On more than one occasion I had first-hand experience of unacceptably long response times for call buttons, and over the 3½ weeks Mum was there I learnt from several residents that overly-long response times were a regular problem. They certainly were for Mum.
The garden here is amazing. The rooms are 5 star. The food is top quality, and some of the carers are lovely. But I do not believe there is a culture of care at Sonning Gardens: from both the General Manager and Deputy refusing to meet with me; to the Client Liaison Manager telling me (at best) half-truths; to what appears to be not enough carers to cover the needs of immobile residents. I would summarise the culture here as "it's our way or the highway", and suspect it starts at the very top.

Mum hated it here, but is fairly happy in her new care home. I'm writing as a warning to anyone who puts an immobile loved-one here. All that glitters is not gold.

I gave a review but I wanted to put it on social media on a daily basis but I decided not to. The care is so good but was not allowed to post it to social media, I don't know why. I read of when who in their 60s want to put their feet up or travel, but instead ended up looking after their mother's who were 90 and grandchildren. I would be glad to read my notes, we thought care home were expensive but at home I looked after my hubby, professional carers were 120 a night and 120 a day 240x30=7200 a month. On top of that we lived in a retirement flat, so we paid 2000 for maintenance charge, land rate, rates police service set on 4 premises her wages and on top of that we had cleaner bills. I told my husband I will look after you darling, soon turned into what do you want now? Why didn't you ask when I was standing up, let me have a few minutes to myself. He wanted to use the loo at night. I had to help him. My answer was why didn't you go before bed? Can't you hold it till morning? I prayed every night that god should let me die. All those thoughts are now gone. I had difficulties that seems to have gone now, along with acidity. At home we all made meals like water and 2 veg done. The food here is too healthy and such wide choice. They are so good with drinks choice and puddings. At home relatives had to take us to doctors, dentist, hosp etc. My relative drove 60 miles, we paid for her time and petrol. All those costs have now gone, people who think care homes are expensivemust sit at home all day and watching TV. My husband wanted to watch, I started upsetting him. The activities here also the food, even the lady preist who's cause is excellent her service is the only one I didn't fall asleep in. Maintenance man is excellent and cooperative. He has quick solutions.

All members of staff provide an atmosphere of warmth and love.
My Mum received wonderful care throughout her time at Sonning Gardens but especially in her final days. She was treated with dignity, care and tenderness which helped our family deal with such a difficult situation.
I would strongly recommend Sonning Gardens to anyone who is looking for a Care Home for themselves or a loved one.

Our experience with Sonning Gardens has been great from first meeting Tracey to view the home through to the present time. Tracey was very helpful and kind at a very difficult time for us as a family. The transition into Sonning Gardens was smooth for my Mum. The staff are always so pleasant and helpful, they are very respectful towards Mum and she is never made to feel they are too busy for her. The Bistro area for sitting and socialising is a welcoming area for the residents and family alike to have a tea/coffee cake. The gardens are lovely to wander around or sit and chat. The activities team are always on the go chatting and encouraging the residents to enjoy themselves. There is always something happening from singers, crafts and visits from schools or talks. The dinning area is nicely set out and when family visit from Kent they enjoy sharing a nice meal there with Mum.

I would recommend Sonning Gardens to anyone looking for a lovely setting for their family member.

My 98 year old uncle went to Sonning Gardens having lived independently his whole life. It was a difficult transition for him, and the staff have made it so much easier with their care and respectful approach. We love walking around the beautiful gardens and enjoying coffee and pastries in the bistro. I am kept informed of health concerns and any issues he has are resolved quickly. Such a relief to know my uncle is well cared for.

From the first meeting - walk about it was obvious to me this care home was perfect for my aunt. The " feel" is one of listening, caring and making sure each resident is number one!
Individually is taken into account along with dignity and respect.
Smiling happy staff ( tick)
Happy residents alert and engaging (tick) comfortable and clean amazing choice of food - help with eating etc (all ticks)
Nothing we asked was too much trouble and my aunt says she has never felt so warm, safe and cared for.
It was the very best decision we made for our aunt. We visited many many homes in area and this one stood out by a mile.

