Right from our first visit, we knew this was the right care home for our mum and gran. The atmosphere is that of a home, rather than the more institutionalised feel we had at many others that we looked around. After a traumatic time recently, we were amazed to find that Mum had settled within a week.
All the staff and management are caring and patient. They know and treat each resident with kindness, respect and personalised care. After two weeks, Mum told us, 'for the first time in ages, I feel I don't have a care to worry about'. We couldn't be happier.
Reply from Carol Clinch, Care Manager at Heatherside Rest HomeThank you so much for your lovely comments. We are so pleased Mum has settled so quickly, it is a pleasure to have her here with us.

We cannot express enough our gratitude and thanks to the management and all the caring staff at Heatherside Care Home for the wonderful way they care for Mum on a daily basis. The overall standard of care and support given to all residents is the highest. It is obvious that residents are happy because
of the individual attention they receive - and this includes our mum. We have peace of mind knowing how well she is cared for.

We, as a family would like to give a huge thanks to the staff of Heatherside for the quality of care given to our mum over the last 18 months. Nothing was ever too much trouble and all the staff knew her and our immediate family well. We certainly felt we were visiting mum in her own home, which was
made easier by Heatherside having an "open door policy", so we could visit whenever we wanted. A tray of tea and biscuits was always welcomed by our elderly relatives when they had travelled far to visit mum.
Mum in her later months was certainly a fussy eater and drinker and they always tried to encourage her and offered the foods that she may like. The care that was given to mum especially in the last week of her life was outstanding. We were also cared for by the staff and virtually lived at Heatherside for her last few days. Thank you.

I have visited several other Care Homes and Nursing Homes; in my view, nowhere else compares to Heatherside. Heatherside is homely and one big family: all the staff know every resident well; they are all so kind and caring - a settled team, most have worked there for years.
The main lounge is very
spacious and bright, it opens out on to a large terrace and huge garden. The 2nd lounge is also nice: a quiet alternative with wi-fi.
All the food (Sunday roasts, home-made cakes, etc) are excellent. The rooms have wallpaper, are well-furnished; my father’s room had a wonderful view.
Thank you Heatherside for looking after my father so well - and for many happy memories: the warm welcome on his first day, the Firework Party, Christmas events, the friendly residents, the cats, the visiting pheasants - and much, more!!

Mum's been a resident for a month now after being transferred from hospital. Everyone has been most welcoming and nothing is too much trouble.

Although being refurbished, everywhere is kept clean and tidy. Visitors are made very welcome with plentiful tea/coffee and biscuits required.

A real credit

to the care home providers and not the horror stories you so often hear about. Well done everyone.

Generally very satisfactory apart from the absence of organised regular activities/stimulation for the residents.
Reply from Kerry, Care Manager at Heatherside Rest HomeHi Alan, thank you for your kind words, we adored your sister in law. I'm sorry you felt the activities were lacking, we are currently working hard to put in place a structured activities plan. We do hope you'll pop in and see us all.

Right from the very first time of entering Heatherside last year to view accommodation for my very close friend, the staff were very friendly and warm.
She has settled in really well much to the kindness and understanding of all the staff.
I have to travel about 70miles to visit so only get to see
her every other week, but I do not have to worry as she is well cared for.
On my last visit my sister in law and I were going to eat our lunch in the car while our friend had hers, straight away we were offered an area where we could all eat together, how lovely and thoughtful.
A big thank you to all the staff.

My mum moved to Heatherside in October 2015. It's a lovely setting with a large garden area, in the countryside. The communal lounge has been refurbished and is clean and bright. Since mum has arrived, her small but adequate room has been decorated and new bathroom 'furniture' added.
She has had the
opportunity to choose her colour scheme and add her own pictures etc. She enjoys the food and has gained weight. Staff are kind, patient and welcoming. Mum enjoys the bingo and events that are arranged. Heatherside is a lovely place.

My sister-in-law was a resident at Heatherside Care Home for eight years and during that time she was always treated with kindness and respect. During her last weeks the staff were so kind and caring and I could not have asked for better care and respect. I feel that Heatherside have a very dedicated
team of carers.

We have been very pleased with the welcome received when mum moved to her new home at Heatherside 4 months ago. She has settled in well and is happy in her new routine. The staff are all very supportive and kind, although we would welcome more feedback from them as mum does get a little muddled up at
times, so it would be nice to know exactly what's going on sometimes! The food always looks appealing, good choice of menu. The new garden room is superb, offering a feeling of hotel spacious to the lounge area. Would definitely recommend!

