My mother spent 2 weeks in Saxonwood for respite care. It gave me peace of mind whilst I was away on holiday knowing that she was in safe hands. She was cared for with love and consideration and respect for her person at all times.

She was allowed to maintain her independence whilst being encouraged to participate in activities and socialise with fellow residents and all her needs were provided. She had a very happy stay. All the staff were particularly helpful, caring and loving. She has no criticisms of anyone.

It is the staff that stand out at Saxonwood. Many of them greet me personally whenever I visit and all are always friendly and helpful.

There are many events for residents. In the summer, they have outings to local places and the children from the local school often come in to help keep minds active. There are weekly sherry mornings which are particularly popular with my mother. The rooms are simple but comfortable and bright and the grounds are very well kept. If you are active enough then Battle town is a short walk away.

Saxonwood Care Home provides quality care and understanding for our mum who has been here for the past 18 months. It gives us peace of mind to know that she is being well cared for in a safe and happy environment. There are numerous activities to keep the residents occupied during the day if they so wish to participate in them and they are encouraged to do so to be part of a Saxonwood family. I would recommend the care home to any relative who is looking for a caring home for their family member.

Mother has now been at Saxonwood for almost a year and in that time, although now 99 years of age, I believe she has been given an increased quality of life from that which she enjoyed when living in her own house. This is down to the high quality of care provided by the staff and their ability to engage residents in exploring new activities. I also see a wide varied menu provided on a daily basis. I am delighted that we chose Saxonwood and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone looking for a safe environment for their loved ones.

The care at Saxonwood is of the highest quality and it is a great comfort to know that my father is so well looked after and content. When visiting the home I am always impressed by the attitude of the staff whether domestic, catering or care, the kindness shown to both residents and visitors reflects the professionalism with which the home is run.

I have been here for 5 1/2 weeks respite care recovering from hospital major surgery.
Saxonwood was recommended to me by a friend and I would willingly do the same if asked.

My room, unfortunately, had a noisy problem (water pipe?) for my first week but was soon put right and I was then able to sleep. Staff, particularly those from overseas have been extremely kind and helpful. The room was well equipped and clean. Administering medications very helpful.

Dad has made amazing progress in Saxonwood after a long stay in hospital. He was in a very bad state when he arrived but has put on 9 kilos during the last three months with all the excellent food and care.

The staff are all extremely friendly, helpful and kind and we are very grateful that Dad is now comfortable in a safe and caring environment.

Thank you all.

I have found everything at Saxonwood to be first class. All staff are friendly, warm and professional, it feels like a lovely home.

My father's room has a sunny outlook onto the gardens and he has started to return to his old self. We are very pleased with his progress and enjoy visiting him here and the food is very good also.

My mother-in-law has been a resident at Saxonwood for 18 months and in that time has gained confidence and started to take an interest in herself again and now regularly has her hair done and has taken part in activities which we never thought she would. She has made a cushion, painted a picture and most importantly made friends. The staff are all very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. If we have any questions, emails are answered promptly and we cannot fault the home.

Having spent 2 weeks respite care in Saxonwood, I would highly recommend it. The room was bright, airy and kept in good order. However, the important feature was the kindness of the manager and staff, who made you feel part of the family. I could not have received better care.

We were cautious putting mother into a home, but the experience surpassed all expectations. The care was of the very highest standard and felt genuine. All staff were friendly and caring. Care was individual and tastes and needs were fully met in an unobtrusive manner.

From the managers down, everyone seemed concerned about their residents and making them happy. I have such good memories of mum's final years when she had fun, laughed and had no cares.

Roxi VargalutaJob Title:Care Home ManagerJoined: 2014

I started at Saxonwood as a Care Assistant in 2014, and a year later, with the support of my team and manager, I became a Senior Care Assistant. I was in this role for five years. I've been able to upskill myself, and with support and training from Sussex Housing & Care, I've progressed to being the Deputy Manager, and since October 2025, I have been fortunate to be the Care Home Manager at Saxonwood.

I love working at Saxonwood, it's a brilliant home where we put residents at the heart of everything we do. We have lots of fun with residents and their families, and I enjoy making a difference to the daily life and well-being of our residents.

Sandra Everley
Sandra EverleyJob Title:Deputy Care Home ManagerJoined: 2022

I was attracted to working for Sussex Housing & Care because it felt homely, bright and friendly at Saxonwood. I find working with older people incredibly interesting, finding out all about their life stories and careers.

I have a background in administration, as previously I worked as an administrator at The Priory in Heathfield, and since joining Saxonwood as the care home administrator, I have also gained experience as a Care Assistant and have studied a City & Guilds Diploma in Business Administration. I work closely with Roxi to lead our team, and Saxonwood is like a big family. We have fun together, and it’s a brilliant place to work. I look forward to coming in!

Tracie Wilson
Tracie WilsonJob Title:Chef ManagerJoined: 2021

I qualified as a chef over 30 years ago and have worked in many different roles within catering, including as a bakery-trained confectioner, dietary needs chef, Head Chef, Head of Catering and Chef Manager. I am also qualified to teach food safety, nutrition, and dietary needs from the CIEH. I was also a home care worker for two years, and so I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to my role as Chef Manager at Saxonwood.

The job I do plays a major role at Saxonwood as food and hospitality are always a highlight of our residents' day. I have enjoyed taking part in activities, planning, preparing, and producing food and drinks for events, getting to know the residents, receiving good feedback and implementing new menus. I feel privileged to work with a great team both in and out of the kitchen, producing food that looks as good as it tastes and is enjoyed by all.