Every time we visit it is reinforced by the smiles there it is the best!

We have been very pleased with our interaction with Sonning Gardens.
Our initial knowledge of Sonning Gardens came from a friend who had a relative already in SG and who provided good reports to us.
We therefore enquired, asking SG if they would accommodate my aunt for a period of respite care.
Towards the end of the initial period it was clear that my aunt was settling in very well. She liked the staff, liked the meal options and was feeling comfortable in the surroundings. We discussed with her therefore the option of extending her stay on a permanent basis as she was gradually coming to realise that she was getting care and help she needed whilst retaining a fair degree if independence.

SG were in a position to agree to a transfer to permanent residence and we have had no reason to regret that decision.

From the moment we walked through the door and were met by Tracey, we knew this was where we wanted our beloved Dad to be. Tracey showed us so much compassion and answered all of our questions. It was the first Care Home we had visited, and she encouraged us to look at others to help us make the right decision for Dad.

We did this, and it confirmed even more that Sonning Gardens was the absolute right place for Dad.

The Nurses and Carers treat Dad with dignity, kindness and respect. It is wonderful to see his eyes light up and his smile when he sees them.

The home is so beautiful and clean and the activities that they offer are outstanding. There is something for everyone. I have experienced them myself on my visits and I am always welcomed so kindly.

My Dad is so happy here and in turn that makes his family all content. We know he is in the best place.

Thank you Sonning Gardens.

My mum has been a resident at Sonning gardens since October 2025. Mum had been very reluctant to think about moving to a care home but after 2 weeks respite she was ready to move in permanently. As mum says frequently the staff cannot do enough for me. They are all so friendly, look after me so well. We have good fun & the entertainment is fabulous. Mum is very happy & in turn so are we. My mother in law is a completely new woman since moving to Sonning Gardens. Her mobility is vastly improved, her overall health is well maintained and her standards of personal hygiene and wellbeing are so much better due to the high standard of care, food and activities on offer. Without exception every member of staff from reception to management and medical/care have been very kind and friendly, we are always welcomed by name and with a smile. The communication from them is proactive and very detailed and has helped us ensure MIL has everything she needs. From spending every day in her room, she is now in the company of others and frequently uses the cafe, lounge and activities areas on a daily basis, joining in everything. During the Christmas period the staff went out of their way to make it fun and colourful. We could not be happier with her care and thoroughly recommend this home to anyone who wants the best for their loved one. Nothing is too much trouble for them!

From the moment contact was made with Sonning Gardens the family felt they were in good ,caring hands and this never changed during the few weeks my husband stayed prior to taking his last breath due to terminal cancer.
His room was lovely with views over the beautiful gardens. All the staff were kind and thoughtful and gave him excellent care according to his changing needs as his condition deteriorated. Where possible he was encouraged to join in with the variety of activities provided or visited in his room by well being staff . He had little appetite but the food from the kitchens was of a very high standard and would cook special light meals if he asked.
As family members we were also cared for and given support at a very difficult time for us all and we are all eternally grateful that my husband was able to spend the last days of his life in Sonning Gardens where he was always able to retain his dignity due to the high quality of care given.

To all the staff,a huge thank you!

I can't rate Sonning Gardens Care Home highly enough. From our initial show-around with Tracey, who was extremely warm and welcoming, to moving Dad into the care home, every member of staff I came into contact with was so polite and friendly. The home itself is just lovely - from the warm, inviting entrance to my dad's room, which was modern, extremely well equipped, and thoughtfully decorated, with a beautiful view across the gardens. Sonning Gardens completely dispelled any preconceptions I had about care homes being tired, dated, or dull. All the staff are kind, caring, and patient. The range of activities on offer is truly remarkable - every time I visited, there was always something going on, whether it was a themed dinner, a live pianist, or a film screening. It was difficult for my dad to have to go into a care home, but it was such a comfort knowing he was in such a lovely environment, cared for by such a wonderful team. Thank you, Sonning Gardens.

