We are a large family and visit my brother every week, so most of the time he will get a visitor daily. The staff are very friendly but it seems that they do have a great amount of paperwork to carry out.
My only concern is the parking, which can be a problem, sometimes it means parking on the grass.
This could discourage visitors from coming.
I have raised this with the manager and was advised parking for staff will be moved to the rear of the property, but it has not happened to date.

My father needed secure residential care after a hospital stay and he came to Great Horkesley Manor. The atmosphere here has always been welcoming and the location overlooking fields is an asset. The recent changes in management and resultant improvements in all areas have only served to make me even
happier that we chose this as his home, my peace of mind is complete knowing he is in good hands.

Standards have improved significantly recently since the new manager. Overall, I am pleased with the improved level of care my mum now receives. Now spring has arrived, I look forward to seeing mum involved in new summer outdoor activities.

When looking for a care home for mum, we were sent to some places of which one was heartbreaking at the thought of any old person ending their days in it.
I then looked at Horkesley Manor which was an uplifting moment and gave me hope that there were indeed good, respectable and caring places out there.

My experience of the above care home has been very positive. My father is very happy there and well looked after. In fact, I would say the staff go the extra mile to be helpful and friendly.

My ex-parents-in-law were admitted to the home in November 2016. Since then, my ex-mother-in-law has passed away, but the care and professionalism of the staff was fantastic as she slipped away. My ex-Father-in-law is still there and very well looked after. One great advantage to GHM is that they have
double rooms for husband and wife, which in my opinion helps process no end.

The home has moved in the right direction a great deal since new management was appointed. Team appear more content and settled. Residents, especially my father receive a good standard of care and enjoy the environment. I look forward to the future changes and have great confidence in the whole team.

My father lived at Great Horkesley Manor for 7 years. During all that time he was cared for with respect and consideration. As he became frail the level of care gradually increased and nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff. He has recently passed away and the level of care and attention he received
during his final days could not be faulted. The staff were absolutely brilliant and I cannot speak highly enough of them. If you are considering a care home in Colchester, definitely give Great Horkesley Manor a visit.

Based on our experience to date, the home is caring and supportive to both my father and our family. My mother has been a resident for the last 7 months. I chose the home above others available to her on the basis of it's location and surroundings. The wide corridors with many areas for residents and visitors to sit, all with window views of the garden, also access to the gardens are available from
numerous points. It has a very family based atmosphere which is encouraged by management, carers and all the supporting staff.
The home is clean and fresh but would benefit from refurbishing. The carers and activity staff are professional but have a warmth and kindness necessary to make it feel homely. There have been a few problems regarding my mothers safety due to her lack of mobility and lack of staffing which is currently being addressed. Any issues raised are dealt with immediately and with and open access.

My friend has been in H.M for 5 years now and through that time has seen quite a few changes.
Her recent accident and increased dementia, has meant that extra care has had to be given to her as she has been incapacitated with a broken hip.
To see the way the staff have cared for her has been lovely.
They offer a warm, friendly service dealing with situations with both humor and dignity. It's a job I could never do, but I am so grateful that there are people out there that can, and they deserve a huge accolade for doing so. I wish that I had taken note of some of these girls names, because they truly deserve some praise.
My primary point of contact at H.M has her finger on the ball and is always ready to answer any questions you may have. She has a no-nonsense approach and will tell you how it is - I like that and believe it's what is needed in an environment like this.
In short, I could not recommend Horkesley Manor highly enough. The interiors have been given a huge over-haul, with bright colour paintings and themed areas for the Dementia care unit, and light, bright walls elsewhere in the home. The carpets, fittings and fixtures are all clean, and the gardens are well maintained.
The surroundings offer lots of opportunities for the residents to be outside in the warmer months, with gazebos and shelters on offer.
Although I've never attended these events, regular picnics and fairs are held, and families are encouraged to become involved with H.M.
Security is of utmost importance, and as such, visitors have to wait to be let in and let out of the home.
For anyone considering a care home, I would make this top of the list when organising visits.

Meet Judith - Home Manager at Horkesley Manor Care Home


Judith started her career in the healthcare sector over 26 years ago gaining valuable skills and knowledge working in a variety of care settings. She has managed both residential and nursing homes in Essex and Suffolk and is passionate about her role as a home manager. Judith has supported homes through transitions and rebuilds, she also worked as a support manager, mentoring new managers in their roles, and improving compliance to achieve good ratings across the CQC 5 standards.


Judith completed her Level 4 in social care and her RMA- registered manager’s award in 2011 with City and Guilds and was awarded the Star Certificate.
