My lovely mum has been living at Heatherside since 2021. While Mum's support needs have increased significantly due to her dementia, one thing has always remained consistent: she feels like she's "just on holiday" and always has lovely things to say about the staff.
The rear gardens are beautiful and
lovely to sit in during the warmer months.
The most important thing for our family is knowing that Mum always feels safe and cared for. Whenever we visit, there is always some activity going on in the lounge, and this even reaches residents in their bedrooms, helping everyone feel included. There are regular external visitors who come in to entertain-singing, pet therapy, and so much more. The list really does go on, and it's fabulous. Mum even got to watch Elvis films last week on a huge tablet from the comfort of her bed!
What truly makes Heatherside work so well is the family of staff. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who cares for my mum-whatever role you play.

Heatherside has always consistently updated all policy standards. My mother has been in residence since 2005 and has experienced all changes since then. Heatherside has remained an excellent care home.

My mother was very concerned when the time came for her to move into a care home. Nicky and her team have proved themselves to be very compassionate when caring for my mother especially when her anxiety is making her feel unwell. It is not an easy job working at a care home but the staff at Heatherside
from the top down do a magnificent job and my mother is truly fortunate to reside at this home.

I accompanied the Activity leaders and Carers with 6 of the residents to the Garden Centre this week. We went for a spot of shopping followed by tea and cakes in the cafe. The residents loved it, they clearly all appreciated getting out and a change of scenery. It was no mean feat managing various logistics
in the centre, and the wheelchairs in and out of the bus but the driver was also fab. The staff really go over and above to improve the quality of life for the residents and it was such a joy to see the beaming faces.

I cannot praise all of the staff at Heatherside enough for the care and attention that they have shown my mum since she moved in earlier this month. My mum made a big move of not only going into care, but also moving areas - all with having extremely limited speech. The staff have all already learnt
how to effectively communicate with mum and I couldn't have asked for a smoother settling in than we have had. Every time I ask her if she's happy, the smile and "ooo yes" tells me everything I need to know. My mum looks lighter and brighter in such a short space of time and knowing how well she's being cared for has truly given me such a sense of relief.

Sadly our mother passed away on the 2nd January, she was so well looked after by the staff, they are very caring and attentive. I would rather not pick anyone out, they were all fabulous. I can recommend this home without reservation. Our mother was there for three years, she was very happy and settled,
despite her dementia. Although she was very passive there was a lot of work for them to do. One point worth mentioning, is the substantial renovation and upgrades which have made the home even more comfortable.

There is a calm, friendly atmosphere when one enters this home. The residents are encouraged to sit in the lounge during the day where there is always something going on. The activities provided are brilliant. The personal cleanliness of the residents is very good. The laundry situation could do with
attention, e.g system for sorting clothes, (missing items). There is a lovely garden to walk round or sit.

I first wrote a review when Mum had been at Heatherside for 9 months. She has now been there for nearly 2 years. There is a lady of 108 years of age so they obviously look after the residents well! What particularly impresses me are the wide range of stimulating activities provided by a dedicated, enthusiastic
team of activity coordinators and the lovely extensive grounds full of flowers and shrubs. Lots of wildlife (eg pheasants, ducks, deer, squirrels and many birds) visit to provide added interest. Many of the staff have worked at Heatherside for many years. They are very caring and know all the residents by name. Although it is an old building it is constantly being renovated to keep it fresh. Only problem is that parking can sometimes be difficult if lots of visitors at the same time as delivery vans.

Since coming to live at the home earlier this year after spending a spell in hospital Nan is like a different person. She has gone from struggling with her dementia, not wanting to eat, drink or participate in anything to doing a 180°. She settled in and made friends quickly. Her appetite returned and
she was always telling us how lovely the meals are. She was encouraged to take part in the activities and now happily joins in willingly. Her sense of humour has returned and it feels like we have our nan back. The staff at the home are fabulous and you just know they really care. We have just attended the family fete day and it was fantastic. The garden was decorated with flags, there were stalls, food, drink and even a singer! Nan had a lovely afternoon with her friends and family. Would 100% recommend this care home.

My mother moved into Heatherside in October 23 after spending the last few years in sheltered accommodation in Basingstoke. From the very beginning, we were so impressed with the atmosphere and philosophy of the home. They did so much for their guests, to help with both their physical well-being and
also to stimulate them mentally. The main lounge area was bright and airy, and Mum's room was cosy and had everything she needed. The staff were so attentive, and communication from the home was excellent, particularly as Mum's health began to decline this year. Both the managers there definitely go the extra mile in looking after both the family of their residents and the residents themself. Nothing is too much trouble. Unfortunately, Mum passed away in mid-February, and my only regret was that she had such a short time at Heatherside. It was a very happy place for her.

Heatherside has been my mother’s home for over 5 years. It has always been, and still is, like one big family. The staff and residents are wonderful. A lovely lounge looking out onto the gardens and activities for residents to join in with, if they wish. The grounds are stunning with a lovely area to
sit out when it’s warmer. You couldn’t wish for a lovelier home.