My mum was admitted to Heatherside Care Home in April 2015. From viewing the home to present day the staff here are wonderful. They have been experiencing some trying times whilst working around a huge expansion to the home. During this time the carers, admin staff have always put the residents needs
first and foremost. The lady in admin is always available to answer any questions and is extremely polite and helpful. The staff are amazing with the residents and nothing is too much trouble for them.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.704)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.704) out of 10 for Heatherside Rest Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.854 for Heatherside Rest Home is calculated as follows: ( (143 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 164 Ratings = 4.854
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Heatherside Rest Home is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Nicola

Nicola Parsons

Job Title: Care Manager Joined: 1995

Who are you?

My name is Nicola, although I am known as Nicky. I am the Registered Care Manager here at Heatherside. I have worked in health and social care since 1995, when I joined Heatherside as a care assistant. At that time, the home was actually owned by my parents! This aided my opportunity to enter a profession I truly love

Thats unbelievable that your parents owned the home. I assume they didn't appoint you as manager on your first day!?

Ha! No, over the years, I have worked my way up through a range of roles, gaining extensive hands-on experience and a strong understanding of residential care. I became a Registered Care Manager in 2020. Having spent almost my entire career at Heatherside, I have a deep connection to the home and a strong sense of responsibility in maintaining its values, standards and family ethos.

Wow, the fact that you’ve spent almost your whole working life here, you must feel a real connection to both the home and its residents?

Yes! I studied Health and Social Care at college, and from the outset, I knew this was the career for me. What continues to drive me is the ability to make a real difference to people’s lives, even if that difference is supporting them to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

This role does not come without its challenges, but these are what I thrive on. I am passionate about providing high-quality, person-centred care and ensuring that every resident feels respected, listened to and valued as an individual.

What do you think are the most important aspects of managing both a care home and the staff?

It is extremely important to me that residents living at Heatherside are offered genuine choice and control over their lives. Every resident is supported to make their own decisions, even if those decisions may appear unwise to others. I firmly believe that people should be able to continue living the life they had before coming into care, with dignity, independence and self-respect.

Staff development is also a key priority for me. I am committed to upskilling my team, offering opportunities for learning, training and encouraging their career progression. I am known for mentoring and supporting staff to reach their potential, and I actively encourage progression and promotion within the workplace.

A motivated, well-supported team creates a positive atmosphere and ensures the highest standard of care for residents.

I’d definitely work for you! With you being here so long, how do you keep the home feeling varied and exciting after all these years?

We regularly review our activities programme to ensure we are meeting everyone’s social needs. Activities are meaningful, varied and residents are encouraged to remain active and engaged both within the home and in the wider community.

What about away from Heatherside, what is your life like when you clock off?

Outside of work, I’m a married mum with 3 children, so family life is very important to me. These values naturally influence the way I work and the environment I strive to create at Heatherside.

In my spare time, I enjoy going to the cinema and long walks with my dog, which help me unwind. I also have a guilty pleasure for colouring, which I find very therapeutic after a busy day at work. Taking time to reset allows me to remain calm, focused and present in my role as the home manager.

Cinema and dog walking. I may start coming with you! I’m sure you’ve been in and seen a lot of homes in your role. What do you think makes Heatherside so special?

Heatherside is a residential care home with a strong home-from-home ethos. We focus on warmth, familiarity and genuine relationships rather than unnecessary extras. One of the things that makes Heatherside unique is our resident involved vegetable garden, where we grow our own produce. Residents are encouraged to take part as much or as little as they wish.

Aside from anything else, this helps them stay active, enjoy the outdoors and maintain a sense of purpose and routine.

We also place great importance on community engagement. Over the past year, residents have enjoyed trips to Milestones Museum, local garden centres and a recent outing around Basingstoke to view the Christmas lights. These experiences help residents remain connected to the world around them and continue enjoying life outside the care home.

That all sounds great and very engaging. What else is important that you offer at Heatherside?

We are always striving to offer a genuine, homely experience. Whilst we do not have a cinema, bar or internet café, what we do have is something far more important: dedicated staff who are caring, compassionate and extremely passionate about what they do, day in, day out.

Our focus is not on gimmicks, but on creating a warm, safe and supportive environment where residents feel comfortable and valued. The strong relationships between residents and staff are at the heart of daily life at Heatherside. We ensure care is personal, consistent and always, always, delivered with kindness.

Finally, why would you choose Heatherside for yourself or your relatives?

I would choose Heatherside because residents are supported to live meaningful, fulfilling lives, with choice, independence and their dignity at the centre of everything we do. Families can be reassured that their loved ones are cared for by a consistent, well-trained team who genuinely know and care about each individual that comes through our doors.

Heatherside is not just a place to live — it is a place where people are supported to continue being themselves.
