My mum moved into Basingfield Court in March 2020 just before the first lockdown. It was a very difficult time for everyone but the staff did their best to help Mum settle in and make new friends. The manager was very aware as Christmas approached what a terribly difficult year this had been for all the residents and she put together a programme of Christmas activities and entertainment to help everyone celebrate Christmas in style. There were Christmas crafts, games and presents. Every single member of the team went all out to ensure that every resident had a Christmas to remember. On Christmas day when the team must have been missing their own families the staff were in fancy dress and going the extra mile to make Christmas as happy as it could be for the residents. My mum had a lovely day and I took comfort from knowing that while she could not be with me this year she was being looked after and well cared for. The manager and her team really do put the care into care home.

During the lockdown, the staff have been great at keeping the residents safe and happy. We have been kept up to date with what has been going on with our mum, being able to speak to her via facetime and more recently face to face. By booking a time slot is great.

Overall, Basingfield provides good levels of care from a hard-working, dedicated and compassionate team.

However, a recent marked decline in the quality, frequency and delivery of activities available for residents is a definite cause for concern.

This is currently below the standard expected and previously provided and is in need of immediate and radical improvement.

Review from D H (Cousin of Resident) published on 21 January 2020 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My cousin moved into Basingfields in February 2016 when she relocated from West Yorkshire. She had become very isolated in her last few years in Yorkshire and after several falls she spent week sin hospital. Moving her to Basingstoke was undoubtedly the right thing to do and the team at Basingfields made her so welcome that she settled into life at Basingfields very quickly. The time she spent at Basignfields before she passed away on 4th January 2020 was probably the most enjoyable period of her last decide. The secret of the Basingfields success is the way that the team care for residents, treat them with respect and take a genuine interest in them as individuals.

Review from Pamela L (Sister of Resident) published on 16 January 2020 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

Although the facility is nice to look at, and most of the staff are kind and caring, Basingfield still leaves some things to be desired for those residents who are still mentally fit and alert. Since the sudden departure of the activities co-ordinator, there have been precious few activities that continue to appeal, eg. there have been promises of trips out by minibus but none arranged, and those few trips that have been offered have all carried a supplementary cost, which residents on fully funded placements cannot afford to take up. The facility has also faced challenges in getting a decent catering service. Chefs come and go and the quality of food is often poor. The mainstays appear to be sausages (in all forms), and mince, (lamb and beef). As food is the highlight of many people's day, is quality too much to expect?

In general, we are very pleased with the service that my father receives from the home, and the staff are always very helpful and friendly. The home has experienced some major senior staff changes over the last year that has been very concerning.

The facilities are in generally good order but could, in some areas, do with some updating. A large amount of time and money was spent this year on making the reception area look more modern to visitors, but this, unfortunately, does not benefit the residents.

I had to take my aunt out of this care home at very short notice and move her to another because of the level of care she was receiving. I have made a complaint through Sanctuary Care's official procedures but one month on have received no reply.

Review from Karen B (Daughter of Resident) published on 19 March 2019 Submitted via Website

Management and carers employed by the home are excellent. However, there are very often agency staff working who are not familiar with the residents individual care needs. The residents also are not familiar with the agency staff, and would probably feel more comfortable with a familiar face.

Reply from Fae Doherty, Marketing Officer at Basingfield Court Residential Care Home

Dear Karen, thank you for your kind words about our team. After speaking with the home manager, she has let me know that whilst the home are currently making use of agency staff, the same team are often employed in the home to increase the continuity of care. If you ever have any queries, please do speak to the managers. Best wishes, Fae

My father has been in the home for a year and on the whole, he/we are happy. However, there has been incidences where requests have been made for extra bedding/carpet cleaning/diabetic checks etc to carers and not followed through. Additionally, for the size of the home, a single activities coordinator is insufficient for the number of residents and a vehicle to facilitate outings is required. All staff are friendly, caring and helpful but the organisation needs to be better.

Mum is 93 and has dementia. In May we had the uncomfortable decision to make finding a care home for mum. The decision was very easy for us. The moment we were invited for an interview and shown around we were instantly impressed with the facilities, cleanliness and the staff. Mum went into Basingfield Court in April and we saw an immediate improvement in her appetite and cleanliness. She joins in with most activities and even trips out. We all have the peace of mind she is being well looked after.

I joined the team at Basingfield Court as a deputy manager last year, before becoming manager earlier this year. As a team we deliver great care for our residents, working closely with professionals and supporting residents’ families and loved ones.

My career in care started over 10 years ago, working as a carer alongside studying. I have recently completed my level 5 Management in Health and Social Care and will continue to study and learn in my role.

Caring for people is very important to me. I enjoy doing things that will either help someone or change someone’s life, even in a small way. Here at Basingfield Court, our wonderful team supports in enriching residents' lives every day. It makes me feel that I am a part of something very special.
