  • Horkesley Manor, Colchester
Horkesley Manor is a residential, nursing and dementia care home in a substantially renovated manor house in the Essex countryside, at the end of a long drive in Great Horkesley just outside Colchester. The home looks out over open fields and the grounds give it a peace and space felt immediately on arrival.

Colchester is within easy reach, offering residents and families access to a wide range of shops, services and healthcare. The home has ample on-site parking.

Short stay and long term care is available for residents with a wide range of needs, including those living with dementia.

The Aspen Memory Centre provides specialist dementia care within the home, a purposefully designed environment for people living with memory loss, supported by an experienced team. The full care pathway means support can change as needs evolve without requiring a move.

Spacious suites and well maintained grounds give residents comfortable individual space alongside genuine outdoor access. The home’s gardens are one of its most noted features, a setting for gardening, sitting outside and seasonal activities.

Meals are home cooked and freshly prepared each day, with dietary needs always accommodated. A chiropodist visits weekly, and optician and physiotherapy appointments can be arranged for residents.

The activities programme includes card games, Scrabble, arts and crafts, gardening, music events and day trips. A hairdresser visits once or twice a week. The in-home bistro provides a social space for residents and families.

The home is proud to say that in the 2026 family survey, every family said they would recommend Horkesley Manor.

Great Horkesley Manor has been mums home for over two years things have improved immensely in the last few months not everything is perfect but the carers are wonderful. All the staff are considerate to us relatives as well.
It would be nice if there were more carers but I believe the staff levels
are at legal levels and they are all lovely.

My mother has been a resident at Great Horkesley Manor for a few months now. I am very pleased with the care she is receiving and enjoy the atmosphere when I visit. It's very calm and my mother and other residents appear happy and settled. The team as a whole are very supportive, and have a lot of
knowledge regarding residents' needs.

My father is very happy in this home. I'm so pleased to see the improvements with the dementia unit, it's calm, caring and clean. The staff can't do enough for you. The manager and deputy manager are always at hand for advice and supportive. The home is improving, it's decorated lovely with themed areas
and now they plan to improve the grounds.

I have been very impressed with the care mum has had since she went to Horkesley Manor.
All of the staff give excellent basic care but also that extra bit of friendly open and knowledgeable support that makes so much difference to mum and her family.

From show round to Mum being admitted to the home, it has been smooth and we've been supported. I can highly recommend GHM.

My mother has been a resident for just over a year and is very content and happy. She is well looked after by the staff. The home has come on leaps and bounds since the new manager has arrived. There are more activities and outings. The home is being decorated and looks very nice. It has a lovely homely
atmosphere and if someone is looking for a loving, caring home I can highly recommend Great Horkesley Manor.

I visited my father in December 2016. He resides on the Dementia wing of the facility. I found his accommodation to be nice and the staff extremely caring to his needs. I flew from America to see him and when I returned to America I felt at peace that my father was in good hands.

We are a large family and visit my brother every week, so most of the time he will get a visitor daily. The staff are very friendly but it seems that they do have a great amount of paperwork to carry out.
My only concern is the parking, which can be a problem, sometimes it means parking on the grass.
This could discourage visitors from coming.
I have raised this with the manager and was advised parking for staff will be moved to the rear of the property, but it has not happened to date.

My father needed secure residential care after a hospital stay and he came to Great Horkesley Manor. The atmosphere here has always been welcoming and the location overlooking fields is an asset. The recent changes in management and resultant improvements in all areas have only served to make me even
happier that we chose this as his home, my peace of mind is complete knowing he is in good hands.

When looking for a care home for mum, we were sent to some places of which one was heartbreaking at the thought of any old person ending their days in it.
I then looked at Horkesley Manor which was an uplifting moment and gave me hope that there were indeed good, respectable and caring places out there.

My ex-parents-in-law were admitted to the home in November 2016. Since then, my ex-mother-in-law has passed away, but the care and professionalism of the staff was fantastic as she slipped away. My ex-Father-in-law is still there and very well looked after. One great advantage to GHM is that they have
double rooms for husband and wife, which in my opinion helps process no end.

My father lived at Great Horkesley Manor for 7 years. During all that time he was cared for with respect and consideration. As he became frail the level of care gradually increased and nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff. He has recently passed away and the level of care and attention he received
during his final days could not be faulted. The staff were absolutely brilliant and I cannot speak highly enough of them. If you are considering a care home in Colchester, definitely give Great Horkesley Manor a visit.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.683)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.683) out of 10 for Horkesley Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.683 for Horkesley Manor is calculated as follows: ( (190 Excellents x 5) + (41 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 243 Ratings = 4.683
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Horkesley Manor is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 73 registered maximum number of service users is 14.6, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