Mum has been a resident at Heatherside for two and a half years and is very content. All the staff are lovely and look after her very well.
By choice, she spends almost all her time in her comfortable room. However, the home has a bright, spacious lounge and cosy dining room that many of the residents
use daily.
All her care needs are met (although I do top up her fruit but I suspect that's because she doesn't think to ask for more).
It took a little while to learn the 'system' at the home. For example, Mum didn't know for some time that she could ask for a larger meal. Perhaps a 'welcome' leaflet with this sort of information would be useful.

Fairly satisfied with the service. Staff do their best to provide a happy comfortable experience, they are all concerned with the well-being of the residents. Mum is so much happier and less anxious since she moved to Heatherside. The staff and carers are a wonderful bunch of people who genuinely care about the residents and do their best. When Mum was ill recently the carers went above and beyond to really look after her and help her recover. There is a
friendly and sociable atmosphere at Heatherside, most of the residents can usually be found in the light and airy open-plan lounge area where they can get involved in organised activities, listen to music or often just chat together.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.704)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.704) out of 10 for Heatherside Rest Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.854 for Heatherside Rest Home is calculated as follows: ( (143 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 164 Ratings = 4.854
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Heatherside Rest Home is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Nicola Parsons

Job Title: Care Manager Joined: 1995

Who are you?

My name is Nicola, although I am known as Nicky. I am the Registered Care Manager here at Heatherside. I have worked in health and social care since 1995, when I joined Heatherside as a care assistant. At that time, the home was actually owned by my parents! This aided my opportunity to enter a profession I truly love

Thats unbelievable that your parents owned the home. I assume they didn't appoint you as manager on your first day!?

Ha! No, over the years, I have worked my way up through a range of roles, gaining extensive hands-on experience and a strong understanding of residential care. I became a Registered Care Manager in 2020. Having spent almost my entire career at Heatherside, I have a deep connection to the home and a strong sense of responsibility in maintaining its values, standards and family ethos.

Wow, the fact that you’ve spent almost your whole working life here, you must feel a real connection to both the home and its residents?

Yes! I studied Health and Social Care at college, and from the outset, I knew this was the career for me. What continues to drive me is the ability to make a real difference to people’s lives, even if that difference is supporting them to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

This role does not come without its challenges, but these are what I thrive on. I am passionate about providing high-quality, person-centred care and ensuring that every resident feels respected, listened to and valued as an individual.

What do you think are the most important aspects of managing both a care home and the staff?

It is extremely important to me that residents living at Heatherside are offered genuine choice and control over their lives. Every resident is supported to make their own decisions, even if those decisions may appear unwise to others. I firmly believe that people should be able to continue living the life they had before coming into care, with dignity, independence and self-respect.

Staff development is also a key priority for me. I am committed to upskilling my team, offering opportunities for learning, training and encouraging their career progression. I am known for mentoring and supporting staff to reach their potential, and I actively encourage progression and promotion within the workplace.

A motivated, well-supported team creates a positive atmosphere and ensures the highest standard of care for residents.

I’d definitely work for you! With you being here so long, how do you keep the home feeling varied and exciting after all these years?

We regularly review our activities programme to ensure we are meeting everyone’s social needs. Activities are meaningful, varied and residents are encouraged to remain active and engaged both within the home and in the wider community.

What about away from Heatherside, what is your life like when you clock off?

Outside of work, I’m a married mum with 3 children, so family life is very important to me. These values naturally influence the way I work and the environment I strive to create at Heatherside.

In my spare time, I enjoy going to the cinema and long walks with my dog, which help me unwind. I also have a guilty pleasure for colouring, which I find very therapeutic after a busy day at work. Taking time to reset allows me to remain calm, focused and present in my role as the home manager.

Cinema and dog walking. I may start coming with you! I’m sure you’ve been in and seen a lot of homes in your role. What do you think makes Heatherside so special?

Heatherside is a residential care home with a strong home-from-home ethos. We focus on warmth, familiarity and genuine relationships rather than unnecessary extras. One of the things that makes Heatherside unique is our resident involved vegetable garden, where we grow our own produce. Residents are encouraged to take part as much or as little as they wish.

Aside from anything else, this helps them stay active, enjoy the outdoors and maintain a sense of purpose and routine.

We also place great importance on community engagement. Over the past year, residents have enjoyed trips to Milestones Museum, local garden centres and a recent outing around Basingstoke to view the Christmas lights. These experiences help residents remain connected to the world around them and continue enjoying life outside the care home.

That all sounds great and very engaging. What else is important that you offer at Heatherside?

We are always striving to offer a genuine, homely experience. Whilst we do not have a cinema, bar or internet café, what we do have is something far more important: dedicated staff who are caring, compassionate and extremely passionate about what they do, day in, day out.

Our focus is not on gimmicks, but on creating a warm, safe and supportive environment where residents feel comfortable and valued. The strong relationships between residents and staff are at the heart of daily life at Heatherside. We ensure care is personal, consistent and always, always, delivered with kindness.

Finally, why would you choose Heatherside for yourself or your relatives?

I would choose Heatherside because residents are supported to live meaningful, fulfilling lives, with choice, independence and their dignity at the centre of everything we do. Families can be reassured that their loved ones are cared for by a consistent, well-trained team who genuinely know and care about each individual that comes through our doors.

Heatherside is not just a place to live — it is a place where people are supported to continue being themselves.