I highly recommend Sonning Gardens Care Home. My aunt stayed there for respite care and absolutely loved her time. From our very first visit, the client liaison manager was incredibly helpful and accommodating, even at short notice. She was an absolute pleasure to deal with.
The care my aunt received was exceptional. Every carer we encountered was genuinely kind, attentive, and compassionate. A special thanks to one of the staff members, who was a true gem, she kept me updated on everything and went above and beyond to meet my aunt's dietary needs.

Having visited many care homes, I can confidently say that Sonning Gardens stands out. The entire team clearly cares deeply for the residents. We first visited Sonning Gardens Care Home when my mother had been admitted to hospital after a fall at home. Her dementia was progressing and, as a family, we knew she could no longer live safely at home. We initially arranged a respite stay, but after a week knew this was a perfect setting for her. She celebrated her 90th birthday whilst in Sonning Gardens and enjoyed seven months of being fully cared for. We found the staff to be welcoming, attentive and my mother always spoke of their kindness. She has a beautiful room, but spent most time in the comfortable lounge area. My mother had been a keen cook and, on our visits, we enjoyed discussing the delicious menu of the day. We are grateful to all the staff for their care and sensitivity. Sonning Gardens gave my mother, at the end of her life, the care she deserved and gave us, as a family, peace of mind.

My Mum thoroughly enjoyed her stay at Sonning Gardens-so l just had to write this review. This was her first time being away from home and you have given her the confidence in knowing that home from home environments such as yours are nothing to fear. She really enjoyed participating in the wonderful activity program- not Something she would normally participate in -such a shame you do not offer this on a book-in drop-in basis for respite returners. She thoroughly enjoyed the varied and comprehensive menu, nothing was too much trouble she was even provided with a pack lunch on chemo appointments at the hospital. we have nothing but good things to say about everyone + everything + would not hesitate to recommend.

I have worked in Sonning Gardens since 2018, first as Deputy Manager and now as Home Manager. Previously I worked in the NHS as a District Nurse, Community Nurse Practice Educator, Independent Nurse Prescriber and Community Nurse Manager. I have a number of nursing qualifications and an MA in Health and Nursing Care.

My passion has always been caring for people in their own homes and supporting my team to be the best they are in their chosen careers. Working at Sonning Gardens is the perfect environment for me as our residents and staff are all in one beautiful home, set on lovely grounds. I especially love Christmas at Sonning as our home is magical with all the pretty decorations and lights.

When not at work I enjoy tending my flowers and vegetables, visiting National Trust properties and taking trips to the coast when possible. When I get a quiet evening in I enjoy a good murder mystery with a glass of wine.

I joined the team at Sonning Gardens just over a year ago as an RGN and moved up to Deputy manager after 6 months.

Caring for the elderly and the vulnerable is a part of my culture and becoming a nurse just made that a lot more profound. I believe people deserve to live their lives to the fullest despite their circumstances and this is what I see happening every day at Sonning Gardens. I am proud to be part of it all.

In my free time, I like to take long walks, travel and be with my family.

Sarah TownsendJob Title:Client Liaison ManagerJoined: 2022

I joined Sonning in August 2022 having managed a private health club for 8 years.

I have always enjoyed working with senior populations and was closely involved in organising memberships, and activities and applying for funding for exercise programmes for the over 65's in my last job, so the move into care seemed entirely natural.

The team at Sonning are supportive of each other and takes pride in ensuring that our residents can have enjoyable and fulfilled lives in our home.

I find it immensely rewarding to work with families to work out the best care solutions for their loved ones.

In my spare time, I enjoy walking my cocker spaniel, Dudley, gardening and travelling in our campervan.
