I visited my aunt today and found the experience excellent. Although I was only there for a short while as my aunt was in bed, the staff were so friendly. My aunt could not speak highly enough of them and their care. I look forward to my next visit.

Mum became a resident of Oaklands on 21/12/23. It was a trying time for all the family, but with the kindness and caring, the staff at Oaklands gave, it has made things a lot easier for us.

The environment in Oaklands is always warm and welcoming. All the staff do their utmost to make sure my mother is happy and cared for. I couldn't be with her at Christmas, but felt happy knowing that she was being cared for and celebrating the festivities as we were. Oaklands provides an excellent service, and I am very grateful for this. Thank you.

General:
Interaction with staff - excellent, family always receives a warm welcome and kept informed of Mum's needs, health concerns, falls etc.
Food - excellent.
Activities - good.
Parking - satisfactory.
General ambience - friendly, warm and welcoming.
Mislaid clothing/labelling of clothing - of concern; being addressed.
Exterior: A little depressing; side entrance needs updating; doorway would benefit from a porch, smoking area's seats are uncomfortable and heavy to move around; planters need regular attention with dead/dying plants removed and replaced.
Grounds: Bland; residents may benefit from more interesting outlooks (ornamental trees, shrubs). Entrance needs better upkeep with more attractive planting. The planted boxes under the pergola are overgrown and neglected. Residents' rooms should not look out on any untended/unplanted areas, rubbish piles/broken ladders etc.
Interior: Public spaces - worn and need updating (apparently underway).
Curtains - rail fixings (all curtain hooks etc) need to be in place and tie-backs need to be utilised for neatness, in public rooms and residents' rooms (small details, negative impact at present).
Excursions - much appreciated; limited (but expensive).
Quiet/private areas - difficult to find for family visits (apart from resident's own room).
Two front rooms - crowded; difficult to manoeuvre walking frames etc.

Overall: A generally comfortable rest home in need of more TLC.

Mum came in to you in unlikely and difficult circumstances. We knew it was temporary as she wasn't stabilising but was unsafe at home. In any event, she wasn't with you long before she ended up in the hospital eventually getting a diagnosis. However, in the short time she was with you, we couldn't fault your care and attention for her and also us as we navigated ourselves through a very different time. Oaklands Rest Home is a place of kindness and warmth. Something so important to families and residents. My only comment would be the bathroom in her room was not really fit for purpose.

Reply from Nicola Ray, Registered Home Manager at Oaklands Rest Home
Many thanks for your review, we are so grateful for all your kind words and it's so nice to know that you felt supported by the team, as this is also very important to us.

With regards to the bathroom, if you feel you are able, please can you speak to me or the team so we can hear your concerns and look into rectifying this. Many thanks.

Whenever we visited the staff were pleasant, helpful and clean.
Mum was always clean. She is bed bound now and there was always a drink left in reach for her.

Face to face or on the phone staff always has time to listen and respond to any concerns. I feel that we are kept fully informed of Mum.

My mother moved in about a month ago. I cannot praise Oaklands Rest Home high enough for the love and support they have given, not only to my mum but to the family too. They have taken the time to find out all Mum's likes and dislikes. They have made her beautiful room look like a home from home... special thanks to the maintenance men; they even put a photo collage together for her on one of her walls. The whole team go above and beyond in everything they do. Thanks to all staff and management. What a wonderful team.

Overall Experience

My dad was warmly welcomed to Oaklands Rest Home earlier this year. He has a bright, newly decorated room, and although at times, he is still reluctant to be in full time care and misses his independence, he is generally settling in well and is very well cared for. He is not one to join in with many activities, often preferring his own company in his room with his television, but he did enjoy himself when there was a “Men’s Club afternoon”, especially for the gentlemen residents. He also enjoyed having his hair cut by the mobile barber, who visited Oaklands in his fully equipped van. The Platinum Jubilee party was a lovely occasion, and he even got up and danced a little; he really enjoyed the music and listening to the singers. I feel he is well cared for in a warm, friendly safe environment, his personal appearance is important to him and he always looks clean and smart.

This beautiful care home which has always gone way above the call of duty. They know how to make a beautiful home for their residents and all staff are like family. Going out of their way to meet the needs of both residents and their families. We have been treated with compassion, friendship and respect. Making decisions with the care home to make our resident's life so enjoyable. Every day is celebrated with each resident being involved. Nothing is too much for the cheery happy well presented staff. I have been involved with other care homes in the past but never seen this level of pure care. Our relative has never been this happy in many ways as he is now spending lots of time with his peers. In our home we have a much younger family, although he loved it, now he has the best of all worlds. I can not speak more highly of each member of staff I have come into contact with, from laundry staff to carers, managers and maintenance. They are all outstanding.

What a wonderful jubilee celebration, the sun shone and the grounds were beautifully decked out with jubilee flags and even the queen came. This was the first time we had spent in Mum's company for longer than an hour since she moved in in March this year. To see her smile and really enjoy herself was very special, all the carers were so attentive to her and she obviously loves the attention. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

My Nan was here for the last 9 months of her life.
She was well cared for throughout her time there by all staff and loved the different activities, food and people.
When Nan was poorly, off duty staff even popped in to visit her and my Mum and I felt so happy she was so well looked after.
The staff cared for us as well and always lent a sympathetic ear to us both which made a sad time more bearable.
Nan was treated with respect and dignity through her stay and other residents look happy there too.
The home is exceptionally clean, the staff from all levels care and should be used as a demonstration to all care homes on how they should be run.

Both Mum and I will never forget their kindness to Nan or us.

This dedication to the industry is what led him to become the Founder and CEO of iCare Services, which revolutionises the care sector through technology.

Samir is the former Chair and now Executive Board Member of Hampshire Care Association – a not-for-profit organisation, which ensures care in Hampshire is of the highest standard and quality. Samir continues to play a role locally and nationally advocating for care providers.

Initially, Mia came into care to look after her terminally ill father with her mother, but as she truly values how precious the later stages of life are, wanted to give something back to other families. Mia continues to be passionate and committed to the residents and their loved ones.

Mia has shown her dedication by completing her care certificate, followed by Levels 2, 3, and 4, and has nearly completed Level 5. Mia is also our medication champion.

Dave is at the heart of everything that happens at Oaklands and goes above and beyond to make events special for residents. From playing the ‘Last Post’ on Remembrance Day to creating a memorable Jubilee Street Party by putting up beautiful decorations to celebrate Oaklands’ first event where friends, family, neighbours and staff could come together again since the pandemic started.

He is well-loved by our residents and always takes their opinions into account when carrying out his work and spends time helping new residents settle in, to make sure Oaklands always feels like home.

In his spare time, Dave recently walked seven marathons in seven days, raising lots of money to support a mental health charity. It just goes to show what a caring person he is, inside and outside of work!
