary). As a result, consistency and follow-through in care and therefore the quality of life became very frustrating. Though I visited for 2 days each week, I live 90 miles away and my relative found it very stressful to have to continually repeat herself regarding the daily support she required - there was an evident lack of 'Cascading Down Information' in practice.

Overall I think Sunrise is doing a difficult job very well and providing a 'home from home'.
I realise everyone is very busy but would have liked to see my father being made to walk more, round the garden etc.

I made a couple of requests, they didn't happen, but I appreciate there is always a lot going on.

When I came to Sunrise in late December 2018 for respite care, I was very well looked after by the staff, particularly the nursing staff.
I met with nothing but kindness and encouragement from the staff and residents and through all this I have regained most of my health.

In many ways, Sunrise is more like a hotel than a residential home and its attractive gardens add greatly to its appeal.

My mother moved into Sunrise Sonning in December 2018 when she could no longer live independently. She was very poorly while she was there and sadly passed away in February 2019. Her care was second to none. Without exception, every member of staff was warm and caring, not just towards my mother but family members too. The nursing care she received was exceptional.

I would recommend Sunrise Sonning to anyone looking for care for themselves or for a relative.

My father moved into Sunrise of Sonning in December 2018 in extremely stressful circumstances. The staff at the home were absolutely brilliant. The facilities are top rate and the whole place is extremely well run. Sadly my father passed away, but again the staff were excellent and caring throughout. I would, without hesitation, recommend this home to anyone looking for a caring, friendly, welcoming place for themselves or their relatives.

My mother was diagnosed with early onset dementia and spent 6 years living in Sunrise of Sonning being cared for by the Reminiscence team. She was one of the longest staying residents. Throughout the whole time, the team have gone above and beyond what I would expect, showing real intelligence, professionalism and passion for the people in their care. For the relatives, they prepared us for each new stage before it happened, carefully discussed the options and had the confidence to nudge us in the right direction if we were unsure. For my mother, she was cared for with love and kindness. Even in the final stages they thought of everything and made sure she was treated perfectly, even if that meant taking some tough decisions on their part or putting her needs in front of their own. Both of her lead carers are now part of our family and join in family events. I could not recommend them more highly nor praise them more.

My 64-year-old sister stayed at Sunrise of Sonning for the last 12 weeks of her life. She was always treated with dignity and respect. Nothing was lacking in her end of life care. All staff were very friendly at all times. Her cat who stayed with her was also very well cared for. The food and activities were excellent. Nothing was too much for any member of staff. We were always made to feel very welcome, part of a big family and encouraged to join in activities.

Everyone has made my mum feel at home and treated her very well. Staff have been compassionate and caring. On one occasion, mum didn't receive help to get undressed and her buzzer didn't seem to work. This was resolved by mum leaving her room to find someone. I understand this was an oversight and hasn't happened again. Any problem has been dealt with immediately and with support and understanding.

My dad was a resident at ‘Reminiscence’, Sunrise of Sonning for almost three years suffering from vascular dementia. The care, love, support and respect that my dad was given by the 'Reminiscence' team at Sunrise was exemplary throughout. My father's dementia journey was not easy for him or our family, but the staff were flexible, proactive and understanding the whole time. Communication from the staff to the family was also excellent.

Dad and our family are eternally grateful for the care and compassion shown. Thank you to all at Sunrise of Sonning.

Susan JohnstoneJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2018

I have worked in Sonning Gardens since 2018, first as Deputy Manager and now as Home Manager. Previously I worked in the NHS as a District Nurse, Community Nurse Practice Educator, Independent Nurse Prescriber and Community Nurse Manager. I have a number of nursing qualifications and an MA in Health and Nursing Care.

My passion has always been caring for people in their own homes and supporting my team to be the best they are in their chosen careers. Working at Sonning Gardens is the perfect environment for me as our residents and staff are all in one beautiful home, set on lovely grounds. I especially love Christmas at Sonning as our home is magical with all the pretty decorations and lights.

When not at work I enjoy tending my flowers and vegetables, visiting National Trust properties and taking trips to the coast when possible. When I get a quiet evening in I enjoy a good murder mystery with a glass of wine.

Mwila Muma
Mwila MumaJob Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2022

I am delighted to be part of the team at Sonning Gardens. Working as a Deputy Manager, I have the privilege to support the team and the Home Manager with my clinical knowledge and experience.

I started my career 16 years ago as a qualified nurse. My career started in acute hospital settings where I worked for 8 years before I moved to the UK and worked in the care home sector. I have worked in various capacities including RGN, Unit Manager, Senior Nurse and now Deputy Manager. I joined the team at Sonning Gardens just over a year ago as an RGN and moved up to Deputy manager after 6 months.

Caring for the elderly and the vulnerable is a part of my culture and becoming a nurse just made that a lot more profound. I believe people deserve to live their lives to the fullest despite their circumstances and this is what I see happening every day at Sonning Gardens. I am proud to be part of it all.

In my free time, I like to take long walks, travel and be with my family.

Sarah TownsendJob Title:Client Liaison ManagerJoined: 2022

I joined Sonning in August 2022 having managed a private health club for 8 years.

I have always enjoyed working with senior populations and was closely involved in organising memberships, and activities and applying for funding for exercise programmes for the over 65's in my last job, so the move into care seemed entirely natural.

The team at Sonning are supportive of each other and takes pride in ensuring that our residents can have enjoyable and fulfilled lives in our home.

I find it immensely rewarding to work with families to work out the best care solutions for their loved ones.

In my spare time, I enjoy walking my cocker spaniel, Dudley, gardening and travelling in our campervan.

As the manager of Woodlands, I support my team to provide excellent, person-centred care to all our residents, providing meaningful engagement during the day.

Another passion of mine is animals and I have two mini dachshunds who enjoy coming to work with me. The residents enjoy stroking them and watching Poppy and Peach playing balloon tennis!

My background is in nursing, and I have worked for the last 16 years in social care. I relish providing care for people in a dignified and respectful way when they need it most. I am privileged to work with and be part of such an amazing team, who brings so much joy and happiness to the residents we care for. My passion and goal in life are to care for others and support them to live well with their Dementia.
